While I obviously don't think the tragedy is the sole aspect of the appeal, there is something to be said about how it draws people in.

Think of it. In modern society, the rise of the internet and social media has meant people are more visible to the scope of the world as a whole, and all the tragedy that comes with it. We view tragedy in such a way that it becomes more difficult to perceive a world without it. And, consequently, we desire fewer stories which have a truly carefree perspective on life, where heroes can get through everything as long as their determined enough, and friendship trumps everything.

Maybe that's why Jump ditched "Friendship, Effort, Victory". Society has evolved to a point where people can't believe in a childish thing like that.

For reference, if someone tried to create a character like Luffy today, I think they'd be laughed at.
If you knew the history of oda behind one piece, you will 100% understand that luffy character is hugely respected till to this day. Even my brother that is an fan since the 70's shonen respect an mc like luffy.

First new series is the serialization of a oneshot Undead+Unluck by Yoshifumi Tozuka.

OMG. Are they serializing THIS? I give up on Nakano. Bad paneling, bad art, graphic sexual assault... It's the kind of low effort content I'd expect on some minor publication, not on WSJ.

The quality of the one shot and it likely being pretty different in serial form aside, it would be cool to see a strong-willed, tomboyish type female MC like the one shot seems to be going for.

I really, really hope the serialized version of Undead Unluck removes the sexual assault stuff. I like the design of the main girl a lot and seeing her get groped in every chapter would completely tank any enjoyment I would get out of the series.

I don’t know how high I should get my hopes for that, though. In some ways this concept getting a series seems like it might be in response to the popularity of Chainsaw Man, a title that can get pretty edgy and horny sometimes. Even though CM doesn’t cross that specific line, I wonder if WSJ editorial considered the gropey stuff a selling point when they greenlit Undead Unluck. Having a hard time being optimistic about that not being the case.

No such thing as luck. Various factors went in KNY's success.
1. A good source material that gripped people from the start in a non-cringy manner.
2. A good anime adaptation
3. The art is very unique, accessible and easy on the eyes but can also convey emotions quite well. Really helps the story.
4. The main theme of protective brother and the bond with his younger sister. This in itself is a big thing in Japan.
5. WSJ's marketing when it came to the manga volumes itself. The lack of volumes and selling out is a legit strategy that works especially well if said item is already a money maker. WSJ could easily have estimated that they needed to reprint higher copies just based on months Sept and Oct. But they didn't and they keep running out of volumes. I'd legit call it a marketing stunt by them and it's working wonders especially with the 1 person a volume rule at most stores.
And these are just the ones I can think at this moment.

Point is, it's not "luck". Thats like saying AoT or OP or Naruto or even Bleach were all luck. Everything clicked for KNY just like it did for those series.
Eeeeh I would say a couple of those points are luck. There are tons of series that have unique art styles, great source materials and amazing adaptations that don’t go on to sell millions.

On top of that, multiple factors like that all coming together in itself could be considered luck

Itadori in the very middle showcasing he's the next big thing. Once Haikyuu or Neverland end, expect Jujutsu to jump to the very first row

Shonen Jump Issue 6/7 Cover:
Love the hagoitas. Itadori's and Denji's are hilarious and Luffy's and Midoriya's are pretty detailed, those are my faves (They covered Hinata's hagoita though). I wish they released all the individual illustrations, I want to see their kimonos too.

New series, yay! Undead Unluck looks... fine I guess. It’s one of those concepts that I’m not completely sure would translate well to a full serialization.

Shonen Jump Issue 6/7 Cover:
Nice group cover, tho its another group without my man Hinomaru :emocat

Anyways, I finally was able to catch up with Act Age after a long time and boy now I regret catching up since now I have to wait lol Seriously this manga is so good, the art has gets better, the characters are great, their development is great, the humor feels natural, and the struggles got you hooked.

I remember back when it first started and it seemed like it could of been axe fodder (like I remember that it placed a bit low in the ToC some times Early on) but thankfully the author and artist delivered big time, so nice it managed to make a comeback so soon as well. In the hands of great director, an anime will just knock it out of the park with the voice acting and a nice ost

Undead Unluck looks disgusting. Nothing attractive about those characters. Need Erica serialization for a more wholesome Jump.

2020 is going to be a very important year. I consider this round of serializations as round of 5 new manga (with obligated 2 issues break because these two issues are double and special).

Also, the only romcom (Yuuna is an echii more than a romcom) and the only spokon are going to end this year (well, Haikyuu can last to 2021 but who knows anymore), so is time for Jump to be searching-creating-milking their new romcom and spokon (and in romcom case in theory this time it won't have strong rivals unless WSM manages to pull another succesful romcom, thing that I doubt since reaching the success levels 5toubun reached is a very rare feat).

Man, you're really reaching to create this narrative that modern Jump is soo much better than pre 2010's and that most series beforehand were braindead crap lol.

Tragic stories have been popular since eternity. Friendship and determination are still a big part of shounen manga and Tanjiro is in no way a unique, never seen before MC. He is a pretty generic "I'll do everything to save my sister" kind of protagonist that have existed since forever. Not saying he is a bad MC in anyway but its weird how you act like every MC before 2010 were all goofy lovable idiots like Luffy etc. That said your hot take about protagonists like Luffy being laughed at today is just incorrect...Just stop.

Ugh...What's up with all that sexual assault stuff by the MC. Hope it is at least toned down for the serialization.
If anything Tanjirou resembles more to classic Seiya from SS. Not only with the "I want to save my sister" thing, but also their personalities shares much in common.

First new series is the serialization of a oneshot Undead+Unluck by Yoshifumi Tozuka.

Finally! Love some new series! Especially with what's ending this year, something from this batch may very well survive. Though, Undead+Unluck does not feel not a Jump manga at all. Also, is it just me or is the art kind of rough? Really curious about what the serialized version's gonna look like, hopefully it's better.
