It depends on the mangaka. Some thrive with editor input (Kishi) while others thrive without it (Fujimoto).
It actually tells the same story. First days/two weeks of each volume are not bad, but then they suddenly drop like crazy. And that's what we would need to see in the following weeks, whether those numbers hold or end up dropping again.

Seems about right to me? Comparing shoseki to shoseki volume 3 and 4 are indeed doing worse than 1 and 2, but 3 and 4 seem to be about the same (volume 3 is like almost 10k in 2 days/ almost 19k in 9 days, volume 4 is 14k in 5 days).

At this point, do we still know whether or not the editors had an influence on S8?
Is Rin-san leaving Fujimoto on a long leash confirmed by interviews or something? I can definitely see that (mainly cuz Fujimoto is a good writer with a strong, consistent vision and Rin has great instincts) but I would love to read some background sources on that relationship.
It was stated that S8 was handed off to a newbie editor. You think a newbie editor is going to tell Kishi what to do?
It was stated prior to CSM serializing that the "top brass" (or was it big wig?) in WSJ literally told Fujimoto to do whatever he wanted.
Usually they do but there are exceptions, you never know.
S8 has been in the works for multiple years. You don't think that Nakano and other senior editors would have had meeting(s) with Kishi reviewing how the story is going and discussing ideas? Especially considering the potential S8 had from a sales perspective (something they very clearly believed from the first volume prints)
I seriously doubt it. Look at the series itself. Does it scream committee approved to you?
Yeah, that's more or less what I mean. There undoubtedly was meetings with Kishi where ideas were discussed, but I'm assuming there was little pushback and they all just turned into yes men in regards to his ideas.
admittedly I dropped it a while back so idk if something changed but my main issue was how info-dump heavy it was which can be seen in other Jump series like Last Saiyuki so in the story itself I don't see anything that seems like it couldn't have been approved by the editorial staff for any other mangaka.
This is a common practice though, newbie editors get veteran authors.
