Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Weren't a couple early WSJ manga about politics? Like I think Barefoot Gen went into that side of stuff, and the translated Gaki Daisho stuff so far has been largely about the stock market.

I'd actually love to see that kind of series in Jump. Something like a young adult protagonist who comes up from poverty in a fictional nation and tries to change it from the inside. Plus you could get lots of Death Note-esque mind battles and machiavellian antagonists to boot.
There has to be sprinkles of fantasy elements to make it possible so it doesnt look like it targets a very realistic aspect of certain groups

Just as the thought crossed mind - I would love to see a assassin manga similar to John wick, I think it would work really well in jump.

I know there’s currently Yozakura but seems it’s gone more with the wacky action route (still like it though)

Also I’m really curious/excited to see how Yozakura and Mitama sell. As they would have had quite a while to build up a small fan base compared to pass new series. Whether that will give them a better chance at a good first sale or not will be interesting

Black Cat.

Still holding out hope Yabuki will attempt Part 2 like he's always teased. Maybe in Young Jump.

Yeah, rereading Toriko now I really fucking wish it was 700 chapters with a space arc, holy shit that would have been amazing, best scaling in terms of powers, organizations, characters, fights I've seen in Jump period. And it's actually relatively a complex plot, by that I mean it's not straightforward but has lots of small twists and turns. Current Jump really is in dire need of more of those.
Power scaling?? lool, everyone can make a power scaling like toriko. For worldbuilding, toriko was really appealing for it. Beautiful

Maybe Zipman if it survives will give us those space battles in the future
Not gonna lie imo, I want zipuman to succeed. As long it keeps going to the right direction, it can really be the kamen rider mha for japan instead of USA like mha

While we're talking about seeing new genres in jump

What does everyone think is the strangest series conceptually that we've had be successful in the magazine? it's odd reading a hit stock market manga but I suppose the 70s were different times.

From a western perspective, I'm still shocked that we had a manga about high schoolers with guns trying to murder their teacher in a classroom setting (and that it became one of Jump's most popular ever series). At least from the surface it seems like such a hot take to have in a kids magazine in the 21st century (putting aside the half baked Japanese education system social commentary and nearly non existent character development/focus for most of the cast).

Guys, do you recommend me Samurai 8? Heard good things about it. I know it started bad for many but it got a lot better, from what I know. Should I pick it up?

Assassination Classroom for sure. It has a very weird and weak premise and generic setting (imo), but with a unique touch to it (the teacher being an alien and the students being assassins)

I have to say One Piece. A pirate manga is a little strange for a concept now that I thought about it.

And it wasn't really a hit or anything, but Mind Assassin had a pretty atypical concept for a Jump manga.

Death Note. It's the most unique manga for me on WSJ, by far. Nothing remotely similar was able to exist there since then.

It never started "bad" just a bit slow, the art for some were a bit confused too but overall it was fine and gets better each chapter specially with ch7.

As someone that really enjoy the manga i recommend but i would also recommend to not read comparing to Naruto or putting so much weight in the fact its from Kishi, that's the problem with some people reading this manga, comparisons and comparisons instead of judging on its own, it's not any masterpiece but its a perfectly enjoyable manga so far with lots of potential.

Jump still has One Piece. Black Clover, MHA, Chainsaw man and jujutsu kaisen all have plots that aren't exactly straight forward. I think that's more than enough.
I disagree on all of those except one piece. Even their twists and turns are relatively simple, which is not a bad thing in itself.
I'd also contest on calling Toriko's plot "complex". The series that a massive amount of lore, but the characters and general direction of the series are very simple.
There were large complicated events with many different things going on at once and even for a simple fetch quest like some gourmet world arcs there was such a complex world built around just that one mission, modern series are simply simpler compared to it.

Naw. Power scaling has many aspects to it and is not simply about upping the numbers, contrary to what you believe.

Anyone know where charts guy went?

Bastard!! Heavy Metal Dark Fantasy.

It had some DnD stuff going on at the start and it was always just on the border of being a sienen. Despite the dark and gritty tone of the world and the events taking place it never took it self too seriously which ar first I found kinda jarring. Like, breaking the 4th wall while facing against monsters that ate literally killing everyone around them.

Im trying not to spoil here but when it gets to the later parts of the story when we see the ancient kingdom and how it was destroyed that threw me right off. I didn't expect any of that. I don't think I have ever seen a manga that actually has a plot tied in to the actual Christian Bible. Not some mythology that has loosely got some biblical inspiration or whatever. The actual bible. Being a Christian growing up in a Christian household I found that so sick 🤣

Sorry for rambling 🤪

I really would like to see more manga like Bastard though. The closest we have in jump in terms of the world is Black Clover since it's the only other fantasy I can think off. Though its norse mythology. And the closest manga to Bastard in recent times imo is Chainsawman cause they are both just barely shonen manga and are extremely hilarious without being a comedy and various other reasons... I'm gonna stop now.

Not Jump, but Magi dabbled heavily in distorted Abrahamic mythology towards the end (David, Solomon) (and often teased throughout).

Always found it kinda werid how it turned from wizard magic to literal Heaven vs Hell. Bastard!! is way more bizarre than Jojo is, I can tell you that.
I do think that Chainsaw Man is our current Bastard!!, both series kind of have that insane 14 year old ultimate fantasy type of feel to it. Let's just hope that the hiatus doesn't hit Fujimoto for Chainsaw.
