Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I wonder what the New Years parties are like. Probably all of them acting like animals to vent from their work or something.
I personally think that they are low key, subdued events with minimal drinking and low overall craziness......... until Chad Fujimoto shows up and things take turn for the wild with drinking games, drinking games with flamethrowers while ice skating and using illegal purchased weapons from Russia to fish while on a yatch with Shinzo Abe and Nakano partying all night which would make for a very interesting manga

I'd argue sakuragi was a hot blooded idiot too, but underwent incredible development we don't see him as an idiot anymore

Adult protagonists are also quite rare in Jump.

Kankichi Ryotsu, Ryo Saeba, Goku, Meisuke Nueno, and Kenshiro as examples.

Which makes sense as shonen manga usually have a young protagonist their audience can relate to 85% of the time.

The new big trend in Shonen Jump is the mc couple, almost everything from 2019 until now that still in the magazine has a couple as mc, Yozakura, Mitama, Undead, Guardian, Bone and Ghostwriter, even Yugen one shot is about a guy and a girl, most of them in some kind of protective role and even romantic, and this gets more obvious seeing Agravity Boys that are about 4 guys being the least popular in the toc (ofc excluding Guardian)

Also counting the canceled we had Saiyuki, Kamio Yui and Samurai 8, these three that also had the romantic and protective role going on. 2018 also had some but started to be really proeminent in 2019
And this is why I want a badminton manga with a mixed doubles MCs based on the GOAT couple.

You're forgetting Kenshin, who's the same age as I am, despite looking like he could pass for 10 years younger (which has been lampshaded multiple times)

His Japanese voice doesn't help at all either

Shimabu got 2 successful series that feature hot blooded MC's, Takeshi & Toriko. Id say Toriko isn't an idiot tho and he was also an adult.

I would say Toriko is closer to the Kenshiro model. Which is probably a factor into Toriko failing to make a big hit among the audience as Jump had hoped. At the very least, it was successful in its own right.

I still find it hilarious that Takeshi is 9 years old despite looking like a short buff man.

Toriko failed in being a hit among the audience (to the extent Jump wanted) because he was quite boring as an MC. If you ever read Takeshi, it'll surprise you how much more interesting Takeshi is than Toriko as a character with how little chapters are translated, he's charismatic with his classmates which is nice to see. That's probably why Takeshi was a huge hit (series was overall more relatable) and it didn't reach its full potential since it never received an anime.

Even when Toriko ended, I saw Japanese readers wanting Shimabu to come back with something like Takeshi. Hell, even Akutami is a fan of Takeshi.

Obligatory Gintoki mention here, cant let go of adult MC talk and have the Shiroyasha being left out

So, this is something Greg of the One Piece Podcast speculated about that I found interesting, but he speculated that a major factor to the success of Kimetsu post-anime as well as the like of MHA is that protagonists who are built on ideas like compassion and have large amounts of internal thought appeal far more to modern readers than hot-blooded idiot heroes like Luffy. Greg's an elementary school teacher if I recall, so he does know what he's talking about.

So, what happened? Anyone has an idea as to why the stereotype hero that is associated with the likes of Goku/Luffy/Naruto/Gon/Asta has gone out of favour?
Eh. This is just a random statement.
Most series that have a calm MC usually has a fiery side kick and an edgy/cool character to compensate for it. Usually the latter two characters end up being more popular than the actual MC.

Like, Bakugou literally was voted the most popular character in the latest MHA poll. Previous poll had Bakugou and Todoroki ahead of Deku.
Whereas, for One Piece - Luffy has been the consistent favorite character in all polls.

So this argument that hot-blooded heroes are out of favor is just a misplaced opinion, at best.
UxU literally has a hot blooded MC.

Side Note - Gon is far from your stereotypical battle manga MC. He is not hot blooded at all. He's passionate in many ways in his actions but he doesn't rush into a fight without thinking. Two very different things. Deku has clear inspirations from Gon, if anything. The times Gon became hot blooded, they became pivotal turning points in HxH's story because of the consequences of his actions.
Also, unlike most other MCs, Gon's age shines through. He doesn't act like an adult unlike most other MCs. His innocence as a kid is what makes him so lovable.

Well right now, Undead has an “adult” protagonist. Andy is an ancient adult to boot. Also, hot-blooded but pretty intelligent in battles.

Ehh you really think this was the reason why Toriko wasn't a bigger hit? lol

It felt like Toriko was a mishmash of two different fashion trends that had gone out of style and tried to pass themselves as something "new".

Besides, the editorial team are the ones who decide on the poses and cover composition, not Tabata
Not necessarily. True, usually the editor needs to approve the cover image that the mangaka produces, but the mangaka themselves draw the cover first.

I would say Goku doesn't even really into that same category as Luffy and Naruto. Goku wasn't not necessarily an idiot, but was raised outside of society and thus had no concept of it and a very simple world view. And this behavior went mostly away when Goku became an adult, aka the time when Dragon Ball got really popular. Sure, he can be hot-blooded in a fight, but... who doesn't?

If anything, Super regressed Goku more into this hot-blooded idiot thing akin Luffy, but that's long after the fact.

Goku never really changed or matured that much. The funi dub really changed up his characterization as an adult through vocal performance and dialog which is why I think a lot of people have that perception.
