What is Comedy Sportz then? Is that not a team based competitive acting sport?
I am not familiar with it, but a quick google search says it is the name of an organization that organizes competitions involving improv comedy? Just because it does have 'sports' in its name doesn't make it sports, It is basically team-based comedy competition. When I was a kid, we had a competition between schools, something like a quiz show, which followed a tournament system similar to sports competition, does that make it a sport? Competition is not equal to sports.

That being said I don't think there's anything wrong with calling a series sport manga if that series have similar setting to 'ComedySportz' and mangaka treats it as a sport. You can say that it's a made-up sport, is Act-Age like that?

Are martial arts manga sports or battle.

Is something like Teekyu a sports series because they're in a tennis club, it's called "tennis" and they sometimes play tennis or is it not because the majority isn't about tennis.

Things bleed between genres all the time. Kaguya is obviously a rom-com but I'd argue the psychological warfare makes it closer to Death Note than Nisekoi.

What is a sport then?
A googled definition gives me
"an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment."
As an actor, and someone who used to be heavily involved in Comedy Sportz, I can assure you that it fits that criteria perfectly.
Also, no I'm not just considering it a sport because of its name. I'm considering it one because I was involved in it rather than just quickly googling the title and proceeding to write a few paragraphs about something I know nothing about.

Broaden your perspective folks. Not everything is as black and white as you perceive it to be.

Ok, I guess if conversation came to defining sports, then it's time for me to stop. Like I said, I don't know much about it, if you're saying it's a sports than ok it's a sports. I can't really say anything because really I don't know. But that still doesn't make acting a sport.
I also don't know much about Act-Age, I have never read it. Maybe mangaka regards acting as a sport and it's not wrong to call it sports manga. But saying Bakuman is a sports manga is really absurd.

Wait, you haven't read the series? Why are you trying to discuss it then?
Regardless, I wouldn't consider Act-Age a sports manga. However, even beyond just Comedy Sportz I would absolutely consider acting a sport on a personal level.
You're physically and emotionally working and competing with your cast to create something special.
I feel the people arguing against acting being a sport have never been on a stage.

I have read/watch Bakuman and Shokugeki no Soma, and I am pretty sure I haven't talked about the content of Act-Age. I was just saying I don't consider acting as a sport in general. I don't have to read Act-Age to say that. Also, I still don't understand why you're considering acting as a sport and why I should experience acting to understand it. But I guess, I don't have to. We just have different opinions on that matter. Let's just say I understand why you're considering Act-age as a sports manga, even though I don't agree with it.

Unless kimetsu...?
I started typing something a day ago, but didn’t post it, and forgot to delete it.
So it’s still there in my recent post
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

You have to ignore far more conventions of sports manga than I have to make the “battle manga and sports manga are the same” generalization. To start, sports manga are much more grounded in reality than battle manga, and based off of real life activities and hobbies. Both of these things still apply to Bakuman.

I’m not sure if I understand the second part of your argument, that whether or not something is a sports manga should be defined by its audience. I read Bakuman BECAUSE I love the manga industry, so if the qualifier is that it has to draw in people that enjoy the activity in question, Bakuman still qualifies.

On top of that, someone who loves basketball might not be interested in Haikyuu, a volleyball manga. That doesn’t mean that Haikyuu isn’t a sports manga. Just because I wouldn’t recommend Bakuman to that person either doesn’t eliminate the fact that Bakuman follows pretty much every sports manga convention to a tee, and is as compelling as it is because it treats a mundane subject like manga creation as if it were a sport.
I just don’t see that as making sense at all
Regardless of the writing convention and tropes, acting and writing manga isn’t a sport. So I don’t think series about writing manga or about acting can be called a sports series.
Imo it’s just not much deeper than that.

Any explanations and reasoning as to why Act-Age and Bakuman classify as sports manga just feel forced and contrived imo

The thing is not to discuss whether acting is an sport depending on what does the activity require from the performer, but what the series is actually trying to reflect: the competition that acting can actually become or the personality, feelings, evolution, and overall drama of a main character while they try to achieve something. And even if Act-Age basically shows both, I really consider it's way balanced to the second option, which is why I can't just force Act-Age in a 'Sport Category' and reduce everything the series is in just a competition between actors and actresses (which actually not a single Sport series does because character development is way too relevant in all of these series, but you get what I mean, it's just like putting series in a balance and determining which is the most distinguished element in the series).

Genres or categories are not one and only, they're pretty flexible and even arcs sometimes shift the whole genre of a series, but analyzing the whole, I don't think Sport is the best category to fit Act-Age in.

The current discussion is very interesting, although I do have to say that I agree that Bakuman definitely wasn't a spokon.

Back in the day, all I used to read was battle series. Bakuman was the one series that hooked me and made me start to appreciate the other genres.

And it did that because it had elements of a battle series, even though it wasn't technically one. I agree that competition should be it's own category, and Bakuman definitely fits into it.

As an aside, Hinomaru Zumou was a spokon, but I'll be damned if it didn't have battles/action that surpassed a lot of battle series.

A sports manga is a manga about sports. I am not sure why you're trying to redefine it. A manga about cooking competition, manga creation or acting is not a sports manga, because those things are not considered sports. Whether or not they've competition elements is not relevant. Like it has already been said, battle mangas also have competition elements, are they sports manga too?

Using 'competition manga' to describe series like Bakuman, Shokugeki no Soma or majority of sports manga is ok. But saying 'competition manga' is a better term for 'sports manga' is also not true. While most of the sports series are about competitive sports, a manga about non-competitive sports (like mountain climbing, fishing, etc.) would still be a sports manga.
That's not the same thing at all. In the world of food wars cooking fights is a sport. It's written like a sports manga. Shokugeki is a fake sport made just for that manga. That doesn't automatically make it not a sports manga. That's like saying galactic football isn't a cartoon show because the sport is fake.

Cooking competitions are a thing in real life, and they’re simply considered “Cooking Competitions”, not a sport.

That's a hard question for me. Sumo wrestling is a martial art yet I ain't see a soul call hinomaru sumo a battle manga. But then again, it's a martial arts manga that is set entirely around competing in sumo wrestling tournaments right? It feels more sport ish. Like if you compare it to History's greatest deciple Kenichi. It's all martial arts but it doesn't revolve around tournaments with set rules for sportsmanship. Everyone is going around fucking each other up. With no rules, no competition. It's just all out fighting

That's a valid point tbh. Since when where coming competitions not seen as a sport. Am I retarded or something? Like, I've always seen it as a sport but some other people don't. It tocks all the boxes in my book. (And other people's)

Give me a sports manga with actual superpowers. I want to see angels, demons, wizards, giants, mutants, aliens, etc. compete in teams against each other to see which team becomes the best of whichever sport they are playing.

Honestly, putting aside this spokon talk, one series I'd love to see is a mangaka's take on how existence came to be.

In Bleach that was tackled briefly, but I want that concept fully explored. Also, not the artificial universe thing Bleach tried to pull, but something more tangible.

Now that I think about it, Toriko and Bleach both explained how their universes came to be, and they're both two of my favorites.

Perhaps that isn't a coincidence.
