At my past workplace tons of girls wore glasses. This article does not represent Japan as a whole. "There don’t appear to be any official numbers on how widespread the bans are." Wake me up when it's not some Twitter storm being covered by desperate media outlets.
Again, i think discussing sex and discussing violence is two completely different things.
It goes back to the rule of writing of “don’t include things like assault or rape in your stories because it tends to make people uncomfortable”.
I see nothing weird wanting to write a story about say, a guy who fights demons with chainsaws. It’s fantasy. No one ACTUALLY believes they can do that, nor does anyone actually want to live in a world where they have to survive by fighting demons with a chainsaw. It’s just a fun story. People tend to write and create stories of things they find cool or fun.
But if we’re talking say, something like Ero-Manga Sensei. A series that features a 10 year old girl who wears lingerie and talks about sex. What reason would some desire to make something like that? What’s fun and cool about that? I’m not going to necessarily say that creating such a series means they’re a predator. But it’s very questionable that someone would even think about making that as a series.
And going back to Undead Unluck to stay on topic with Jump series. The entire appeal of echii and fan service is that the writer and readers find said fan service hot. Does writing sexual assault mean that you’ll go out and sexually assault someone in real life? No. But the fact that you’re actively thinking up stories of a girl being assaulted and not writing it in a negative light means that you like find something appealing about it to include it in your story
This is completely subjective. You can say " A series that features a _____ who _____ and _____. What reason would some desire to make something like that?" About literally anything.
Sexual assault is a real life thing. Women experience it every second of every day. We shouldn't normalize it, regardless if it's fictional.
You guys can keep bringing up ultra violence as a counter, but that's not something that actually occurs to the vast majority of people. Suspension of disbelief is a thing, and killing devils is way easier to accept as "not real" than a girl getting groped against her will.
Like, I already said I'll check the first chapter out, but that groping definitely isn't a good look, regardless. Yes, fiction and all, but you have to remember that women in Japan are conditioned a certain way, to think a certain way. Using Japan as a barometer might not be the best strategy if you're going to resort to whataboutism.
How do women experience it every second of every day?
If I am scared of being murdered because I read that the gun devil can eradicate entire cities am I being murderally abused every second of every day?
New research from Japan has highlighted how much sexual harassment there is affecting the lives of ordinary people. Seventy percent of women responding to a survey say they have been targeted in some way in public.

Now, friends, try to argue to me that having manga characters who act like that and are still treated as heroes (Roshi and Sanji anyone) doesn't feed back into this.
Let's also not forget the stories about how Harenchi Gakuen caused such a pandemic of skirt-flipping at elementary schools that Shueisha was forced to cancel the manga.
Do you not understand that sexual assault is closer to reality than demon killing is? Yes, in this case, both are fictional. However, again, one hits closer to home.
And I'm not arguing that reading this manga is going to increase sexual assault. It doesn't need to increase for it to be a bad thing. It just needs to normalize.
Also violence IS a concern in US media.
There was a time where Call Of Duty games caused a huge uproar in 2009 when Modern Warfare had a level where the player had to commit a mass shooting. They had to add a “warning” message before playing the level, and also gave the option for players to skip the level if they wanted before release because of the backlash. In the remaster the removed it altogether
And this wasn’t a “video games make people violent” controversy. This was something the genuinely made people uncomfortable because it was very real. It felt real, and it disturbing because mass shootings in that manner is very real.
None of the violence in any Shonen Jump series feels real. Non of the violence in ANY popular action property, whether it’s Marvel, DC, Star Wars, etc. feels real. It’s all feels like fantasy, and is an escape from the real world, which is why there’s no controversy about Goku blowing up an evil alien with a giant energy beam.
Another thing you don’t point out is that most of Jump’s action series depict a unrealistic violence between a heroic characters fighting evil. Which fulfills a lot of people’s fantasies where we could just beat up all of the evil in the world with superpowers. That or tournament arcs, where the idea of leaving in a world where your friends can have friendly fights with each other using superpowers sounds pretty fun.
I think violence in Chainsaw and especially Jujutsu feels real. ESPECIALLY JUJUTSU.
Imagine having a school shooter arc or a kill the partying citizens of Shibuya arc.
I don’t want to linger on the topic too much longer since it was requested that it be stopped.
But in this case the action is what feels real. Not the setting.
In the COD example I gave. If you replaced the human people with Vampires wielding machine guns, it would still be upsetting because mass shootings is a very real act of violence.
And even then, again, violence is different than sex. Violence can be included in a story with the narrative purpose of making readers uncomfortable. There aren’t many scenarios where assault can have narrative purpose within the story, especially when it’s a comical gag.
Sex and sexual assault can also be used in a story to make readers uncomfortable, like Steel Ball Run and Jojolion. It's done very well there.
Your points seem to come from a myopic background due to being so firmly convinced in your beliefs.
Same actually. Also it's bukkorosu a lot of the time.

Also on Jujutsu, it may be hard to understand if you haven't been to the places in the story but they really did their best to make the locations seem VERY realistic to the point that it's kinda fucked up. Just for some perspective... Some people might even get too spooked to party next Halloween in Shibuya lolol
Catcalling or singing romantic songs is not something that I think should be censored in media. I get that it's hard on your friend, doesn't mean it shouldn't be portrayed.
*It means it should be portrayed as bad behavior which men need to get rid of instead of being normalized and played for jokes.
Fixed it for you, no need to welcome.

A curious fact. When learning Japanese we are literally told that the language itself is already sexist. Then we have tons of cases of women being discriminated at work, misogyny in all kinds of places, media treating women as tools. If you can't see that Japan has a clear misogyny problem, then you are willingly turning a blind eye to it for personal reasons.

Well, aren't you a man trying to downplay women's daily struggles with sexual harassment. Always great to see huh.
Well I think catcalling is rude but I don't think romantic gestures to strangers are bad in and of themselves.
Can you give specific examples of how women are treated as tools, work discrimination, misogyny in "all kinds" of places, and how the language itself is sexist, that are unique to Japanese culture?
Surely you don't believe sexual assault occurs on a second to second basis to every female currently alive.
What about attractive males? When they get hit on, how is that suddenly a positive thing? Or does everyone just choose to brush that away?
To tie it back in to Jump, let's wait until the chapter releases and then see.
Not really trying to opening the discussion again, but sometimes i feel like if someone read this thread without knowing anything about it, they would think Japan is a horrible place to live or to be a woman, because the level of overreaction that you read sometimes, do any of you actually lives in Japan and face the "everyday struggle of being a women in the so evil and misogynist Japan", or you guys are just making up stuff based in some articles? because seriously, saying stuff like "the japanese language itself is sexist" is something that i expect to read on tumblr, like come on, much less please, everybody knows that women suffer from these things and etc but this constant tone about Japan as if is some hell for woman is quite annoying.
So, question guys, do you think Samurai 8's overseas sales would save the series or no? I don't think so, but I'm asking for what you guys think given that it's an argument a bunch of people have been saying to me.

I don't know enough about Japanese to make informed claims or give examples, but to say that a language (any language) is sexist is a pretty uncontroversial statement and an actual focus of studies, not at all "tumblr stuff".

It'll delay cancellation long enough to do more than he would've been able to, but I don't know if it'll be enough time to do everything he wanted to (especially if he was willing to work on this for 20+ volumes).

If you want to go deep on the study of a country language, discussing and etc, okay, but in the middle of a more "superficial" discussion as if in this thread, it just sounds like overreaction, "oh even the language of this country is sexist, Japan is bad!", it's like i said, sometimes the tone here about Japan as a whole gets too exaggerated when it's this kind of topic.

IIRC s8's overseas sales are overstated by its fans, especially considering the publishers bought super early into the hype, advertised it a lot, overstocked etc. so a somewhat similar situation to what happened in japan.
For context: even in countries like Italy and France, where S8 fans claim it's a massive success, the volumes got outsold by random kimetsu backlog. So take that as you will.
Highly unlikely. Selling better outside of Japan is rarely done and the biggest example I could find is fairytail.
Reaching Jump's standards through overseas sales without an anime is pretty much impossible. It could possibly help prevent cancellation, but it's pretty much impossible for it to stay in jump.
All established Jump battle manga with or without anime have as many, if not more views on mangaplus. Not proof, but the relative amount of people willing to read it through legal means is seemingly low considering the known author boost.
Catcalling or singing romantic songs is not something that I think should be censored in media. I get that it's hard on your friend, doesn't mean it shouldn't be portrayed.
The anime is shit compared to what happens after. It's universally agreed amongst manga readers that the anime doesn't come CLOSE to the future arcs. They made the mistake of slowing the pace and adapting only the worst arcs.

I mean that's technically Denji's main motivation ad well, the difference is that if the zombie dude is actually just groping her leading into rape and shit like that then I'm out. Too cringe

Of all shonen series that had a chance at beating One Piece I think Kimetsu deserves it most.
Yo why though? I'm nit trying to say this is all the series is worth and I still reeeally like it but it's basically Dragon Ball with Swords. You've got to admit. It's like 90% fights and barely anything else. Just non stop fights fights fights fights. Like comon it's a simple series. You think that should beat OP?
I think one manga that deserved to beat OP is toriko but the world is unfair. Whaaa
I like the fact that HQ is showing some growth in sales again but we will need to see if it is significant in any way. The decline has been pretty massive over the last few years.
Some of these comments that are trying to counter women harassment are just so bad that it's starting to be funny. You're literally part of the problem and the reason progress takes forever.
I'm done with this topic.
Rain, YOU need to stop bringing up S8 every chance you get. It's not doing you any favors and shows your bias against it even if you are arguably making valid points. You must know this by now.
If S8 gets the axe or not, we will find out eventually.
