Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

WSJ keeps attempting to run shogi aka japanese chess, and all of them have been flops.

Meh, I don’t think this thread in particular was too bad. Though the people talking about how One Piece is destroying everything in its path are in for an extremely rude awakening next month...

Also, I wonder if the sales graphic could show how much the new volumes sold each week, then have a total volumes sold in the bottom. Otherwise people might not realize that these are cumulative and get confused about how much they’re selling on a week by week basis. Just a suggestion, though.

Yeah, people keep getting confused with that so I'll have to make some changes, probably will implement something like you said from next month onwards. Even if I can still explain to them how it works, they still keep adding numbers for some reason, but given they have 0 knowledge on the matter I can't really blame them totally.

Alright. I really do appreciate the fact that you make these, by the way! I'd really like to have more informed topics on Jump stuff outside of this forum, and this (along with the account in general) really does help!

to be honest, i think if circumstances were normal Undead Unluck would've been like 20k, YF around 17k, and Agravity around 13k

Does anyone have volume numbers for Act-age (and other stuff?).

Yozakura seems to have not grown very much (even taking into account the situation) and I'm curious how it compares to successful series which started out selling fairly low.

You can find a lot of useful charts here (they're also usually posted on this forum): https://twitter.com/TwtOtaku_My

As for ACT-AGE, here's the most recent chart I could find:

Volume 4 was around the time Shueisha started a sizable advertisement campaign for the series in bookstores in addition to a recommendation on the wrap-around from Yusei Matsui (Assassination Classroom).

Topic idea since there's no magazine this week, which newbie flop author from the past couple years has the most potential to have their next series be a hit?

Not just your favourite flops, rather which authors do you think will do well with more experience and the right idea? out of

Ryoji Hirano is an obvious one, but he's off doing a Fate manga, so not much point to wanting him back.

Gonna have to go with Higuma's author Natsuki Hokami. The series despite being quite generic and underdeveloped showed a lot of potential, and I think if Hanae tried he could genuinely succeed.

Yuushin Kuroki (Teenage Renaissance! David) is on a promising track. David really won people over after the first few mediocre chapters, and people seemed to really enjoy his... more risqué drawings. I can easily see him coming back to write Jump's next popular ecchi manga after Yuuna ends.

I can also see Kento Matsuura (Tokyo Shinobi Squad artist) starting a series with Tougo Kotou soon since they recently did another one-shot together. I'm honestly surprised that Matsuura didn't debut with Kotou in the first place. His art is already very polished and has room to get even better.

Finally, not a lot of people really cared about Beast Children, but I think that Kento Terasaka can do a lot better with a second go. The series was pretty rough overall, but clearly had a lot of passion put into it. While the art noticeably degraded toward the end of the series, he was experimenting with a lot of cool perspectives and layouts that could totally work with more experience!

I definitely think Higuma's author could do well with another go, I liked a lot of what he did in that short run, but maybe some things could've been more exciting or attention grabbing.

I didn't read it at the time, but I think Saiyuki's author can come back strong(er).

And Fukuda if he does something he enjoys and has planned out more.

Natsuki Hokami, not Hanae. Natsuki Hanae is Tanjiro's VA.

U19 is my favorite flop of all time. The battles felt like they had potential, with the abilities slightly more creative than BNHA or Black Clover, say. It seemed to be going the direction of JoJo and Undead in terms of battles. Furthermore, the cast was very natural-feeling and organic, and the overall conflicts gave you an underground vibe, almost like Persona. The kids vs adults theme had a lot of potential and the underdog role(s) was already set up so well in a lot of ways, which is super important for a large proportion of shonen.

If anyone knows "why it flopped" I'd actually love to know. I'm so sad that the author deleted all his accounts and stuff. I would take U19 over all the new series from 2020 besides Mitama, aka axe them all for U19.

Gonna reread it now...
