Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I'm currently reading Act-Age, Mitama and Zipman (also Blue Flag and Spy x Family but those belong to Jump Plus, so...). Doesn't sound like much at first, but I also watch the animes of Haikyuu and MHA, so I've got plenty. I don't think I'd want to keep up with every series just for the sake of being up to date. I just read (watch) what I like and that's it. Also, I read non-Jump mangas as well (and I'm probably not the only one), so I wouldn't even have the time to read everything.

Honestly, I think I feel a similar way to Rain, if I understand correctly. IMO, if a manga doesn't immediately grab attention with it's first volume, then it'll almost definitely get axed. Often times, this comes down to the very first (or first couple of) chapter(s). It does feel pointless tracking sales after the first volume, or even the first week (if you have a good idea of the standards of Jump and how previous series have performed). And I think it's somewhat true with all magazines.

Still, though. I think tracking the subsequent volume released may have some merit to get a good idea of the sales trajectory. It's possible that a series that didnt sell too well with its first volume could gain a sudden surge of popularity and maybe stop the axe from coming. Likewise, a new series could start off well but then gradually decline out the gate (which I think is common for veterans who return to the magazine).

Let's ask a question, can you guys think of really "striking" first chapter for a series which died? Like, not one you liked, one you can say genuinely left an impact.

I mean.., that's true. But it's sometimes interesting to track sales, like watching Kimetsu's growth. If I time traveled back to 2016 and told everyone that Kimetsu would be a monster hit at the decade's end, no one would believe me.

Currently read everything in the magazine, mostly due in part thanks to the SJ app being a thing. Before it came around, I read OP, HxH, MHA, BC, TPN, Dr. Stone, and Kimetsu. Once it came out, I gradually caught up with the remaining series by around Spring, with the exception being Yuuna which I only caught up with last September. With maybe the exceptions of Haikyuu, JJK, and maybe CSM and AA, idk when I would've decided to read the remaining series. The app is just that convenient. Now reading the entire mag on Sunday has become a fun little tradition.

I think you're memory is self-correcting itself a bit with Golem Hearts. Chapter 1 was...the heroes stopping some random thugs. The actual story didn't start until Chapter 2.

If anything, that was part of the problem.

Whenever the dad died. If that wasn't ch 1 then I retract that answer.
It's weird how Samurai 8 did nearly the exact same thing in very specific ways that can't be reduced to tropes and nobody cares to bring up Golem Hearts.

It wasn't. And he didn't die. He was impaled but recovered.

KNY's sales looks more massive in perspective because of how much it sold before the anime while most other series were already selling quite well before the anime.
KnY's success reminds me of Magi's success but obviously to a greater extent. Both series were hardly selling much at the start and now both titles have became massive hits of all time for their respective magazine.

Despite the overly mediocre reception, I really saw something in Beast Children's first chapter. You could really feel the author's passion for the sport and the premise was nice. If Chapters 1 and 2 were merged together, it might have been better received. The Last Saiyuki gets an honorable mention as well, especially for being a flop that I appreciated more and more with every chapter later into it's run.

Also, this is a much older example, but Cross Manage's first chapter (and the forty-two or so following it) were just brilliant! KAITO's writing was a lot rougher back then, but it really deserved to live longer.

???????? You don't read any? Not one?
Nope. I haven't touched any WSJ series since July (probably) aside from some newbie chapters to see what the quality was like.

Prior to then, I used to read One Piece, MHA, was behind on JK, TPN, Dr. Stone, and KNY but I did read those whenever I got some time. Read a bit of CSM and S8 as well. HQ has been on hold for a long time for me. WNL, Yuuna were never my kind of manga. And never got into BC (tried few chapters and even the first episode of the anime. Couldn't get into it).
Always wanted to try Act Age but didn't get the time.

I might follow Mashle now tho. Since I'm REALLY digging the comedy.

Again, irrespective of how Hori names his characters or how the japanese word of the name itself was supposed to mean, the translations of this word means something else.
There's been numerous translations of the name since it doesn't directly pertain to that incident to begin with.

Casual fans wouldn't really dive deep into such stuff and need to be spoon fed. I get what you're saying about the name but you can't just ignore the fact that a lot of fans need to be spoon fed especially when the demographic being aimed for are children and teens.
That name is entirely commonplace in Japan and Hori's naming conventions has never needed a disclaimer in fact Japanese readers were able to get what the intent was for the name from the get go but got hounded for being "for not being able to understand because they weren't Korean/Chinese". It was obviously a very complicated situation.

That being said just because some fans chose to resort to such stupid means does not mean the actual criticism in itself (in a controlled and mature manner) isn't required either.
That's fair but I would have liked more moderation on the topic if people were generally hurt by the usage of the word and trying to distance themselves from those using it as an excuse to harass and send death threats to the author and that's the main reason why people don't seem to care about their plight over Hori's unintentional usage of word and its history because they just see a bunch of hysterics harassing an author over a word.

28% of China's population are aged between 0-24. While that's not a big percentage, when you account for the actual number which is 323million people that falls into this demographic, it becomes an unprecedented POTENTIAL market.

Shueisha or any industry would be stupid to not take advantage of that size of a market.
Potential is the key word there that doesn't mean they're going to start making manga or anime meant to cater specifically for the Chinese audience, there would be a sizable backlash towards it. Most of the revenue anime makes is always going to come from Japan since the foreign cost is disproportionate towards it.

Respecting and following each country's / region's demands and policies is something that is happening in every industry around the world. This isn't something new.
If the manga industry wants to expand there, its a simple fact that they need to follow and censor as required.
And then you wind up with situations like Attack On Titan where the author refused to compromise their integrity and it wind up effecting nobody since China missed out on the biggest anime of the last decade due to their own polices. Its not particularly cut and dry nor is it detrimental to skimp out on a market share, part of the reason Hollywood is so compliant is because so many of their movies are overbudgeted and sometimes when they have so little faith in a film they need to depend on the foreign market.

So the video basically confirms a theory I had that JUMP mostly focuses on rookies or creators that have previously published on jump. Nice video, though the actual interview being shown would have been nice.

Imagine a character literally named Steelsteel Steelsteel, if I get that correctly. Yeah, Hori’s names are quite something. xD

Yeah, while Kimetsu is a phenomenon in Japan, it’s still only so in Japan. Now, it’s only just broken into the mainstream worldwide, and I think Kimetsu can reach HeroAca’s worldwide presence soon, but it needs to continue being talked about like HeroAca has with its seasonal anime structure. It’s my biggest problem with adapting the next arc as a movie, cause it might leave people out of future adaptations if they haven’t watched the movie.
Problem is, Kimetsu's already entered the endgame, and it's not likely to be extended past this half year. The way I see it, Kimetsu's popularity will wind down in the next 1-2 years or so, which is when the anime adaptation probably ends. That said, it will still go down as part of Jump's "Twin Pillars" alongside Heroaca in the 2010s.
