Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

All KnY volumes 1-19 are above three million now. Just to point out another trivia.

Also, SxF. Those numbers are massive!
Yeah, as Ryuusei said, being the first volume post-S4 probably helped things. And did they do PVs like this for previous volumes? No clue if that helped any.
It's very odd for an increase to be that significant.
This isn't a new series and if there was supposed to be an uptick in sales, it should've happened during the anime's run itself as the story progressed.

Any chance HQ!! released a day earlier and tracked 6 days of sales instead of 5?

I completely forgot about Spy x Family. 310k in five fucking days. I thought 300k was too high. If HeroAca and Neverland can’t do that, then holy shit, Spy x Family will have essentially conquered all of Jump barring OP and KNY in monthly sales. In 4 volumes. With no anime.

Producers behind Kaguya’s anime better be watching and offering.

KNY 20 will sell 600 000 this week I'd say and then will sell out in it's 3rd week.

Any of you think that the only reason why Mitama is still alive is because the editors took a liking to it and they're trying to keep it afloat? Just a crackpot theory of mine.
They haven't needed to cancel it yet.

In the first batch since it started (Zipman, AB) it was too new to cancel.
In the second batch (Undead, Mashle, Guardian) they didn't need anything extra to end since they ended a bunch of stuff together earlier.
And for the current batch Zipman was performing much worse, Samurai 8, while selling better, was massively under expectations with clear negative growth, and Kimetsu no Yaiba ended naturally.

It hasn't been favoured, it's just had good circumstances so far. And with Guardian doing poorly, Neverland about to end, and possibly Yuuna too, it might continue to stick around for another batch or two unless it drops to the bottom 3.

I don't get how Kishimoto doesn't have a core fanbase that buys everything he does. Ofc he does have one but its really small. Mashima and even smaller Mangaka (in comparison) like Ken Akamatsu, Kenjiro Hata or Fujita have a much bigger core fanbase that crosses over to every new Manga their favorite Mangaka makes.
Happy to see Haikyuu doing better after the new Anime season.

Too much time between the two works + Boruto between them that could take away hype

Mashima, Fujita, Hata, and Akamatsu's later manga were at least about the same quality as their earlier one that gathered their fanbase, plus they're in magazines that seem to favour veterans a lot more than WSJ.

Samurai 8 however got a mixed reception from the first chapter and its image didn't improve as it went on, so his older fans who maybe don't read WSJ will have mostly heard that it's disappointing and might just not bother. Plus we'd seen from Bort that series Kishimoto's involved with can end up being not very good, so that's not going to help build faith that it'll turn out good later if you push past the bad first two volumes either.

Not to mention it was highly promoted and took a long time to release a volume, so by the time v1 and 2 were out all potential buyers will have heard about it being disappointing.

Personally, Bort should've just ended up as a GT project. It stands well on its own, and it's clear the people behind it have a vision independent of Kishimoto's on its own. The (overlord, greedy) production committee shouldn't have tagged Kishi's name on it from the start.

I've wondered a couple times of Samurai 8 might have actually sold better if it got less promotion.

If I saw Samurai 8 being advertised in another manga I bought or on a poster in the subway or something, I'd be curious and find out what people were saying about it online (and hence see people saying it's not worth reading), but if I was in a bookshop looking around and saw "Samurai 8! By the creator of Naruto!" sitting there without hearing about it before I'd probably just buy it.

I guess it all doesn't matter now though, it's already dead.

S8 definitely should've had less promotion and hype around it. Unless they knew/felt for a fact that the first chapter was going to be incredibly well received, the hype and promotion WSJ tried to garner should've been a lot more controlled.

But the blame is mostly all on Kishi with regards to his decision to just make it harder for people to follow the series with the info dump rather than keep it interesting and entertaining.
It still baffles me that he did that. It was definitely his misguided perception that his name alone or/and fans from Naruto will stick around long enough for S8 to get "good".

There is usually a positive effect in saying the original creator is involved with the spin off work in some capacity. So, I can see why they wanted to keep Kishi's name in it.
But yeah, there are negatives as well like many have mentioned.

Which spin off/gaiden do you feel it was completely unnecessary for the main series?
For me it was Sarada gaiden, that soup opera plot was too much.

Maybe the Edajima prequel of Sakigake! Otokojuku.

The manga itself was fun, but it feels like a completely different character than the Edajima from the main series and only really hurts his character imo. Otokojuku has so many spin-offs about random side characters.

Aren't all spin-offs unnecessary to the main series by definition (usually. I'm looking at you, Horikoshi and Tabata)? They're supposed to be extras.

But it was really a very smart move ....
