Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Speaking of stuff ending, Spotless Love on manga+/Jump+ feels like it probably doesn't have long left. I can see it ending in just 1 or 2 more chapters.

I wonder if they'll pick up a new thing to replace it, manga+ doesn't really seem to replace stuff they lose like Viz used to, rather it feels like their picks are a mix of what anything new they think western audiences would like and some randomness.

Jump+/MangaPlus's Curtain's Up, I'm Off has ended after 26 chapters and poor sales. Volume 3 will release on Feb 4.

This really sucks, it was such a great series. I hope the author makes a quick comeback, they have a great understanding of character writing and their art isn’t half-bad either.

Reading that Gaki Daisho series, the plot direction is so completely nonsense. Like it starts as some small town delinquent thing which is pretty normal yet now it's turned into a kid getting involved with the stock market, at the advice of a bunch of homeless people. Like what even is this as a story?

Really makes me wonder what other crazy 70s manga are we missing that lasted a few years and made an impact in Japan but nobody's heard of in the west.

I liked Agravity Boy, I thought it was pretty funny and I don't see what so offensive about it
dunno if the whole "change your gender thing" is a subplot a just a throwaway joke, but I don't care either way
I thought the jokes were executed well, and I liked the cast enough to follow their adventure even if they move away from that issue

and I liked Zipman second chapter, It started weak but finished strong
mainly because I think the dumb "rule of cool moment" fit the series very well
if only they can maintain this tone
I don't mind the twin relationship because that's something that I feel the author will explain with time, but I find the whole "keep the heroine smiling" act cringy

away from the new series
Yozakura is really getting to my nerves with the amount of new character they keep fucking introducing, enough already

why are they even fucking introduced??? what's the fucking difference between the psycho girl or the psycho toy store owner or the psycho older brother?
"kill taiyo hurr durrr"
"fucking love mutusmi hurr durr"

wow, so glad i read this week chapter, so different from last week chapter :-_-

Yozakura feels to me like a series that really should've been able to survive, but has refused to have any sort of meaningful progress or attempt any proper arcs or use its established cast and as a result is at the bottom. It has a good intro, setting, nice easy to parse art, and a potentially strong cast, but it keeps doing new things rather than building on anything and as such there's just no reason to get excited for the next chapter.

Like compare to the somewhat similar reborn, it also did lots of episodic comedy early on but even then it'd give little arcs to introduce new main cast, for example if the new guy this chapter was in Reborn he'd have gotten a 3-5 chapter semi-serious mini-arc then get added to the main cast. Instead this series quickly rushed a whole potential arc in one chapter.

Seriously, the only new character past ch 1 to get a proper arc introducing them is a minor villain who probably won't show up again. Meanwhile important-looking characters all show up, quickly get through their story as fast as possible, then it's onto the next. What is the writer (or editor) doing?I'm confident they could've made this premise work if story progress wasn't handled so terribly.

what's the last series to start off with actual arcs? (like an arc by chapter 10-12) Even Chainsaw man at the start was just one-offs or 2-3 chapter arcs too I think. It seems like a weird trend authors are scared to really do arcs until they're established although that just makes it harder to establish. If that was the case I would think getting the CP a few chapters ago should have been a sign it's established but as Mamo said, these recent two chapters introduced 2 new characters that are basically the same and already have the role filled.

It doesn’t necessarily need an arc. Just build and develop on what’s already there instead of constantly adding stuff

I know they just mentioned "attempt any proper arcs" and I realized barely anything does that anymore (in Jump at least, don't read enough non-episodic stuff from other magazines to compare them) until it's more established.

OP shot back up with ratings of 4.8 this week and MHA kept the ratings it got last week. It's so weird seeing MHA going head to head with OP in ratings, it used to only get ratings bigger than 4.0 on big episodes, specials, season premieres and finales.

Really wanna see how much Volume 25 sells now. The synergy is coming, what with a HeroAca cover page and bonus chapter, from the Volume Rising to promote the movie, to the anime entering the climax of its arc while the manga’s beginning a new one. Also Hawks was apparently trending on Twitter when his VA was announced. The franchise was gearing up for the movie release and now they’re beginning to fire on all cylinders, it seems. It has me excited.

To be honest, I don't have high expectations for volume 25's sales, if anything it might sell just as much as the previous volume. Yes, MHA has been pumping out content for a while now and this December is probably the busiest month the series has ever had, but a growth right now seems unlikely. If it happens, though, it would be really nice to see. Or maybe, the growth will be shown when volume 26 gets released. We have to wait and see.

That makes sense. The backlogs aren’t doing much, though they are there, and this has been its fourth season. Perhaps it might’ve hit its limit already, but again, we’ll see.

It has hit its limit. Prior to S4, volume sales were starting to decline. It'll be interesting to see if S4 contributed anything significantly aside from a few thousand copies in boost. It'll most likely just stagnate.

Not saying it hasn't, but sales were also declining prior to S3 and S2, and yet they ended up boosting it above the previous peak.

MHA has the weirdest sale pattern.

This is so accurate.

It really is frustrating how squandered the series is from a production standpoint. Not only is every chapter utterly directionless, it takes the biggest appeal of modern Jump, the appeal of characters, and absolutely ignores it by refusing by choosing to do anything with them.

Look at it from this perspective. Chapter 1 sets up the premise and demonstrates the cast, then Chapter 2 expands on it while giving Kyoichiro's role in the story. Then Chapter 3 and 4 suddenly end up about making protagonist Taiyo into an ultra-badass, the transformation of which happens literally in between chapters, only to then suddenly without any buildup go into a four chapter arc. Then it's random one-shot chapters for nearly an entire volume now.

On a whole, this kind of pacing is a mess, but the big issue is that the series has done nothing with the numerous characters its introduced. Take Shion, for example. The first chapter establishes her as a gamer girl, and then her spotlight chapter...establishes her as a gamer girl. We learn absolutely nothing new about her, and the chapter is instead just what ways the idea of a gamer girl can be stretched out for jokes. And when the series isn't taking the titular family and doing absolutely nothing new with them, its introducing random new characters with zero set-up, even though the current cast is barely in any way established.

Contrast this with Mitama. I felt the series was exceptionally boring when it seemed like it was just stretching out its thin premise, but the series genuinely improved as it built upon its foundation regarding its characters with the introductions of the likes of Soya (which made Joh much more rounded) and the Spirits (fleshing out a bunch of one-off gags into actual characters). While I obviously can't confirm if it'll actually survive, I can at least say that it feels like the series has a much clearer idea of what it wants to be - a light comedy built on wacky antics and the emotional connections between its cast.

Yozakura isn't like that. All it is trying to use a variety of gimmicks without actually making characters out of them, and it's a chore to read as a result.

What you pointed out isnt the reason why Yozakura is in the bottom, Mitama Secureity is also in the bottom, the main reason why this is happening is the current moment in the rankings, there's no new series despite Yozakura, Mitama and Samurai 8, the popular mangas are so well established in the magazine that you will rarely see editors putting any of them in the bottom or at least under these 3 mangas, even Yuuna is doing solid in the rankings, unless these two mangas were instantly hits from the beginning, this was the inevitable fate after Kamio Yui, Taisei, BC and TSS were canceled.

Until the new stuff start to get ranked or the first volumes get released, these positions at the bottom doesn't really reflect the whole picture.

I agree with this. But I don't buy "popular manga are so well established in the magazine that you will rarely see editors putting any of them at the bottom". Thing is that Shueisha wants newbies that make them do the opposite, put some veterans below them. That is how you get a newbie with potential. Which is what happened for the majority of the series that worked in Jump so far at some point (or survived for at least 1+ year).

The fact that editorial isn't willing to put even Yuuna below any of them is a telling sign reception wise (for now).

Which mangas would Jump put at the bottom under Yozakura and Mitama? at most Yuuna, they don't have any cushion at the moment, there's no reason why the editors would put their best selling mangas in the bottom 3 just to make two newbies look good, this is why i said if both were instant hits or at least have a more visible popularity, but everybody could se what was about to happen when they canceled the 4 series.
