Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I'm not making that argument, though. Honestly, even if covid-19 hadn't happened, we'd likely still be seeing similar trends in regards to OP specifically.

Although, having said that, I think the worst of the covid-19 stuff has yet to happen. Let's see what happens when it's like a year from now and a vaccine still hasn't been discovered.
Yeeeeah Buranchi, unless you're an epidemiologist, I don't think blind predictions hold much weight.

That's what most of the CDC scientists have been saying, that it's going to take at least a year before a vaccine rolls out, IIRC.

An out and out vaccine? Yes, most likely.

But you're ignoring the effect developing treatments would have on how things go foward. Pandemics don't run on an on-off switch, there's a very specific order on how things are handled and develop.

What exactly is the point of contention here? I said we haven't seen the worst of covid-19, so I'm guessing you disagree? That we have seen the worst and everything will start improving from here on out?

Okay, what are you basing that on exactly?

But surely even without a vaccine a country can recover to the point where sales won't be as drastically affected (though sales is the least of everyone's worries in a global pandemic)? Obviously a vaccine is crucial to prevent multiple waves of COVID-19, but like I've said before if effective measures and advice are issued by governments and abided by the people then changes won't be as drastic as in some countries - e.g. in my country Korea where life has all but returned to normal except for online schooling (and we never even had to have an official nation-wide lockdown either.)

We've established already that manga sales have been increasing with certain series despite the pandemic, correct?

My comment about it possibly affecting the industry was about all these anime shutting down. Will manga be affected when nothing new is airing for multiple months?

We'll see.

Well, this pandemic's high time for the Japanese buyers to go digital. Sure, it doesn't feel as good as the real shit, but you actually reduce the risk of people producing and delivering your physical goods from contacting covid 19.

Then, maybe we might actually have the real legitimate digital sale number, so digital will stop being a meaningless argument here.

Dear lord, one can only hope so. Jump would also look ridiculous if they didn't prioritize digital for the moment for their magazine releses.

Haven't they been doing a bunch of digital stuff? Like making some recent issues free digitally.

Shueisha's one of the better publishers when it comes to going digital.

Yeah they have. But those are the backlogs. My point is that hopefully they don't overprint the issues during these times. I know they should be smart enough to understand the current situation, but I've always been skeptical of their management.

The curve is actually starting to flatten out in Japan or rather slow down unlike a lot of the other places in the world. So hopefully sooner than later, things will be back to normal there.
But yeah, Shueisha should make a push for digital right now.

Another argument in favour of digital is that there won;t be any overprint (looking at you, S8) nor underprint (KnY) with digital.
Also, wonder what happened to those unsold S8? Recycle?

Just caught up lol. (Damn my internet has really been annoying these past days).

Well aside of the usual op vs kny sales. I think the only way we can see an extreme change in sales, either they make every businesses close or apply the martial law (which is almost the same). But honestly, I don't know why ppl are still buying and buying under this conditions.

Here's the article on ishuhui for better clarity:

Will this also affect weibo and tieba in the future? Well, not the site themselves, but the ones who posts the leaks.

I think those two are govt-backed? Either way, I can't imagine they'd be fine with those sites running around posting illegal scans before their official date. Text Spoilers might be fine, but scans will be a no-no. I imagine the government will crack down on those in the future.

I think this is like Christmas and New year's edition, we have spoilers and even the full chapter leaked the week when it's supposed to be in break.

I can see manamoa posting the full chapters in the next hours. It's a miracle that this site is still doing fine.

If I'm not mistaken, Japan government can't apply martial law (it doesn't have the power to do this). That's why Japan government can only suggest people to stay in home.

Even with the pandemic, a lot of Japanese people still buy physical magazine. So, I really doubt Shueisha would focus on Digital Sales.

Yeah, Golden Week is another holiday like those two, so it works much the same way.

Pretty sure they're on the chopping block next, I think. Might be in a year or so this happens.

I'm confident Shueisha's top digital seller will be One Piece with 60million volumes and thus continuing its reign of terror haha. Also somehow Kimetsu No Yaiba Will have minus 3million digital sales in Shueisha's 2020 fiscal report..

This is a sarcastic post about how Shueisha manipulated sales numbers last year.. just in case it needed to be pointed out.

I mean, it would be the smart thing to do if Japanese people stop buying physical copies due to the pandemic.

However, Japanese buyers seems to stil buy a big amount of physical copies.
