Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

For real? Wow I thought there was people in Japan also reading manga chapters... I mean, I don't browse 2ch, but don't they have like threads talking about the newest chapter days in advance or something?

If Japanese people don't really read manga ahead of time then disregard everything I said :/ I thought there was also a portion of Japanese readers that also read scans ahead of the official release, if that's not the case then there's probably not a big motivation for Shueisha to change their model any time soon.
Per my knowledge, reading and sharing leaked chapters is considered incredibly disrespectful in Japan. Most JP user complain whenever us gaijin are doing it.

And yeah, you can seriously get sent to jail for such things. Just look up Mangamura for an example.

While looking up mangamura one of the early links showed that the pirate site was pretty popular in Japan, and when the surveyed manga user over whether or note they feel guilty about pirating the majority said “no”.

The survey doesn’t represent the mindset of most of Japan, but I think it’s safe to say at the very least that a decent amount of ppl do pirate with no shame there

Does this mean that VIZ technically releases Shonen Jump before Japan now (even though it's only off by a few hours)?
Shueisha could be starting to release chapters at midnight digitally. I think Jump SQ does (why we've been getting those at midnight Japan time since the current format)

They've always released before Japan because chapters were released at 12am PDT/5am JST. Obviously 5am is way too early for a bookstore to be open so people can't buy their WSJ copies then. The difference now is that the chapters will be released online at the turn of the day in Japan (12am JST), so still Monday there.

don't convenience stores carry Jump? I'm not sure about Japan but here most of the major chains are open 24 hours a day so selling at 5 AM would be possible.

Someone posted Manga Plus’ numbers for the first week since Jaimini’s Box and Mangastream stopped translating Jump series, and all of the series that were typically leaked on Friday had a significant increase in views that week.

I even personally know some people who had no clue that Mangastream wasn’t the official release, and thought they were reading the official releases of every Jump series since Mangastream was a thing

You can’t kill leakers completely. And some ppl will still read the leakers. But I’m sure, even in Japan, if the official chapters of each series were released before the leaks, and apps like manga plus was heavily promoted, a lot of ppl would gravitate towards official since it’ll be easy to access, and they can read it there first
This doesn't really have much to do about what you said but I'm just gonna make a comment.
Official release has two problem, at least in the English version, in my opinion.

1. The double page spreads aren't shows as one page but split across 2. That's irritating in my opinion.

2. They censor too much. Waaaaay too much. A character can't even say piss or shit. I'll be changed to some something dumb or just taken out entirely. Or like even in one piece chapter 967. They changed scum to scoundrels. What the fuck. Is this like 4kids or something? I think you said that you think the profanities in scans are fake but imo they can't because some scentenses characters say don't make that much sense without it. Or just sounds off. Idk. There are times where characters use thier middle finger so having swearing definitely isn't something shonen manga aren't allowed to use.

It's a very petty reason but that's why I try to read the scans still. I just don't like the corny kiddie speech it's really jarring.

There's the possibility they won't start selling until morning, but yeah selling early in conbinis might be a case.

1. It's a mangaplus problem, not exactly a english version problem, Viz app is fine. Either way, change it to horizontal mode and it should solve the issue. It's a problem, though, I agree.

2. Sorry, but scans do add a lot more curse words than what's actually in the original. Mangastream was especially bad about it. I can't say much about the majority of examples, but I saw scum/scoundrel being explained by someone fluent in japanese and scoundrel is actually much closer to the original.

Idk about mobile, but I typically read new chapters on an iPad on the Shonen Jump app, it the display is pretty nice and double pages appear on the whole screen.

And personally I prefer censoring over the alternative that a lot of fanslation groups do, which is throwing expletives throughout the series.

The double page thing is really annoying, horizontal or vertical, still the same thing, i don't really know what is so hard in just puting the double pages like they're supposed to be.

The quality pages are also quite poor, i just got a new smartphone last month, a quite bigger screen than the one i had until now and man, drop in the quality of the pages is noticeable with a bigger screen, isn't something that kills the enjoyment but is quite bizarre that scans are able to deliver much better quality than the official.

And finally, the chapters being deleted, this is something that i will never not complain, i can try to understand with the giant series like One Piece, BNHA and etc but i just don't understand whats the deal of deleting chapters for almost all series including the flop ones, this is supposed to be a official place where you can read free manga but you actually can't, any person that discovers a new manga because the app or wants to read one of the series with only 18 ~ 23 chapters can not do because they delete it for whatever stupid reason, i already had to read many chapters of Taisei, BC, Yui and Shinobi on Kissmanga because of it, and the sad thing? the fact that some people are actually asking for them to implement a monthly subscription in a free app instead of asking for them to just keep the chapters already posted in the app -_-

The app has a long way to go yet...

Lets not forget to mention the stupid line changes that they do for ZERO reason, or VIZ's constant use of putting WESTERN terms in JAPANESE manga, i'd rather read scans than see a characters say "BRUH, MY BRUH, MY BRUHS etc" every panel

....Literally every translator I talk to would instantly say that that's what you're supposed to do. If you want a literal version of the original Japanese, just learn frigging Japanese.

As for the technical issues, I believe that just compatibility issues? I never have issues with M+ on my PC.

This. Literal translations suck, there's so many things like proverbs and idioms and whatnot you either need to change, or have notes on every page explaining context.

Localization is important, yes. However, I think it's a balancing act. Like, making English-speaking fans understand what we're reading is one thing. Putting Zolo instead of Zoro is, well, being a bit too literal.

I think it's probably best when the translator is also a fan of the series, that way they're able to understand context and nuance.

"Zolo" is the result of some frankly very complicated trademarking decisions from over a decade ago that really can't be walked back on now. It sucks, but you have to live with it.

That was meant to replicate the Miya twins Kansai dialects. Having them talk like southerners is actually more accurate to the original Japanese.
