Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

The sales for those 3 series were all pretty similar, it's literally 3 flops that weren't popular in either Japanese or with western fans. Look further back than 1 single batch of all failures and you'll see, early western popularity doesn't correlate that much with Japanese popularity.

Again, Jujutsu and Act-age weren't really any more popular than other flops overseas yet they're two of the 3 big hits from the past couple years.
Okay, so a couple of things:

1) if there is no correlation at all, then how come you keep bringing up the same few examples?

2) you do realise not every Western fan is scouring the internet for illegal scans, right? Until a year ago, I had no idea Act-Age and JJT even existed, because - unlike in Japan - there wasn't really a place for Western fans to go and discover all the new WSJ series. 'Western popularity' back then was dependent on the whims of Edited Manga groups and the popularity of certain websites, which makes for a rather unfair comparison.

3) in fact, how did you even measure Western popularity? Did you add up the views from every single Edited Manga website? Are you sure illegal scan viewings correlate with sales?

I mean, I'm sure certain series got more attention than others, but they weren't starting from the same place. Now, with M+, we can compare series that were launched on the same site, around the same time, and with the same level of attention, which is exactly how it happens in Japan.

I've mentioned a bunch of different example of stuff that had a good amount of talk on western sites but flopped in Japan.

You're literally comparing 3 failures. Heck if anything TSS just proves the point, it got pretty good views on Manga+ (it's sitting at more than half of Act-age's views for example) but didn't sell or rank much better than Double Taisei and got cancelled at the same time. If you want another manga+ example look at Yozakura and Mitama, Yozakura has more than 4 times as many views as Mitama (already higher than TSS's total) yet Mitama's overall had decent-ish ToC placements until this issue while Yozakura was hanging around under Yuuna.

You can't judge Japanese popularity on western popularity. They just don't correlate much aside from the clear instant successes like MHA and Ass Class and Chainsawman (though even CSM took a few chapters before it was safely popular in Japan).

Nice, I checked Kimetsu twitter and it have almost million followers. I don't be surprised if hit milion before movie.

How much money at box office do you think Kimetsu earn, I think more or less 2 Billion Yen.

For comparison this is data about other anime movies box office.

The winner in Japan is RWBY lol. Does that even count as anime? I guess that's the kind of thing Crunchyroll streams in Japan.

I imagine the Eskimos sitting around a tiny phone a foreigner brought to watch HxH. "Who's this killua? Wow he has white hair, he's like a penguin"

Ohh, Lock-On good times, this one with Akaboshi and Kagijin were the first "flop" series that i read at the time without even knowing about toc, rankings and etc, just knowing that they were not popular, but i remember a lot of commotion about Akaboshi ending early, it was one of these failures that many readers got attached.

That's like when I read Samon before knowing WSJ was even a thing lol. Speaking of flop series, I just finished reading Shinmai Fukei Kiruko-san this morning after seeing someone mention it on 4chan, and it was actually a pretty nice series. If they could've toned down the MC's lecherous personality a tiny bit, it would've been really great. I'm pretty bummed it ended up getting axed, but at least it had a really nice ending, especially for an axed series.

New Years tweets from Oda and Horikoshi.
Wow, Horikoshi said Happy New Year's in English as well. I don't recall this happening in his other tweets, so that's really nice! He does have a pretty damn large Western following, so it's nice to see him communicate in this manner!

The winner in Japan is RWBY lol. Does that even count as anime? I guess that's the kind of thing Crunchyroll streams in Japan.
To be fair, if people in Japan wanted to watch anime, they could just watch TV at certain times or just go on some of the bigger platforms such as Netflix (who actually releases the anime episode right after it's aired in Japan) or Hulu. Crunchyroll's mainly focused on bringing anime to a more global market, so I imagine their selection in Japan is pretty slim there.

Talk doesn't equal sales. You're literally looking at a few hundred people there, at most.

You're literally comparing 3 failures. Heck if anything TSS just proves the point, it got pretty good views on Manga+ (it's sitting at more than half of Act-age's views for example) but didn't sell or rank much better than Double Taisei and got cancelled at the same time. TSS sold about twice as much as Double Taisei/Beast Children. It also has roughly twice as many views on M+.

Do I really need to explain to you why older series that were never completely available on M+ have comparatively lower views?

And Yozakura has a higher average ToC ranking than Mitama. Please don't make up numbers to suit your narrative.

You can't judge Japanese popularity on western popularity. They just don't correlate much aside from the clear instant successes like MHA and Ass Class and Chainsawman (though even CSM took a few chapters before it was safely popular in Japan).
So you keep repeating. I will wait until we have more results from M+ to see if it has any merit.
