Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

What about people former Soviet Union? Why we understand the horror of war but still not act wild at this. People now behave not like victims but like animals on twitter, attacking, insultiong Horikoshi demanding "personal apologyse" like they were the one who suffer the most and have rights to do it.
No one has right to be so angry. If Hori commit suicide what will you do? Will someone answer ? No! Because we live in "victim" generation.
Your comment is flawed in every sentence. There are people who are probably still living today who would've experienced the atrociousness first hand or heard from their parents or grand parents about this.

Horikoshi made a mistake, unintentionally. He simply needs to correct a fucking name. Stop simplifying the issue and providing pathetic and illogical conclusions to how this will end.

It's just Twitter criticism but Shueisha didn't give a fuck about Yuuna thing. Still, this is just dumb, from both sides. Horikoshi made an error that can be seen as something bad and that wouldn't hurt to be corrected in order to avoid drama, people ask about it, some others overreact about the topic as how it happens with any controversy, and then people come up saying people can't feel bad about something because it doesn't affect them, well shit guess I can't feel bad and complain about sexism because I'm not a woman, fuck empathy. It's not bad to call out something that can be corrected, but it's worse to only pay attention to people who only use these situations to throw hate instead of attending people who politely ask about this stuff. It was big enough to have an official answer and no, it won't personally affect Horikoshi nor the franchise because we all know this will die in 1 day and the whole thing will remain as a Trivia thing in HeroAca's wiki, just like Whitebeard's Nazi Flag on its time.

Either that or Shueisha preemptively stopped the flame before it got huge. As I said, the Korean-Japanese relationship is so tense still that anything small can cause a huge diplomatic nightmare especially anything that reminds of the Japanese war..
I don't think the relations are so tense that some manga character is gonna cause a diplomatic crisis.

They probably just want to avoid tainting the manga with things that could make part of the audience umcorfotable, since HeroAca is popular internationally and all.

Just like when they changed Whitebeard's flag in OP.

Switching the topic away from arguments about controversy

how long does everyone think it'll take until we get a new hit romcom, and a new hit sports manga?

By the sound of it Yuuna's likely to end pretty soon with WNL probably not too far behind it (unless it decides to do a college arc), while on the sports side we've only got Haikyuu left which it feels like it's in the big final match celebrating all the best characters and moments.

I think we'll see a new romcom do well in the second half of the year (probably about the same time WNL ends doing well partly due to good timing) but I get the feeling they might struggle to get a new sports series to do well. Kuroko, Haikyuu, Soma, and Hinomaru pretty much covered all the bases as far as types of sports series go, so every new sports series in WSJ will have something it'll be directly compared to (and hence not be able to capture that unique/fresh idea feeling).

Maybe if we get a genuine superpower thing it could stand out. As in people with actual powers using them for sports like Mitama just did, not Kuroko-esque just superhumanly good at sports. That or something made-up (like Keijo!!!!!!!!), or something very obscure in Japan or that's just never been tried in the magazine before.

Before taking that my comment is flaw, make sure you dont talk with person those ancestors suffer in war. You suggest that maybe i didnt heard from my granny hiw they survive during war! Very good man. Now can you contact with russian fandom and say that we are flaws, because we are not support attack on Horikoshi..
You an also mentioned that none of us experience suffers of granparents in WW2. Look at history books first. We understand why Korean people angry, but we will never support that attack..Its horrible

There was a controversy from a member of BTS who wore a tshirt which angered Japanese people because they believe it has anti-Japanese sentiments. They cancelled all appearances from Kpop groups and people from Japan demanded apology from the band. All because of a tshirt which the member claims did not know has that meaning... So yeah, it is tense, even something as small as this can trigger stuff...

Not sure if this was a scripted apology from Jump or Horikoshi really meant to name him in the literal sense, (Maruta also meaning round & fat)..... But then there's the Kanji, so.... (I'm still leaning on it being intentional, people just ended up misunderstanding it)

speaking of the banner, what do you guys think of the 7 new mc's that have been added?
I love Mashle the most, but that's me and my tendency to like dumb and dense MCs. Mitama is funny though right now I like Rena more lol. Taiyou and Kaname are good boys. No formed opinion about Chris nor Fafner. Don't like Andy.

I just saw now but 7 manga on the magazine are complete newbies. I don't remember a time where we had so many at the same time. lol
I wonder when we will have more than a single manga sticking around from a serialization round. This has gone for over a year.

Poor Zipman. It comes in last in both our poll and the Japanese poll, and there's little faith in it's survival despite there being only 8 chapters. What happened?
Zipman can be summed in lack of development and too fast story.

So that resolves that.
I'm glad they made the right decision.

How many times have we even had more than one series from the same batch stick around? I think it only happened twice in the past decade (Yuuna and Kimetsu, then Dr Stone and WNL, though as a batch of 6 that's a special case).

Yeah, it's a rare thing but some of the established series near the end of their serialization which will leave even more open spots. With 7 series not being established, it creates a certain imbalance in the magazine so more series need to stick around.

Horikoshi typically gives his characters names that are very direct and relate to either their physical appearance or role in the story.

I can understand why Chinese and Korean people are offended. I feel like it’s not my place to say they shouldn’t be offended, and Shuiesha and Horikoshi changing the name was all and all the right thing to do.

However, at the same time I’m 100% sure Horikoshi meant no harm and didn’t mean to offend anyone. I’m sure he was trying to name the character after something that’s as horrible as the things this character does within the story. So I think twitter’s reaction and attacking Horikoshi as if he’s racist, and did it out of malicious intent is overboard. Obviously it was a poor decision, but ppl screw up sometimes. There are some people who aren’t even accepting the apology and name change with a “Well, he should have never did it in the first place” POV.

Probably next batch so they can have some chapters on their back for when those series actually do end.

What do you mean unintentionally? That he didnt know background of the name? Counting who is character is it is impossible that this is coincidence. Most likely Kohei hinted that villain is going to get taste of his own medicine in the future bit it would be better if he didnt. Than again some much more radical things exist in this field. Like some time ago there was scandal about ranobe about japanese soldier who called a hero just because he killed 100 men or something like this.

I'm glad the controversy is resolved but I didn't know the word Maruta meant Logs which the Japanese used to refer the human experiments in ww2. It's interesting because this reminded me of something from the Mitsuki oneshot by Kishimoto. There's character in the oneshot literally called "log" and he's one of Orochimaru's experiments. Interesting how that didn't cause a controversy like this one because Orochimaru was painted in a positive light there.

That he didn't intentionally mean to hurt anyone by the use of the name. That's what I meant.

I get that usually its white people being offended on behalf of others but this time it seems Korean and Chinese readers were in fact offended.

You're not Korean or Chinese.
You dont get a say in it it its offensive or not. Simple.
That's just being racist. You get a say if you're educated in the subject, which he is not. That is the bottom line.
