Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I want to be worried about Mitama but i cant just stop being super happy at Yozakura for being able to hold the positions so good, is truly doing better than averybody thought :super

Mitama isnt in danger, first gag mangas are known for not selling like the other series and still doing better than all other newbies and Jump is promoting the series a lot, which means they want ro keep going

We aren't talking about anime, which even so, China still is larger than the west together. The manga distribution is completely different compared to anime, which if we got by Kodansha's numbers, Japan is the largest by far with US and China coming with a much smaller number. Which I doubt it's much different from other companies.

北米がもっとも高く全体の25%。
次いで僅差でフランスが22%、そして韓国が15%、ドイツが8%、中国は6%という感じで続きます。

North America is the highest, accounting for 25% of the total.
This is followed closely by France at 22%, Korea at 15%, Germany at 8% and China at 6%

Why do people constantly overestimate's China's actual hold on the Japanese industry?

On a related note, turns out the whole Morey fiasco 4 months back barely dented the NBA's profits. Yes, they still lost hundreds of millions, but that's actual peanuts when you realize the NBA was set to make dozens of billions. When you calculate the numbers, turns out the loss was only 3% of what the NBA was set to make if the incident didn't happen.

There's also some caveats involved, but that's going to go off the rails in this thread.

This raises the very valid question of if "the Chinese market" is actually a real thing or just a defense to justify getting maximum profits even if it's basically blood money, but let's not get political here. Lord knows we've gotten political enough.

It's a typical pitfall where businesses end up thinking more about their short-term interests instead of seeing the bigger picture. The basic law of doing business is to maximize profit. Which is fair enough, but this often leads to panicking over losing any bit of money.

MHA fanbase looking at the kimetsu phenom
I'm pretty sure most series fans feel that way, :3c
But it is funny how the tables turned so swiftly within a few years that this is nothing but a lightning in a bottle effect that doesn't really say anything for Jump series as a whole and more so how the sequence of events led to it happening.

Series has a low key but very loyal fandom -> Gets recommended by a popular artist -> Gets recommended by a popular writer -> Thus popular writer is in affiliation with a highly prolific studio -> Studio announces that they'll be adapting it -> Anime premieres to acclaim and manga sales pick up -> One episodes reaches the masses and people start picking up the manga in drones as a result -> Manga sales continues to increase due to demand which in turns makes it the best selling manga series in Japan beating current juggernaut One Piece -> People see that this manga is good enough that it beat OP and start to seek it out even more
These sort of things rarely happen so it shouldn't really bother anyone, ironically enough it was Kimetsu's lowkey status initially that made it grasp a wider audience in the long run.

The thing about the Chinese market is that it only really benefits poorly performing series that's why in every case you see of a series that flopped initially in Japan still getting a second season due to "stream numbers" its always because bilibili is apart of the committee. The AssClass anime is a perfect example of this, despite the manga's popularity the anime did fairly poorly in comparison however its stream numbers were massive overseas particularity in China where ironically enough it got banned. The producer was quick to note that the only reason it ever got a second season to begin with was because of how it performed overseas. People are just way too dependent on this "China will save it" mentality without considering exactly how much money is actually given back to investors they just see a "big number" and automatically assume that the profit margins we be the same but its largely the opposite.

I honestly do not understand the comparison, My Hero is still one of the most successful series of recent years, Kimetsu instead was one of those surprises that happen once every thousand years ....
Uhhh that's not even remotely true. HxH, One Piece, Prince of Tennis, Naruto, Bleach, Death Note all happened within years of each other. Throw in Gintama also if you want to since what it did for a comedy series is unprecedented.

If you go further back, Slam Dunk, Kenshin, YYH etc also happened with less years between them. The huge gap for jump to find the "next big thing" is after Death Note to Kimetsu although they did have stuff like HQ, Kuroko and AC selling a million a volume in between.

It's ok dude. I know you've been upset and going in every forum claiming MHA being taken off in China isn't a big deal but let's not pretend they're not a big market. The fact that Shuiesha apologized and are now changing the name in the volume version shows they really care. I know people like to bring AoT as an example but that was in 2013. Back then China wasn't seen as a lucrative market because of piracy still being big. Things are different now though.

It was an exaggeration to underline the success of DS, it should not be taken literally.

That and I think Mitama's first chapters aren't it's best, so word of mouth doesn't spread as much I guess? Also in my opinion it's cover art is pretty lackluster compared to Yozakura's

Yeah, like this was useful to change China's mind.

Really nice to wake up to Yozakura’s position hardly dropping, feel bad for Mitama though.

Out of the titles you mentioned only YYH, Slam Dunk, One Piece

Not even Rurouni Kenshin or HxH or... heck, even Naruto were on the level KnY is on right now (40million with 19 volumes which would put it slightly higher than 2mill pee volume, and even though the 40 million figure was probably across everything KnY related -aka the novels and other books- it will get to 2 million sold per volume.

KnY is pretty much unprecedented in how it exploded like this, sure we have the Dr.Slump example of the boost from when it got the anime, and also the One Piece 2011 boost, but it also isn't comparable because even though it got a huge boost.. it just wasn't KnY 15x levels of boost. (I'm guessing it sold around 100,000-120,000 pre-anime? And now it's at almost 2mill, so a 15x boost in sales basically out of nowhere.)

I wish we had sale data for Yu Yu Hakusho because I think it's pretty similar

Also Gintama isn't the first comedy to sell that good, Dr.Slump and Kochikame (in its prime, because it must have sold like hot cake back then to achieve the sales it has today. ) probably sold more than Gintama ever did per volume.

.........................

I think a lot of people is just looking at total KnY sales (currently 40 million as of Feb 7th 2020) and those are impressive BUT when you realize that it achieved 2 million sales per volume right now (not years after it finished, thus selling millions in backlog thru the years, like most other manga data we have) that's way way waaaay more impressive because as I said it puts it higher than series like HxH and Naruto in per volume sales, in fact only DB, OP and Slam Dunk beat KnY in per volume sales. Maybe YYH slightly beat KnY sales too.

Now, what do Slam Dunk, Yu Yu hakusho and Dragon Ball all have in common? They all are from WSJ's golden age.
One Piece is an outlier, the best selling manga in history.

So KnY is selling at those levels (Lower than OP, DB and SD, higher-ish than YYH).

I've been observing the boost for kny since the anime aired and ever since it ended, the boost hasn't slowed down a bit (stock issues not included). In a weeks or two, it'll cross 2M for sure so now this begs the question if kny can break OP's 4M volume print record.
