They couldn't kill of Tanjiro because of marketing, but i believe Haru-chan wanted to kill him off but VIZ put a stop to that.
If they killed the MC off they couldn't make movies, spin-off series, KnY 2, games, and toys but with him alive they can continue to milk this cow until pigs start flying.
