Eh, I guess that's an interesting question. Which series do you feel have the best paneling in Jump? Not the art (although it's hard to completely separate the two), but the paneling itself.

For me, I mentioned Haikyuu already, and I would agree Chainsawman is a close second. I don't know who would complete an hypothetical top3, though. I think Neverland's amazing at times, but Posuka falters in some small moments (maybe because she's not that used to manga? It got better as the series went on, imo) while she does great on the big scenes. We talked too much about One Piece already, which is also inconsistent but I do feel it's on a high tier

Hmm...this is interesting.

I'm learning a lot about paneling from this conversation. I never knew what makes paneling in a story good or not, so seeing examples of what good paneling and bad paneling are is especially nice!

I'm not sure. I'll need to read up some more and pay attention.

CSM has experimental paneling, for lack of a better term. There's panels where there's a 3D effect (back with one of Aki's fights, IIRC) where it seems like there was a devil outside the panels.

Also, there was an instance a few chapters ago where we were looking in through a window, and the window itself was supposed to be the panels, IIRC.

I do think that's really nice, but Fujimoto is specially great at small moments, imo. There's nothing particularly different about, say, the movie chapter, but that one had some striking pages throughout (a lot of chapters do, but that specifically stuck with me afterwards).

I really don't like Oda's current panelling. He adds a ton of unnecessary information/character reactions and leaves the most important moments with panels smaller than they should be and that add nothing to the impact of events. He crams too much when there should be less. The last chapter was a perfect example of that. Old OP panelling used to be more creative and packed a lot of emotional punch while now it's just a very inconsistent square/rectangular fest.

HQ, MHA and CSM are my top 3 with the best panelling. JJK gets an honorable mention from me.

Good paneling is all about focus. You know the series has good paneling when what's important is in full view and what isn't stays in the background, so everything flows properly and the reader is able to understand everything he needs to without getting a headache.

Now, you want an example of BAD paneling? Look no further than tokyo ghoul (especially re), cause I swear to god some of the action sequences were an ungodly clusterfuck.

My Hero Academia for me. Horikoshi paneling is amazing.

I think it's more about carrying emotional weight behind the imagery presented in a way that attaches the reader to the work. Inio Asano for example chooses to make a good number double spreads with little/no dialogue, but they carry the vast emotion of the story through the impact and sell what's happening in detail.

Which is the fundamental issue with Oda's post-time skip paneling, his work loses all impact because he's more interested in stuffing the pages full of shit which adds nothing purely because he can't get through everything otherwise. Even what'd be fantastic images otherwise are directly hindered by his insistence on including reactions and irrelevant details.

Less is more, basically.

Just read any of Togashi’s works for examples of great paneling
Yup. A lot of people make fun of HxH for some its wordy pages, but in terms of form and connection Togashi's spreads a second to none.

I fully agree with what you say on Asano (clearly). But what you said doesn't really contradict what I said. Good paneling can be conveyed in a different number of ways, but "focus" is what is important: What do I want to convey? What is the emotion I'm trying to bring up in the reader? Am i trying to give them an explanation, am I trying to incite a strong emotional reaction, do I want to show them a particular side of a character?

If the author has a clear idea of what he's going for, then his panels will work in a certain direction, and the scene that is important gets the amount of space it needs because he knows what he's doing with it.
Your Oden example is correct. That's bad paneling. There are too many unimportant things taking space, and what is important is hidden. There is no focus.

Basically: paneling is good when the space of a panel is directly proportional to how important that panel is. If an important panel is small, you messed up. If unimportant panels are taking a lot of space, you messed up.

Here's a question, does anyone think the recent Jump debuts have good paneling or no?

I really like discussing this subject.

I didn't really paid that much attention and I'm going off the top of my head, so my opinion is not fully-formed here:

GOTW is competent, if unspectacular, UxU is kinda messy at times and Mashle is... actually pretty good? Didn't think much about it before, but I feel like there's a good build up for the spreads, and there's a certain cleanliness that works well with the blunt tone of the humour and its main character.

Among the newbies, Mashle is pretty good. Clear, good layouts and nothing over the top. But the mangaka isn't really trying anything new with paneling in that either tho. Not that I think he should, his paneling works well for the comedy genre.
I remember thinking GOTW was ok. I felt it could've been better in that regards.

This isn't technically new tho. Many do this. Its just a clever way to make use of panels and really drive the immersive aspect of the panel.

Also, regarding BLEACH;
This was something I wish someone would've asked Kubo at some point - He never really drew characters out of panels. In the entire series, there was one instance of a character's leg being outside a panel and that was it. Kubo only resorted to writing words and effects outside the panel.

It's strange because for his previous work, he did draw characters that overlapped panels. I wonder if there was any reason why he resorted to not doing it when he obviously could've.

CSM has amazing paneling and Haikyuu too from what I've seen.

HxH is amazing too. I love this example the most and HxH benefited with it's more detailed art work since the start of the Dark Continent arc.

If we are talking like whole Jump I would probably give it to Akira Toriyama or Takehiko Inoue because I loved the way they portrayed action, you can feel the flow of the seconds or milliseconds passing thru how the characters move... In Toriyama's case, this was lots of times at the expense of having backgrounds (He said on interviews that the first thing he would make characters do in a fight would be to destroy the backgrounds so he wouldn't have to draw buildings or stuff like that).

BUT then we have Takehiko Inoue I mean just looking at his art leaves me flabbergasted most times, but I cannot believe some of the chapters of Slam Dunk were done weekly like I understand how Toriyama did it (He destroyed backgrounds so as to speed the drawing process) but Inoue makes great art that also conveys the flow of the milliseconds since the last panel AND beautiful, realistic backgrounds. I guess backgrounds would have been drawn by his staff, but still it's just amazing. The penultimate chapter of Slam Dunk pretty much encapsulates everything written here, it's a beautiful chapter with (almost) no dialogue in it, and still, you feel super excited (I remember my heart beating like crazy when I read it).

I guess action manga (like sports manga or fighting manga) would have the edge over other genres like romance, comedy or psychological manga on the "paneling" category because action is cool to look at, but here are some non-action manga I'd like to mention too.

Takeshi Obata in Hikaru no Go, he's good in Death Note too... But the thing is Death Note.. Is kinda "Stiff", like there's not much action in it so Obata's strengths aren't fully displayed there most of the times, but in Hikaru No Go there are some god-tier panels, 3 in particular that I remember to this day When Hikaru tells Sai the play that would have beaten Toya Meiji, the other is when Sai leaves, and the last is the sequence where Sai gives hikaru his fan.

Pre-Dragon Ball in Dr.Slump his goofy almost cartoonish style was very funny, super fitting for Dr.Slump.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Also, I know we aren't discussing worst paneling but for me it was D-Gray Man, I stopped reading it because I didn't understand the action sequences most of the times...

Outside Jump for some reason I LOVE the way Yowamushi Pedal is drawn.. So rough, sketchy, almost "dirty" looking panels. It's an acquired taste haha, that's for sure.

Edit: I just remembered Jojo, there are some bizarre panel layouts, obviously fitting for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure lol.

I liked TPN paneling back in the Grace Field arc, but I'm not sure if it keeps being good during the fight sequences since I stopped reading it during Goldy Pond.
Also, I just remembered one of the things that bothers me the most in Zipman: every page has a impact scene. And since I don't care about the characters, I just feel tired after some pages.
If we are talking about series which are no longer on WSJ, I think World Trigger has a great panelling.
