Whether Gotouge can strike the gold with another series as successful as the last remains to be seen. Not to sound fully doubtful.

Some can do it like Matsui with Majin Tantei Neuro Nogami and Assassination Classroom. Then we had Fujimaki do so well with Koruko only to drop the ball with Robot x Laserbeam afterwards. A better example is how Kawashita did so well with Ichigo 100% only for her subsequent series like Hatsukoi Limited and Anedoki to fail to live up to her last success.

Predicting how someone can do with their next series is like lottery.

Robot x Laserbeam did amazingly at first, v1 is one of the best selling first volumes the past decade (top 3 maybe? I'm not sure). It just couldn't keep it going at that level and dropping sales after v1 is a death sentence in WSJ, even if the series still selling significantly better than newer stuff.

I feel like RxL would probably still be ongoing now if it was in Sunday or Magazine, since they very strongly favour veteran creators (and seem to be better places for sports manga too).

Somehow whenever Horikoshi draws another Jump character, it always works
I'd say that speaks to the "versatility" of his style, I guess?
Long before the massive Kimetsu popularity boom, I thought that after Kimetsu ended, Gotouge would go on to create a very popular SOL/character drama series since they're pretty good at characterization. I don't think they'll create something that surpasses the sheer scale of Kimetsu's popularity anymore, but I would love to see them write a story like that.
Like I mentioned before, that Fate tribute art a while ago makes me think a Western Fantasy might be more suited to Gotouge's style.

But also there's a certain peculiarity for most manga artist I would assume, they actively looked into getting into the manga industry, an industry that's well known for it's high highs, but also low lows (As in a lot of mangaka never really having successful series and having to work part time, stuff like that).

I'd venture to say that most manga artists are creationist, they have a passion for the medium. I doubt Gotouge has lost that interest, is something that certain people have for life, maybe Gotouge will indeed take a vacation but I fully expect his/her new serialization within 1-2 years.

For example Yoshihiro Togashi (Hunter x Hunter mangaka) pretty much had the perfect opportunity to end HxH in the last arc, but decided to continue it, he doesn't really need money (He didn't need money after YYH), and he ended YYH when he wanted to, and he has terrible back pains.. so I can only assume Togashi's passion for his trade overcomes all.. Perhaps only surpassed by the newest DQ being released lol

Gotouge might be different, but I do not know of many mangaka that reached these heights and simply retired because mangakas are modern troubadours, people that actively entered an industry that's known for being super harsh and not really a high paying field.
You probably know of the super successful mangakas, but how many of you have heard of the guy that debuted in (insert magazine) and failed, and then tried again and failed again while doing part time jobs so he/she could pay rent..
Yeah, survivorship bias is a scary thing that we shouldn't overlook.

Worst time line Gotouge goes full Toriyama and releases one volume manga in WSJ whenever he/she feels like.
I agree that they’ll most likely return with something else. The person I was replying to said “they’d be stupid not to return after having a huge hit”.

I’m simply stating that should they choose to retire, it would not be stupid of them.
Will Gotouge retire? Probably not. Would they be stupid if they decided to retire? No

I feel bad for Kawashita, literally being a one hit wonder and all...Lilim Kiss and Anedoki did not deserve to get killed like that. But wasn't Anedoki a modest success in terms of sales? What was with that axe?

I feel like if Gotouge comes back with another series at Jump, they may follow the path of Obata and Ohba with Death Note and Bakuman, the first series will be a massive hit while the second will be a success in its own right but wont be at its predecessor's level

Sales numbers themselves really don't seem all that important to WSJ, what matters is growth and weekly popularity. They'd be more likely to keep a series that sells 10k volume 1 then 15k v2 and gets lots of favourite votes every week, than a series that sells 30k v1 then 25k v2 and rarely gets weekly toc votes.

Just look at Samurai 8, it was still selling better at the end than any of the new series, but it was always bottom of the ToC and volume sales dropped a little each time so it got cancelled.

Anedoki if I recall ran almost as much as Hatsukoi Limited, except that one would be 28 chapters compared to the former's 33. Hatsukoi was lucky to be picked for a 12 episode anime, which is rare for any Jump manga that only has less than a year worth of material to adapt.

Some other smaller series like Umagadouki Zoo wish it were that fortunate.

That would just mean the only thing she/he cares is about money, not writing stories, Gotouge didn't published a series for 7~10 years, only 4 and he/she never looked tired or drained at all, Toriyama and Rumiko both released Dragon Ball and Ranma 1/2 in the same year that Dr. Slump and Urusei Yatsura ended, Gotouge can rest for like a year but it would be kinda dumb to not ride in the insane popularity he/she got and release a new series soon.
I highly doubt they’ll retire; however if they chose to retire, the manga industry is extremely demanding. Someone only wanting to do one series and being out doesn’t necessarily mean they’re only in it for the money(and even if they were only in it for the money, big whoop, that’s their business. Plus, someone who only entered the industry for money is probably the one that wouldn’t retire after one series).

Retirement doesn’t mean they’d never do work again. Gotouge could do character design for video games and tv anime, which is still well paying work and significantly less demanding than starting another 4+ year manga series.

Tite Kubo stated that Burn The Witch was a personal project for himself that he never planned on releasing, until his editor pushed him. Hell, this isn’t the same scenario, since it’s the film industry, and this guy has multiple hit.; but once George Lucas retired he continued making short films privately, with no intention of ever releasing them. They’re just for himself because he loves creating.

Someone can be passionate with what they do and retire simply because they don’t want to deal with the pressures that come with having a successful series, now that they’ve finally experienced what it’s like, and now they have the comfortability to just never work and create freely without pressure

I’m sure Gotouge will return, I’m simply saying that retiring after having a huge hit isn’t “dumb af”.

I'm just thinking that some authors have the one story they really love and want to tell, but they don't feel the same motivation and love for anything else once that story is complete.

Everyone's different, some mangaka love the job no matter what they're drawing and would make 100 different manga if they had enough time, while others have one hit then do nothing else except maybe a sequel years later.

I hope Gotouge's got other ideas of course, but you never know what people are like until they tell you.

Then how would you explain a series like Yuuna, where the ToC rankings are low and the physical sales of the volumes have declined a fair amount, yet it's still alive?

Yuuna's an established series that's past its peak, which is different. It's not a new series they hope will grow into a big hit (and will cancel if they see little potential), it already grew into a successful manga and got an anime, then dropped off later. Like Bleach, Toriko, Beelzebub, Nura, etc., sure it's not as popular as it was before but it's still an established part of the magazine.

Wani definitely has other ideas in mind. Might want to even make it a personal goal to surpass Kimetsu’s chapter count with the next series.

Speaking of authors that stop after one hit, does anyone know what Kiriyama Kouji's story is? Ninku was popular enough to get an anime but ended after less than 2 years, then he seems to have just left the industry entirely for 10 years before returning to do a Ninku sequel (which ran for 3 times as long as original Ninku).

I don't know why you're discarding the pressure of writing a followup to what is now going to be known as one of the absolute biggest hits in the history of the industry; regardless of what she puts out next it is inevitably going to be negatively compared from an achievement standpoint to Kimetsu, even if her next series is a success it's just impossible for a single author to get another hit of this scale. If it does somehow happen, we might as well just put her down as the most successful mangaka of all time because that would be un-freaking-believable, there have been artists with multiple big hits but come on, back-to-back 3+mln seller?

And I do believe Gotouge has all the potential to write something that is definitely better than Kimetsu with better long term planning, but just from an objective point of view, there is simply no way she'll get another hit that big. Her next series will most likely not even be a battle shonen in the first place imho, I definitely do think she'll change genre, might not even be suitable for WSJ honestly.

I could see why she'd want to wait for the "hype" to die down, and that's going to continue atleast for a couple more years due to the anime.

Covers? Sure. Logos on the cover? I'm not so sure.

I get that people are disappointed in the logo, but I don't think it's *so* off-putting to put off potential costumers.
I'm so late since I changed my new phone well then here is my thoughts on Viz logo. As a Computer Graphic designer, the logo did stood out and it is good design on it's own if that was different comic or Manga but their decision making is questionable. I don't see the fault of artist if he didn't knew behind the context or he thinks it is was meant for western market just like superhero comic. It really depends the broad knowledge of an artist.

Before I make logo it is important to research first the source but the hardest of it is the adaptation of designs. It's like I excel the horror theme design but suck on childish theme design etc.

The problem for Viz logo designer that he can't adapt the designs and he prefer on what's best he can do. It's like if you put Kubo as a logo designer but he can't mimic Oda's design because he cant and it's total waste his designs over that, this is why he prefer his style

Well, from what I could gather from the Japanese Wikipedia article on Ninku, it appears that the original series already had month-long breaks, because, as Kiriyama later explained, he was unable to properly draw other martial arts that he had less knowledge about, he struggled with that, apparently. I guess after struggling with the serialization for two years and leaving his series abandoned, I guess he just felt unable to do anything new in the manga industry.

I keep imagining kimetsu and TPN ending and the jump artists drawing the manga characters in their honor.

I do not even want to imagine Nezuko and Emma in the arts of Oda or boichi.
I meannnn.. :hurr

Now that I see some Ninku talk, I want to rescue Tar-chan. This manga was serialized in Jump in 1988 and lasted until 1995. Oda was an assistant in that manga, and you can clearly see how Luffy in OP first years has a similar design to Tar-chan MC.
