Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

@101nemesis

While I do appreciate your opinion/insight on this subject, this isn’t up for debate.

I disagree. I would agree with you if SS's story related specifics were being discussed over 2 pages.

The posts were also comparing how SS wasn't popular in the some parts of the west and the reasons why it might have been.
It's industry related. It's an important series to Shueisha and WSJ and their history but is also similar to something like One Piece in how it never kicked off in some parts of the west. Anime censorship and decisions/choices.

I thought they were interesting since it provides information about a series that is/was popular somewhere you wouldn't have expected. Much rather prefer such discussions than One Piece vs Kimetsu debates or anything else like those. These are actually informative.

They really need to go back to the drawing board with these games. They just aren't fun after the initial brief bit. I couldn't last more than 2 hours with Jump Force. Also, it was so plastic-y. You'd think they'd have a higher budget.
If done well, these games could have become a big thing with recurring sequels. But ALAS.
This.

I'm anyways coming back to the root of the discussion which is Jump general, and attaching it with current Jump roster (in the following paragraph): Saint Seiya being one of the Shonen Jump biggest legends ever but only having 25 million copies in Japan while other titles from the same period (City Hunter, Hokuto no Ken) were +50 million sellers.

I recall in some MHA discussion here in previous days I commented MHA could be on a similar situation: potential to be one of the most important manga of Shonen Jump history despite having a low number of copies for a Jump legend (for now, I see MHA achieving at least 40 million copies in circulation).

Another manga that comes me to mind is Hitman Reborn, but I think MHA has already more legacy than Reborn.

So how about that massive drop Yuuna suffered in the TOC?
It seems that Yuuna, while sticking mostly to the double digit rankings (but never dead last), seems to fluctuate a lot. In a way, it's kind of like Jojo in that regard.

Well, it's going to end anyway so it doesn't care about TOC placement anyway. Plus even if people don't vote for it, they buy it and that's what mangaka's really want, you get cash for sales, not rankings. Doubleplus boobs and butts always sell nicely if drawn nicely in Jump thus Yuuna doesn't have to worry because it got an established base of fans and buyers already even if said people don't bother voting for it in the TOC.

Yuuna's been about to end for about 2 years now though.

Who knows if it's actually going to end this time or if it's going to return to silly shenanigans for a while again like the other big climactic arcs.

Yeah, MHA is definitely more important than Reborn. Just from the very fact that we already have mangaka draw inspiration from MHA and how WSJ itself considers this generation to be MHA's generation.

Reborn wasn't super influential. I think it's biggest contribution was having a successful female mangaka in WSJ with a battle manga competing with Oda/Kishi/Kubo pretty well for long time.

You'd think Amano's success in WSJ would've prompted more female mangaka to get into WSJ.

We may never know. We already seen all the rival yokai clans, most of them gotten subdued as a result. Except for any Tenko clan members still out there other than Nadare.

It could be more Kogarashi relations with the girls or they could have a final yokai clan we know little about.

How many known female mangaka did we have in wsj before Reborn?

Currently I think there's 2 we know for sure are women (Act-age and Neverland artists) and a couple more that are rumoured/suspected to be women, while I remember seeing a cover page with all the jump creators in person on it from back around the golden age and they were all men.

Not before Reborn, but at the same time and year, D.Gray-man author.

I recall Dragon Quest Dai no Daiboken and Hikaru no Go had female authors, but they were co-authors in both cases. I am having the doubt of Hoshi Engi now

Pretty sure D-Grayman mangaka is a woman. And D Grayman was a great seller, if it continued it probably would have surpassed Reborn in per volume sales.

Mizuki Kawashita (Ichigo 100%) is the only oen I know for sure
Hajime Kazu was one before her.

This arc will change the staus quo. Who knows how exactly how it will play out, but it won't be the same anymore.

@Mankichi Togawa what do you mean Dragon Quest Dai no Daiboken? I don't think either of the authors is female?

And Hoshin Engi? Ryu Fujisaki is a man, isn't he?

Whistle's Daisuke Higuchi Is a woman too. Weird how Shueisha forgot about Whistle, it sold very very well.

Oh yeah. Whistle sold almost 20 million of copies. But it and Nube are for some reason neglected when merchandising.

I sometimes like to imagine Arakawa going in Shueisha's building like one badass b***h one day, and dropping her name in front of the EiC, and just sits there to say "I've got your next 1M seller right here, now sign the damn contract I spent all night making".

It's a long shot, but hey, a man can dream.

Nube still gets some things at least, it got a TV drama a few years ago and he showed up in J-stars.

Whistle's problem I think is that it came after Slam Dunk and Captain Tsubasa (world youth specifically), ran together with Prince of Tennis and Rookies, and ended just after Eyeshield 21 started, and was shorter than all of them too, so it got overshadowed by the other big sports hits.

Whistle's a sports series surrounded by a bunch of bigger, more influential series so I guess it's kind of passed over as a result (though I think it has an ongoing sequel manga like everything else from the 90s so there's that at least).

It must have sold more than Rising Impact though, a golf series that ran around the same time as Whistle/PoT.

I had no fucking idea D-Grayman's mangaka is a woman. Or I think I forgot.
Yeah I think D-Grayman would've been bigger than Reborn had it gotten the chance.

Jeez, wouldn't that be the dream. I put her on the same tier as Togashi.

Rising Impact gets occasional promotion because Nanatsu no Taizai's success is like free advertising for it. Whistle's author hasn't done anything big since Whistle ended.
