After susprisingly found out that everyone here was really fond of Mashle, I read its first 6 chapters of Mashle. Quite pleasantly, Mashle is decent. Not great, decent. Actually, I have a wall of text about it.
First, the elephant in the room, Mashle art is, well, bad. It's just bad, and not consistently bad enough that warp back into quirky like mitama. Hell, the sequence showcase the principal power actually looks great. But most of the time, the art is plain terrible. The worst offenders are dem face marks, they are atrocious.
But don't let the art and its gag nature fool you. Behind them is quite a sophisticated story. The setting is weirdly elaborated for a gag manga and quite easy to sumerise: imagine Voldemort win and remove all Muggle. So the story is literally the struggle of an outcast against the system. I like Mash as a concept. Unlike the chosen one, child of prophecy Harry Potter, Mash's uniqueness are 100% due to his own effort. Mash's struggle to defeat the magic authoritarian society could be seen as a class war, or even race war (if this world is similar to shin sekai yori where magic users are literally a mutated race). Then, the moral of this manga could be that the oppressed people must try their best to improve their unique quality (similar to how Mash train his muscle) in order to have an opportunity to overthrow the system. Well, what's next, Mash-Che Guavera askes prole - I mean non magic users to rise up? But then, most of the time, Mash got away with his antic due to the principal's cover up. So the moral of the story is that the oppressed can only rise up when the ruling class are fond of them? Or maybe I'm just reading to much into this little dumb gag manga. Well, I can only figure that out by reading more Mashle.
