Someone has to be the innovator and take a risk in moving the industry forward.
Or move it backwards and scare the competition in trying to make the same exact move. They're the ones with numbers and profits on digital production, so I'm pretty sure they know better if they're actually prepared to do something like that.

Music switching to digital as first priority made sense since everyone was switching to digital music anyway with mp3 players and phones. Physical copies were becoming collector's things, rather than people buying physical stuff for the music itself. Just look at how Vinyls have overtaken CDs in sales at this point.

Manga however is still pretty physical focused, certain publishers barely even have a digital presence. Maybe at some point years down the line digital manga will be the #1 and phsyical will become purely for collectors, and can e shifted to lower priority, but for now, releasing a magazine days earlier digitally in Japan is a bad idea.
I’m not saying Manga should switch to being digital only. I’m saying releasing digital first would prevent it leaking.

From my experience working in retail, yes, we do get a product earlier than it is released.

Say something typically comes out on Sunday. We may get it the Wednesday before.

However, if that production changes its releases from Sunday to Tuesday. We won’t continue getting it early on the exact same day. Instead of getting it on Wednesday’s before, we may get it on the Friday before now.

So I’m simply saying, pushing back the physical release date will cause it to be distributed later. Meaning that, while leakers will still receive a copy early, they’ll be receiving it early at a later date. Meaning that if the digital copy still comes out on the exact same day, than leaks would have a harder time releasing it before the official digital release.

Here's an interesting question;

If you were the new editor of WSJ in Japan, name1-3 big (or small) changes you would implement.

I would;
1. Implement the break rotation thing we all spoke about last year. Allowing all mangaka to get breaks every now and then.
2. Reduce unnecessary bad sexual content in newer series.
3. Put more resources into Manga+ and promote the hell outta it, worldwide.
1. The first tankobon of a new series should be published right the month after it's completion.
2. There should be a oneshot in every issue. If it's not possible to have a newbie, take a special chapter from the author in Jump+ or the first chapter of a new series from the same app as a presentation.
3. The less popular series in Jump but that have at least a 15k-20k of tankobon sells should be moved on Jump+ and continue there until it's clear if it can get bigger or not.

Manga releasing digitally first in the current climate would still result in pirated sites having the chapter before the physical magazine releases, which is what most people in Japan read.

Sure, it'd be better for Western readers who only have a digital version, but the Japanese audience is significantly more important to Shueisha.

It worked for music because most people weren't really buying CDs much anymore anyway except as a collector, but, in this situation, the majority still buys physical copies despite digital versions being available at the same time.

ppl will gravitate towards which is ever is released first as long as it’s free. The majority of ppl who only read leaks and don’t buy the physical copy don’t care whether the first thing that’s released is the official source or the leaker. They just want the content ASAP.

If the magazine is released digitally before leakers leak it ppl who read the leaks will just read from the official source since it was up first, and people who prefer buying the magazine will just continue buying it

That's a pretty naive thinking knowing how aggregators keep getting thousands and thousands of views. It's not where it's first released, but also what the consumer knows. And because of piracy, the frequented sites manga readers keep visiting are aggregator sites, and they give them views, traffic and money since even if they're not the first place series that are updated, they're the most used services because of pure tradition, we could call it.

The best example out of this is how there's still people reading MANGA Plus ripped version on webs like mangakakalot, mangatail, mangasee, etc.

I think you’re way of thinking is overly pessimistic. Changing how they release things would show results over time, and it’s better than just not doing anything.

At the very least, releasing digitally before it leaks wouldn’t hurt either

Digital sales in the manga industry was higher than the print sales for the past few years (Although I have a feeling that 2019 will be different due to KNY). But this number does not apply to Shueisha's digital trend as only a generalized 30% of Shueisha manga are digital. WSJ might be even lower.
If you want the industry to push for digital, then Shueisha, with the biggest manga titles and magazines, should make the push for it. If the industry leader in reach and title recognition pushes for a shift, the industry itself will shift.

Also, I really like the idea of publishing digital manga first. Reasons being;
1. It'll push the industry to go digital (my point above)
2. It'll eventually make illegal scans and publishing irrelevant. But this would need a lot more marketing from Shueisha and other official manga distributors worldwide so that readers are aware of legal places to consume manga digitally. Most important factor would be that them reading a manga via an official digital channel benefits the creator of the work that they love and enjoy.

Think the biggest benefit of digital is that it'll also probably give newer series a larger audience to work with. Like what Rica said, maybe the japanese might not enjoy a series but the North American market might. That same series that sold 10k in Japan can probably become a big seller in other markets. It opens the door to many possibilities.

Eh, am I lying tho? We can just go back at seeing how Kimetsu no Yaiba had millions of views every single week on MangaRock when it literally was Viz's translation. It's not pessimistic, it's acknowledging that readers are lazy, that they do not care about the actual website they're reading on and what are they reading as long as they can actually differentiate the traces of the manga they're looking for. And that's why my main complain on all of this is that every communication team Shueisha is disposing for platforms like MANGA Plus is just a bunch of incompetent people who does not know how their own website work. And as pessimistic as it sounds, it's true. We cannot fix the attitude of consumers if the business itself that's offering the product does not try to put them to action, and even so, the whole community has such a bad habit it's beyond what we can imagine.

I'll just go back to what I said regarding releasing digitally, it doesn't hurt, but it does affect heavily the physical production, and that's not something that you can change in 1 day, not even in 1-2 years.

Oh. I might be wrong but I don't think anyone was implying 1 day or 1-2 years even. The music industry took a decade to shift to digital. They didn't recognize spotify consumption and youtube video consumptions until early to mid 2010s.
It takes time. But someone has got to start with said change and it's got to be the company with the biggest titles.

Releasing their main magazine online days earlier than the physical release (the version most people buy) is not the way to start switching people to digital. That's what they could maybe do after many years if most of the readerbase has become digital readers. Pirate sites will get the chapters earlier too, and people reading there already aren't going to switch to the legal service unless the site gets shut down.

Do we even know if Japan has a problem of early leaks anyways? The impression I got was MS/etc had a private contact and english leaks were actually releasing first.

Despite everything I said I just want to clarify that I still like DS and I am happy for its success. I guess I'm just a fanboy who wishes some other manga got this kind of boost.
Hey, the guy with Shun avatar here xD

Exactly my thoughts, like I don't really hate the series per see, just everything surrounding it, like I genuinely don't think episode 19 will live to the hype I have heard of it...

And there are so many other manga that deserve a little bit of the spotlight, but that's life, the 80/20 rule (Pareto principle).

I mean JUMP (and other magazines) coul realistically try to make a Netflix like subscription model or something (first starting in Japan), imagine paying 1,000 Yen a month and you get I don't know all of Shueisha's magazines online before the physical street day or something like that. Or maybe 500 yen a month to get digital WSJ some days before street date.

It's not like these leaks happen only outside of Japan, people in Japan also read leaks/chapters before street date, right?

If someone is gonna pirate they are gonna pirate, but there is people that will support the official release.

Put another way, there's also people in Japan that read scans of for example, One Piece and that doesn't mean there is also lots of people that will buy the print magazine.

Heck, it's not like JUMP the print magazine has value, like sure they can get expensive over time particularly when a new series gets popular, but most people just dipose of them.

I know I would certainly pay... maybe not $10 a month (because obviously mangaplus won't be offering every manga from every manga publication Shueisha offers in Japan but a "select few titles") to get official chapter early (say on Friday, and thus eliminating the "need" of scanlated chapters).

But I think maybe paying $5 a month or say a $25 yearly subscription (Outside of Japan) to get chapters on Friday (AKA digital first) would be a smart move, would obliterate the need (and in fact the very existance of ) scanlated WSJ manga since the official release would be pretty much at the same point of the unofficial ones.

Edit: also it would be naive to think this would eliminate piracy all together BUT i think it would diminish it, or at least eliminate the most important factor which is people who read it ahead of time. Like seriously, how many views do you think are from people who read a manga the first hour it releases? The vast majority I would think (Probably 80%, which is what Shueisha is losing to manga piracy )

From my experience so far: not really, aside from some text leaks on 2ch.

For real? Wow I thought there was people in Japan also reading manga chapters... I mean, I don't browse 2ch, but don't they have like threads talking about the newest chapter days in advance or something?

If Japanese people don't really read manga ahead of time then disregard everything I said :/ I thought there was also a portion of Japanese readers that also read scans ahead of the official release, if that's not the case then there's probably not a big motivation for Shueisha to change their model any time soon.

Someone posted Manga Plus’ numbers for the first week since Jaimini’s Box and Mangastream stopped translating Jump series, and all of the series that were typically leaked on Friday had a significant increase in views that week.

I even personally know some people who had no clue that Mangastream wasn’t the official release, and thought they were reading the official releases of every Jump series since Mangastream was a thing

You can’t kill leakers completely. And some ppl will still read the leakers. But I’m sure, even in Japan, if the official chapters of each series were released before the leaks, and apps like manga plus was heavily promoted, a lot of ppl would gravitate towards official since it’ll be easy to access, and they can read it there first

You know they can get in jail if they're caught doing that, right? Or at least heavily punished because of copyright laws. It's just not worth.

I mean, at this point, Mangadex is the only Edited Manga site online, and it has rules against leaked chapters. Not that that stops people from trying.

Don't think that stopped people from downloading torrents to watch the newest Game of Thrones episodes, right?

Mind you, in this example (Game of Thrones) HBO actually has the infrastructure across the globe for its show to be legally watched without delays or anything, and still people pirated it.

Or does Japan enforce those laws heavily or something? I mean I would think it's the same thing as watching the newest GOT episode from a torrent or something.
