Fire Rabbit has entered the final arc
Well that's a bummer for Hirakawa. I really love her artwork, and Tenshi to Akuto was fantastic, but I didn't find myself enjoying Fire Rabbit nearly as much. It was alright, but that was about it. This will be her shortest serialization by far: Kunisaki Izumo no Jijou was 19 volumes, Tenshi to Akuto was 17 volumes, but Fire Rabbit will be less than half of that. I really hope she decides to come back again soon.

A little more on time is this week's talk back! I realize now I could have just waited till next week to do this rather than get it out now since there's a week off but eh. This bigger thing here is that, well....Ping Kong is actually kind of great? I read it once before doing the talkback and wasn't sure about it but on a second read I was really entertained. I don't see it lasting long whether it be successful or not, but if it can stay this funny and weirdly heart felt for it's whole run then I'd say it's a winner.
I'm really not sure what to say about Ping Kong besides "well, that happened" lol. In the span of 2 pages, my confusion increased exponentially. The constant artstyle changes throughout the chapter also threw me off a bit. However, I think I'll stick with it for a couple more chapters at least.

I was thinking in reading Fire Rabbit. Now that is ending, what would be your opinion about it?

I am missing the adventures-action titles in WSS. I think right now it has only Ariadne in the Sky (which really surprises me is having very very very little repercusion despite being from Claymore author), and Fire Rabbit, aren't them? Magi was the last big adventures-manga title in WSS, but I recall how last decade was golden (Gash Bell, The Law of Ueki, MÄR, Kekkaishi).

Weekly Shonen Sunday volumes 2019/2018 - 4,119,246 / 7,328,841

Oof, that's really a major drop. Conan being on such a hiatus really had a major impact. Hopefully WSS finds another hit ASAP. I'm assuming this must be excluding all of Daiku's volume sales that must be blowing up the charts off-screen lol.

I mean Daiku sold one more copy of every volume recently as I doubled down to get it in print, so that’s probably a 100% increase in sales right there

also:
- 3 volumes of Dagashi Kashi and the last volume of magi was released in 2018 financial year
- 4 major 2nd volumes in 2018 (+anime) vs 2 in 2019
- the same about conan (2 vs 1)

Conan health hiatus was in 2018 though, not 2019. Conan also had more chapters in 2019 (21 chapters) than in 2018 (16 chapters).

Dude, it's about volume sales, not chapters release.
The reply above you already explained it in detail.
The hiatus in 2018 is what causes less volume to be released in 2019.

Dude, Conan released only one volume less than last year - and that was Shogakukan's own choice. The chapters for Conan volume 97 were ready in June, but Shogakukan elected to release the volume in December instead of October, like they did last year.

This was not the hiatus hurting their sales, it was their own release schedule hurting the sales.

"Sales" aren't hurt this way at all, they only move it to one or another year which for a lot of reasons (economical/fiscal/promotion) is surely thought out decision by such a huge publisher.

This talk is literally just putting reasoning behind why there's such a big discrepancy between 2018 v 2019 and even one volume less of Conan is adding to that. No need to be so pedantic about details here.

It seems like some of Sunday series got a drastic drop in sales lately. I was surprised to see that Komi-san sadly fell from Oricon charts before achieving 100.000 sales for the first time in 2-3 years. Thankfully Komi was short on the days so it's not that dramatic, at least compared to Major and Zero's Tea Time.

Komi-san #14 - 117.085 (17 days)
Komi-san #15 - 98.113 (14 days)

Major 2nd #16 - 150.733 (17 days)
Major 2nd #17 - 109.890 (17 days)

Detective Conan Zero's Tea Time #3 - 321.006 (33 days) it only needed 5 days to sell 185.864 copies
Detective Conan Zero's Tea Time #4 - 174.415 (14 days)

Major 2nd can be explained with the hiatus making it lose some of the buzz, Vol 16 was released more than a year ago. For Tea Time, Vol 3 and 4 were separated for whole 7 months so that might have affected things.

Sadly, Komi seems to have peaked, which isn't surprising as it's on Vol 15 now without any support. Though 15 is probably around what 14 did, so I don't see it as much of a red flag at all. Just that it's not growing anymore. Shogakukan needs to give it an anime as fast as possible.

Major is in regress for a long time. I wouldn't say that breaks are the main reason for drops in sales, especially for series that have or at least should have a more build up fan-base (more than 20 years on the market) but surely it partially connects to it.

In case of Major and DC ZTT hype at the beginning could be a downfall for them. Since they really outperformed themselves it's not a surprise they fell but both cases are really too drastic. Popularity drop for Tea Time is most likely one of the reasons they decided to go for Police spin-off too.

As an avid reader of Komi-san I would say that as a series it became better but it surely needs some marketing magic. In a way I'm scared that anime could be too late here, mostly because for the type of series it's (rom-com/fluffy stuff) earlier hard pushes work better even with sub-par adaptations (Dagashi vs Denpa is a good example). If it'll get half-assed anime it won't do much so I wish that this means they're trying to find the best possible studio/director for it.
