Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Quite when did story stop somehow being relevant?

If I wanted to watch action, I'd look at two action figures punching each other. The reason why we care about fights to begin with is because of the narrative and meaning behind them. If it didn't, it be, quote Raymond Chandler, "fiction born for psychopaths".

You simply can't pull a separation card.

Sorry, but I can't buy that argument.

Although Naruto sold a lot (which he did), he has never exceeded volume sales or sales at the end of the fiscal year. It is one thing for you to have someone who represents a challenge and you find it fun and healthy, another very different thing is to see that they drastically surpassed you, as is the case in this year 2020. Naruto was broadcast for 10 years and in none, it exceeded to One Piece.

And that's not to mention everyone else who sold less than Naruto. Of course Oda will be happy with his success. They are light years away from reaching their numbers, and he knows that. Oda does not have to be angry about the success of manga like BnHA, etc.
What are you on. Naruto sold more outside Japan the OP did xD That's all he is saying

This is all baseless speculation. You said it yourself already, we have no way of knowing how Oda really truly feels, so statements like this is all your head-cannon. There is literally years of evidence for Oda being supportive of "rival series" (calling them this is kind of a stretch) and talking about the new generation of Jump manga in pretty similar ways, that is tangible stuff we can discuss.

We can go in circles talking about how Oda "really" feels, but that's just ridiculous. Oda is a human being too and is allowed to feel however he wants about KnY, but speculating too much about his private life is rude, especially considering that he's good friends with most of the Jump mangaka he praises.

I don't want to talk about this anymore (and I kind of wrote too much anyway), so I'll just leave it at this:
we should not affirm things that neither you nor I nor anyone really knows.

Hey, out of the ongoing topic, can someone make a summary of KnY's toc rankings? Or is there one already done?

I base myself on what they sell in Japan, which is what they prioritize. And in case I have misunderstood him, he is already there to correct me, and I guess he doesn't need someone to speak for him. :hi

So I don't understand the answer. Because I barely replied to whoever claimed that Oda was okay with the fact that he was outdone by DS. Because nobody knows him to affirm such a thing. The fact that Oda supports the other mangakas in no way invalidates everything I said previously. You can support manga and authors but feel bad about seeing your work surpassed. You yourself have said it, he is a person after all.

I found it productive, but I also consider this debate settled. I don't want to continue filling pages with things that are not the main topic of this subforum either. I barely gave my opinion on what was said.

You want a sum of all the rankings since the beginning of serialization?

Man, I wish this fan account wouldn't continue to use formulations like "we're" and such. It just comes off as sleazy and misleading considering they are unofficial.
Yikes. You're right. That's very misleading.
They are very clearly trying to trick some people into thinking they are the official sources. Some casual followers won't bother checking their twitter description.

In the end, of course i am also speculating but my points at least have some foundation to it becuae i am supporting them with examples. Of course, Oda could also be a grumpy man but nobody here lives in his head, so there is no way of knowing. I am just saying that most things he did or said point otherwise. Of course, you could just assume that he is lying every time but then it's a rabbit hole with no end. He literally said that Naruto exceeded him internationally. What more could he say? Don't buy my argument. Just live in your own head canon then.
Also i wouldn't say that KnY has "drastically" surpassed One Piece. Is it more popular than OP at the moment? Of course. But OP is still a cultural milestone over there. Every japanese person has at least heard of OP. I wouldn't say that KnY is on that level yet.

Uhh... I mean if you're going to argue about extent and exaggerations then I wouldn't use that as a premise for your argument lol...
Its not a exaggeration though. At least, from my own perspective, i can say that every japanese person that i met so far, even if they didn't watch or read any Manga, knew of One Piece. You got Anpanman, Doraemon, Sazae-San, Shin Chan and maybe 2 or 3 shows more and then One Piece. Those are the Manga / Anime that the general japanese public is aware of.

For you, your points may have all the foundation you want, but just because you don't think mine don't have it doesn't mean they don't really have them.
I give my opinion and you yours. Let everyone feel free to identify with which one seems most correct.

You say that everything Oda has done or said says the opposite of the possibility that I put forward. What was Oda supposed to do if he thought something negative? Cut heads? To speak ill of the authors or of their works? That is the foundation that you expose? Oda would never do that in public, we are talking about Japan, where education and respect prevail. It is not Europe or America, that any opportunity serves to criticize someone in public.

If having 38 million over another manga (fiscal year) for you isn't drastically outperforming One Piece, then one of us doesn't understand what the words "drastic" mean.

Yeah, uh...those series you've mentioned?

They're episodic family series.

One Piece is a fully serialised narrative which needs to be read sequentially. It's not really comparable.

Arguing that Kimetsu "isn't on OP's level" is a rather head-tilting argument to me when Kimetsu is nowhere near OP in length and yet thanks to the anime has been able to became a legit goddamn phenomena in the country. Check JP twitter and even people who wouldn't even go near Jump are talking about it.

Regarding the discussion what is well-written, good or bad, better, etc.

Well != Good or bad.

Whether something is good or bad is entirely subjective.
Whether somethig is well-written is not. It gets thrown around like it's subjective, but "well" means that something is logical and makes sense in its context.
Ex. "These shoes are well made and could last me a decade, but the style is not good."

FMA and HxH do not have to hold high value to you, but most events in these series make logical sense or have in-universe explanations.
In the current line-up, Yozakura is considered good by many and has done better than several new-comers, but from what I read, it is not well-written. The Promised Neverland is considered bad by most people, but it is not as badly written as people say. Isabella's arc made sense, even if some didn't like it.

Tbh this is a really pointless argument, but I'll just say that 'every japanese person you met so far' isn't exactly an accurate indicator of what "every japanese person" knows or has heard of. You're admitting that you exaggerated by using your personal experience with a few natives to extrapolate on the whole country - there's not a single show or piece of literature in the world that every person in a country has heard of, as you will always find exceptions. Like I said, i'm just nitpicking, so don't mind me.
Also, One Piece is not on the same level of cultural influence/popularity as Doraemon and Anpanman, and is certainly not as much of a household name.

I am fully aware that they are family cartoons and they are comparable because the only thing im saying is that those family shows and a few other shows are the only things that stand above OP in Japan. That's it.

Let me explain myself once again and this is the last time because its tiresome: I was obviously not talking about volume sales. I am talking about relevance. One Piece has theme park rides, restaurants etc. If you've been to Japan, you'd know that the Strawhat characters are plastered everywhere over there. Even if you don't want to, you will know the characters just by seeing them so much. I wouldn't go without a day of not seeing something related to OP and its not like i was looking for it. Let's make an analogy: Everyone likes the Donald Duck cartoons (or used to as a kid). Just because the Pixar movies are doing really well at the moment, doesn't mean that Donald Duck has been drastically surpassed.
KnY is a phenomena at the moment but it will take some time to be on "that" level yet which im talking about. Manga sales aren't everything. Conan sells around 500k per volume but its movies make 100 million us$. I just had a issue with the "drastically" because it implies that OP has just been completely overshadowed which i don't agree with.
Also i don't want to come of as hater of KnY. I've been one of its OG fans when people didn't even want to touch it because of its artstyle. I just find it funny that the success of KnY is celebrated more by the haters of OP than the fans of KnY. Just stop exaggerating like OP is now completely done and over with.

I actually think that a lot of you people here don't know how well-known OP really is over there.

I just wanted to make my undermine my point with saying that every person i know, also knows it. I wasnt saying it was on the same level as Doraemon. My post shows that I placed it under all those shows and its waaay below Doraemon. "One Piece is not a household name." Come on, maybe you don't like OP which is fine, but that's just bs.
