Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

If you want a literal version of the original Japanese, just learn frigging Japanese.
Eh, I just want accurate translations. No reason why the "official" has worst translations than fansubs, and it makes no sense why a Japanese character is saying BRUH after every line in a series, also localization doesnt really excuse the stupid line changes that they make 99% of the time

That was meant to replicate the Miya twins Kansai dialects. Having them talk like southerners is actually more accurate to the original Japanese.
This doesn't happen only in Haikyuu but in many of the mangas of the app.

And every southern accent I've in localisation is there instead of a Kansai dialect. Its like the go to.

"Zolo" is the result of some frankly very complicated trademarking decisions from over a decade ago that really can't be walked back on now. It sucks, but you have to live with it.
Sure, but that's only one example. That friend I have post in here from time to time that translates, I had him take a crack at translating some of the dialogue in Samurai 8, since I'm a power levels guy, and I like having distinction.

Turns out, there is no differentiation between moon/planet/star/etc in the Japanese language. Or at the very least, most mangaka use a word that doesn't differentiate between them.

So when you see a translator make distinctions, that's all on their preferences, and isn't present in the original text. Japanese has tons of little things like that.

When the hell was "Bruh" a word that is extremely American to the point of being unfitting? It sounds like the most logical way to translate the casual speak between members of a high-school sports team.

Yeah, that's just ambiguity common in the Japanese language, which translators just have to deal with through context clues. Any pro translator will tell you that.

How does SORRY MY BRUHS, or OH MY BRUHS sound fitting? Its dumb because its just added dialogue that doesnt even need to be there, its not in the fansubs or in the original Japanese, and its not like they rarely use it, they use it every time the character speaks

Here's a little story relevant to this, over in the Visual Novel community, a random romance game has a heroine who speaks in an extremely masculine manner, and for plot reasons doesn't know the protagonists name, meaning she only calls him "Onii-chan". That term though likely carries very different connotations for an English reader concerning the context, so the translator choose to change it to "dude" to get the original intent across.

Said translator ended up getting harassed for days over the decision, simply because it wasn't the original term.

See the point I'm making? These decisions aren't made in a vacuum, they're attempts to across ideas that can't be literally transplanted into English. Arguing the translations are "worse" purely because the translator is doing their jobs correctly is just showing a lack of insight into how this works.

The one issue of censoring from Viz that sticks out for me is something from KnY:
Many fans tend to ignore/forget about it since Inosuke hasn't said anything this disgusting since then.

I can see why Viz changed it, especially if it was to maintain a certain rating, but it just comes across as absolving the character (and Gotouge) of a beyond-disgusting line. Hey, Gotouge, maybe don't have a character use a gross, gendered threat of violence toward one of the few female characters in the cast. They could've easily had him say, "I'll tear your arms off!", "I'll bash your skull in!", etc., which Viz could've gone with as well to avoid the disgusting line, but not have something so generic as "mess you up".

Rant over. :grumble

Does Viz's rating system factor dialogue like that? I know that any R-rated profanities will generally only be in the M rated titles, but I don't know if that kind of dialogue effects the rating.

When talking about localisations of certain terms and etc, it's okay, my little problem it's with these "yer", "wouldja" "couldja", "bruh" and etc, it's just cringe, i'm reading japanese people having a conversation, not some cringe american teenagers, you don't see that in the anime subs, so i don't know why i should see in the manga, but it's not like i can't read with these terms too, it's just that things like "yer" its just ugh...

Eeeeh. I’m usually confused when people complain about translations when they don’t read Japanese. Obviously things feel unnatural when you things like Google Translate. And sometimes when someone who barely speaks the language translates you can tell.

But as someone who doesn’t speak Japanese, nothing feels wrong about Viz’s translation, because it’s not like I’d be able to look at the original text and point out what the translation should be myself.

It's not the translators faults that that's considered casual speak for English-speakers. I'm quite certain your native tongue is no different.

It's the translator's fault to choose putting this terms when they don't have the necessity to do like we can see in the anime subs.

Here at least the series that i have in home, it doesn't have things like "bruh" "yer" and etc, at most really minor stuff, specially because here in Brazil you have too many kind of slangs, accents and different ways to say certain things in each region, so adding certain slangs in a japanese manga wouldn't feel right, because it's just one region of the country that talks "that" way, not most of.

Would've possibly bumped it up to T+ (it's currently just T), but it does seem weird if that alone would cause an issue with the rating.

Which is why I considered that
it was possibly done to avoid the awkwardness of having a beloved character say something like that.

Weird because in the anime Inosuke said the breast thing and i didn't saw any controversy, if anything you would expect the anime to change it in the subs, not the manga that have much less audience and more freedom.

I mean even thought here on Brazil we don't have things, like "bruh" or the others "cringe" slangs, we still have our own story of adapting dialogues.
The Yu Yu Hakusho dub, is example of this. The entire series, was adapted to better suit the brazilian audience. And I believe that this was a great thing, at my view.

Maybe the problem here, is more the terms that the translator chose, don't you think?

Ryunosuke is the type of person who would say "bruh" though (although I do find a lot of their uses of it awkward like I've never heard "bruhs" anywhere but Viz's translation of HaikyuU)

I sure hope people at least wait until Monday Midnight JST before saying Viz/M+ is faster than Japan...

as of 4/5 Weekly Jump is released digitally at 5 am, source, jump+ app

(6/7 was released at midnight, but also on a Saturday... and do I actually have to mention JST and in Japan again? whatever, to stop people assuming and i have to assume people will just assume and left no window for assumptions.)

but every other Shueisha magazines (and basically magazines in general... that actually have a digital version obviously) release at midnight.

One more thing is that it used to release later, 9 am and then 7 am.

so it would not be such a huge jump(heh) to say that the magazine is going to shift to midnight now. especially with the wording that the Mangaplus facebook account used. (search it yourself)

tldr: wait until mon 0000 jst before claiming anything, jump currently is mon 0500 jst, but they might change to mon 000 jst from this point forward.

Didn't say anything about controversy. I've seen many just taken aback by it since he'd never done something like that (and hasn't since).
Some tried to claim that's just his character, but in addition to his character having never done anything like that before or since, Gotouge could've easily had him just use a threat of violence that wasn't gendered (as I said, arm/leg breaking, etc.). Those I've discussed the issue with either say (1) yeah, it was bad, but at least it was a one time thing; (2) oh, I forgot about it, but at least it was a one time thing; or (3) that's just his character (already pointed out the huge flaw in this argument).

I'm just glad the anime subs went with the original.
