Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

It's hilarious to remind everyone that the adaptation was not even made by Ufotable A-team (they were busy with fate, iirc).
That's even better, actually. If the adaptation was handled by ufotable's B-team, imagine if it was done by their A-team. That just speaks volumes of ufotable's staff quality.

God, I wish the MHA and TPN anime had not shit background art. It especially hurt the latter in terms of the adaptation, and while the former's was stylized a bit to fit with the comic book aesthetic, compare the TV series with the new Heroes: Rising movie coming out and the difference in quality is like, night and day.

Still, congrats to Kimetsu's major success. I'm predicting a million a month at minimum.
As much as I love the MHA anime, yeah, the background art style isn’t that great.

We won't see much more since most titles are hardly successful. It's safe to say SxF & Jigokuraku will get their animes. Both series are top sellers in Jump+ so I dont see why they wont.

I do & the biggest hit of the decade still goes to AoT.
Was talking about from Jump, but I should have been more clearer. Apologies.

I mean, was AoT's first season particularly remarkable in terms of animation quality?
Uh... yes. Yes, it was.
(Also, AoT was already big before the anime, unlike KnY)

AoT s1's animation was remarkably bad actually, it'd have 1 moment every 2-3 episodes that looked great but most of the time it was slideshows, some episodes had almost no movement whatsoever, just being slow pans of static pictures for 20 min.

Regarding Kimetsu it would have grown pretty well regardless of the studio I think, but it's undeniable that Ufotable's work on it (and ep 19 in particular) is the reason for the absolutely massive boost it got and is still getting.

Probs to them, I really loved their work in Akazusa arc and how they managed to keep the quality for 26 episodes straight.

Great anime adaptation doesn't guarantee a great manga boost. I think we've been through this before. Just take a look at Vinland Saga or Fire Force. Then you have awful adaptations like Go Toubun boosting the manga.
Uh... yes. Yes, it was.
(Also, AoT was already big before the anime, unlike KnY)
It wasn't. Like someone else said, it had good animation for 1 episode then the other bunch were just slide shows.

Don’t get me wrong. I think the manga itself is good, and I think a boost would have happened regardless, but the anime definitely took the boost to the caliber that it did. Especially all the hype and buzz around episode 19 of the anime.

Sure, sometimes you get cases like Tokyo Ghoul, where the anime isn’t that good, but a huge boost still happens. But cases very from anime to anime, and adaptation to adaptation. And how people are exposed to the anime.

I think it shouldn’t be underestimated how good of an adaptation Kimetsu was. MHA as a great adaptation for the most part, but Kimetsu’s adaptation blows it out out the park in terms of consistent sakuga animation like every episode, soundtrack, cinematography, atmosphere, and the series just has a plain cinematic look to it. It probably has one of, if not the, best Jump adaptations ever in terms of pure production quality. Idk if Black Clover would have exploded to the levels of Kimetsu(probably not), but if it had an adaptation at even half the quality of Kimetsu I’m sure it would have saw a way bigger boost than what we’re seeing now.
Tokyo ghoul really surprised me. Despite they butchered almost everything, the manga still received a huge boost (was it KnY tier?) I don't remember but since then I have noticed TG was always in top 10 in Oricon at the end of the year. It must have been that God tier opening song.

So it doesn't matter how bad or good the adaptation is, the thing is that it has to have something else to engage the audience and that's the story and characters.

Yeah, like I said, the animation quality was remarkable. For better or for worse. I've seen both hate and love for it 🤷

2013: 1,6m copies
2014 (year of the anime): 6,9m copies
2015: 7,2m copies (TG + TG:re)

I think KnY just somehow managed to reach a wider audience than what'd be usually expected from a shonen magazine. kinda like AoT did before it.

Stuff like MHA and Black Clover are the bread and butter of WSJ. They have that potential to get popular with people that normally enjoy shonen, but not a lot of reach beyond that.

If anything the real surprise is TPN didn't get bigger, since it has a more, let's call it 'mature' tone, just like the first two, and perhaps reminiscent of things like Death Note as well. You'd think the potential to become really mainstream would be there.

Honestly, I feel like rather than the whole show needing to be good, a series really just needs the one or two incredible scenes to go viral for it to get a great boost. Hinokami Kagura in Kimetsu no Yaiba was that moment, the OP and first titan scene was it for AoT, and I'm sure you can get some others when you look into it.

Something quick people can see on youtube or nico and show their friends or whatever that's grea without context, and that's enough to prompt people to go out a pick up the first volume. Then they keep reading from there.

Neverland kind-of had that with the flower scene in the first episode but it's not the same without all the build up, and Dr Stone doesn't really have one big moment like that.

Guys, it's okay to use off-topic examples to make an overall point as long as you're also staying on-topic with the majority of your post.

But I've noticed lately where you guys will get sidetracked and just start arguing off-topic points entirely. For example, this Attack on Titan animation debate.

You guys *really* need to stop doing that. I feel like most of you know you're doing it, but still decide to do it anyway for whatever reason.

I want you guys to really make a concentrated effort to think about whether or not your posts are off-topic from here on out. A lot of you have been here long enough to know better, and I shouldn't even need to point this stuff out.

Or more so that Kimetsu had a well planned out production schedule. They had the first few episodes done in advance.

The funny thing is that if they keep making more seasons, there will be more impacful moments than hinokami.

The anime / movie / recommendations are all just a way to reach more people. All of these are forms of advertisement. Ads would only work so much. What does get said people to stay are the story elements, characters and marketable appeal of the series which comes from the original source itself, the manga. Yeah, well adapted fights or episodes can increase the "hype" of something but the said "hype" would be irrelevant if the base material itself is not appealing to the audience. As great as the studio's adaptation is, it wouldn't have worked with a subpar manga that didn't appeal to most.

It's why something like TG and AOT did well despite either bad adaptation (TG) or poor animations for majority of episodes (AoT). Also keep in mind, TG's dark, depressing, survival setting came exactly during the time AOT got super popular and people were waiting for it's next season or for something gritty. Also, a reason why Terra Formars itself got so big as it did without an anime. Dark, gritty, depressing with a survival setting
Kingdom got it's major appeal from the radio show and other sources because it's poorly animated CGI snooze fest was not appealing to most people.

MHA's base material was great and / or resonated with the audience it was going for. Hence it's manga doing well even before the anime. But said appeal was limited which is the reason you aren't seeing more growth for it.
Personally, the quality of MHA dipped after 100 chapters and I don't expect to see any more growth for the manga which seems to ring true since the backlogs aren't really big anymore since the new season aired (unlike the previous 3 seasons) and the sales have been slowly declining since S3 ended.

Facts. Facts. Facts. Tell him. KNY was already popular but it only boosted this much because of how good the adaptation was and that's an indisputable fact. The story is very basic and you can't argue with that. (Not saying it's bad ffs) If it was animated but like JC staff or something, that wouldn't have looked as good and the boost wouldn't have been that big.

I mean, was AoT's first season particularly remarkable in terms of animation quality? And look at what that became.
That's different because the story is phenomenal. It got people hooked on the first episode and I still think AOT has the best first episode in history for anything ever.

Vinland saga adaptation isn't anything special. Also that doesn't have mass appeal so even if it did the sales still wouldn't boost that much

Okay, I know we're not supposed to post random guys, but this is too good.

This guy f**cking knew.
Lmao that last part had me laughing. Also this guy mentioned, just like me, how certain events in the wano arc can make the sales boost again. See!

Facts are something that have proofs. We dont know how big boost would be if adaptation wasn that good. So these arent facts but just some things some people want to believe because deep down inside they have always dreamed that some other mangas would be that popular.

Completely agree with your assessment.
Anime adaptations are , afterall, an exposure of the manga content to a wide audience, if the content is lackluster or dont hold major appeal, it wont see a "kimetsu" boost
