Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

As much as I do like seeing demon slayer sales I do wonder if one piece sales has been staying consistent this year or if it had fallen off compared to previous years

I don't think it's a worthy question to pursue, because the coronavirus just completely wrecked most industries.

You might as well just write 2020 off, with a few exceptions.

When One Piece fans and Shuiesha dismiss Kimetsu No Yaiba this year by saying “of course it beat One Piece this year. It was coronavirus year. 2020 doesn’t count”

....Uh...no?

Seriously, what is more likely:

1. One Piece is selling literally as normal because of the fact that new readers don't like the idea of picking up a series approaching 100 volumes.

2. One Piece sales have been somehow cut in half by coronavirus when no other series shows signs of sales drops at the exact same time.

I'm saying this isn't a normal situation, and it's bound to have ramifications beyond what we're able to directly analyze.

It's kind of a scapegoat, in ways. Because even if it's not being affected by the coronavirus, the top brass can just point to it and shrug it off, since it IS affecting literally everything else in the world.

Plus, the coronavirus *is* affecting the anime industry, and we know that has a direct influence on the manga industry. Once anime stops airing outright, that'll definitely start impacting manga sales.

My issue with this is that we don’t really know how big of an effect that COVID-19 is having on manga sales. The manga isn’t stopping Japan from it’s Demon Slayer frenzy, nor is it stopping manga like Dr. Stone from increasing. And for volumes of series that are already declining in sales, the decline doesn’t seem to be sharp enough to really show a clear effect from the virus.

I don’t doubt that there is an effect - having tracked sales of WSC volumes, a few manga had surprisingly sharp declines - but, I do believe that we won’t know for sure about this until we can see volume sales again when everything is relatively less chaotic - or at least when Japan isn’t locked down.

... One Piece didn't lose 50% of it's sales in 2020, it lost ~100k from one volume to another. Not that it's definitely because of coronavirus, especially considering it's the same decline it showed previously and the shoseki estimates being given are still around the same numbers for the same spots, but it's not absurd that some series (not only One Piece) did lose some sales (or they transferred to digital). Off the top of my head, Conan is another series that lost a good amount of copies in the first week this recent volume. Again, it might just be the natural progression, but it's not absurd to think sales slowed down. Even if stuff like Kimetsu and Dr. Stone is growing, maybe it would have sold even more, who knows?

One Piece's sales did not "get cut in half", even compared to volume 95 (which was before coronavirus blowout) volume 96 is only behind 80-90k first month.

To go back to a time where an OP volume could actually be competitive with KnY 18 you'd need to go back to like 2015 or so. It would be more interesting, though.

Yeah, you lose the argument when all you have it "what ifs" and "maybes". And simpler answer for both One Piece and Conan is that people aren't as interested in catching up with series of such size. Both also release digital volumes weeks after the physicals, so you can't argue for digital either.

Knowing how much Araki forgets things and makes up new things as he goes along, I wouldn't be surprised if it was never meant to be multiple parts at first. I think he said at some point that he made stands because he thought hamon was too generic of a power system (since it was really just ki). Who knows, maybe even Hamon wasn't an idea from the start and it was just going to be drama.
I think i've seen pictures of the orignal issue in which Jojo debuted in (Issue 1-2 of 1987) were we could see the 第一部 (Part 1) notation. So I think the part structure was planned all along

...No? Araki has said he did the shift mostly because he found Johnathan too limited a protagonist, hence why Joseph was such a radical departure.

I'm not arguing for digital for One Piece or for Conan, those were just examples. I'm just saying it's not unlikely that there are series that lost sales, @Koni even mentioned examples in WSC. Also, Conan lost like 50k first week, I think it's a sharp enough decline that it's not easily dismissable. You said "literally no other series", but we already mentioned series that had declines, so...

@MrDropCombo Thanks somebody gets me. While I don’t hate gag series I feel like jump is just doing to much with them I just want to see more serious battle series (more in the same vain as d gray man, demon slayer, or hunter hunter), thrillers, and or maybe even a new horror serialization. That is the main reason I have been excited for TOGW because it seems like a more serious than the ones that we have been getting this past year.

I'm curious. You guys mentioned Conan alongside One Piece.

Is there any other weekly super long runners that are experiencing a decline during the coronavirus pandemic?

In this specific question, I'll allow you all to answer with off-topic examples. Surely if super long runners are the only ones being affected, we can point to other examples in different magazines.

What about Hajime no Ippo, etc?

It's hard to properly say how big the coronavirus impact is on sales of any series when you argue about declines over series like conan, which had

Vol 95 - 380.699 (4 days, october 2018)
Vol 96 - 318.160 (5 days, april 2019)
Vol 97 - 256.833 (5 days, december 2019)
Vol 98 - 204.698 (5 days, april 2020)

How can I properly point out how much it lost with coronavirus (if it lost anything at all) when the drop in sales has been a constant for a series for years? Same argument goes for things like SnK, jojolion, black clover, you name it. There probably is a small drop due to coronavirus, but pointing it out isn't possible.

Oh, I was sorta mistaken about Conan, then. Sorry about that. I knew that it was declining, but out of the top of my head it was way less pronounced than 50k a week, that's why I mentioned it.

I think the reason series like Conan, Hajime no ippo, and one piece are losing some sales are because A. The story is to long so it makes it hard for newcomers to want to get into it B. I feel that they are becoming more popular as a multimedia franchise than a manga franchise so more people are watching the anime/ movies than the manga due in fact to anime becoming more popular and manga (with a few exceptions) is not selling as well as it used to C. People are looking for newer, shorter and more accessible hits like kimetsu no yaiba, attack on titan, and my hero academia. This is just a theory so I may be way off right now but I’m just putting how I see it out there if I have said anything wrong about manga sales please let me know
