Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I think I talked about this with you in PM's but Toriko was always depicted as a "fun" series and their ambitions were very simple, it was explicitly stated very early in the manga. Which is why I find this "weak character writing" to be a pretty lousy criticism for a series like Toriko. Sure it could've been beneficially but it's not a necessity for the series to have it. I don't think Toriko readers expects some great character writing in a series where everyone is driven by appetite. People read Toriko for its world building aspect and the hype/manly art/creativity/fights are a big bonus. That's the selling point of Toriko and it hasn't changed for pretty much the entire run of the series so why would it likely fall off if the anime was to adapt it?

It's sorta the same with CSM; after reading the first few chapters, I didnt expect great character writing because the series already set its tone and I knew what to expect from it. It's a series that delivers a lot of hype/twists and aside from the MC being relateable (with some awesome SoL chapters), there's not a whole lot to brag about the series character writing yet its still adored by many for how hype/unpredictable it is.
You see, while I acknowledge that and know Shimabukuro's intention, I can't exactly say it's a justification myself. From reading Toriko, I found myself frustrated how Shimabukuro's attempts at cast building always fell flat due to the sheer scale of the setting preventing anyone from having meaningful interactions, and how Coco, Sunny and Zebra had very little in the way of character focus or development beyond "They get stronger". While you're entitled to not seeing this as a problem, I'd wager it was a factor that hindered the series after 2012 or so insofar as popularity.

The Chainsaw Man comparison is a contradiction. You say that the series character writing is average, then note that it has strong SoL chapters, a part of the story which needs character writing to function. Indeed, the most remembered of those chapters, the Denji/Makima movie date, is just two characters talking for 20 pages. Not about plot stuff, just general thoughts. That that chapter got so much discussion is objective proof that, in some way, the series has good character writing.

Lastly, Nakano himself has said that Jump's modern focus is "attractiveness of character", the idea that the main strength of modern manga hinges on its characters. You can see it with pretty much every modern Jump hit in the last ten years, and the vast majority of modern hit in the industry period. I struggle to see how Chainsaw Man is suddenly a massive exception to the rule, or that such a shift (likely built in part from the decline of magazines) wouldn't negatively effect Toriko.

Ehh, it's just like i said to you when you asked me about that review, no one cared about it at the time, no one read Toriko thinking about "muh complex or deep character", it was a great fun, with great and super charismatic characters, a incredible and creative world and powers, bloody fights (it was super violent at the time, sometimes even more than HxH), so you're just picking this manga, reading after is complete and putting way too much critical thoughts on it, like you did with series like Beelzebub and Sket Dance too, and forgetting to have fun with it.

Also, i don't know what you're talking with the "after 2012" when the manga only started to show real signs of declining in 2015 after the anime already ended.

Everyone, let's move the discussion away from Toriko.

Interesting. It seems that We Never Learn and Quintessential Quintuplets are likely to end right around the same time. Just thought that was funny considering the similar but different content and the comparisons always drawn between the two.

Kimetsu animation was beautiful with the implant of 3d which normally is jarring for the watchers but really.. I have to give it to Mob psycho, this hype culture can be stupidly negative. People suddenly forget every anime that came out this year, cuz this year is prob the best of the decade

It was because Kimetsu was the most searched anime of the year, per Yahoo's search engine (I think it's bigger than Google in Japan). Since it was, uh, very popular, no shit it was at the top.

KnY 18 #1 on Shosheki...the day before it came out.

This is rapidly becoming comedic.

I agree. Mob Psycho II deserved that award. While Kimetsu no Yaiba was visually-wise better, MB’s animation (frames) is totally on another level

At this point it's unsure if Samurai 8 will even get an anime, once TSS leaves next week it'll probably be ranking dead last every issue. It needs to survive long enough to get an anime first.

Like I imagine there were studios showing interest the moment it was announced but the sheer underwhelmingness of its performance probably turned some away.
well, I think once TSS leave, Yozakura and Mitama will be the last place holders (although I think Mitama might rise in ToC when the latest couple of chapters get ranked, there is also the chance it can take Stone Reboot place)

I don't think S8 will get axed, it worse they will move to Plus or V

and in regard to S8 anime potential, stuff with worse sales got adapted, so anything can happen

MHA anime had a rating of 4.8 this week, ranking within the top 5 and above OP's rating of 3.9. This is one of MHA's best ratings yet, with all but one S4 episodes having ratings equal or above 4.0. S4 is doing really well.
whenever I see ratings I can only think, they really f***ed up picking Dr Stone anime timeslot
are the kids it's supposed to educate watching it?? is anyone watching that thing??

I always hate seeing Black Clover circulation numbers because it always invites in the "oh wow, Black Clover is so dead, they really do celebrate every 100k copies, it'll be axed soon, new benchmark for cancellations in the ToC" kind of talk. And that's just kind of sad.

I ask, what makes you so certain Mitama is a success? Yozakura is the series with a CP.

The award is for animated show and not the quality of the animation itself.
