Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I don't think Jump has had a Kendo/Kenjutsu manga before, right? I'd love to see that.
We had Kurogane

Didn't we have a poll previously and discussed this very subject?
Yeah, you're right we did I think.

As someone that missed this poll, what were the Top 5 winners of it?
I don't recall offhand. I think ice skating was really high up, same with fishing, IIRC.

Ah, fishing and ice skating would actually be interesting for Jump to explore.

The latter is more popular than ever thanks to Yuri on Ice.

Wasnt it Ice Hockey that was high? And also, how popular is fishing in Japan as a sport? That would actually be very interesting manga for sure

Was there an Outrage in Japan or was it an Outrage on the Internet ?

Given asta's powers its more than likely a coincidence even if it wasn't and it was an imitation it isn't much of a problem(unless the original author says its a problem) ,after all imitation is sincerest form of flattery(do people really have a problem with this) .
Besides, the editorial team are the ones who decide on the poses and cover composition, not Tabata

lol you were literally here when Kurogane was published for over a year kkkk

Any one note the disturbing similarity between the new CP for Bokuben and the CP for Yuuna 181?
Not more weird than Mitama and Moriking publishing at the same time the same chapter about parents returning home for the first time and seeing the daughter in a awkward situation with the male mc, and in the next issue Bone Collection did the same! These authors are hanging around together too much.

Well, sorry for being a Jump noob during that time, and not following this thread until 2011-ish. /s.

So, this is something Greg of the One Piece Podcast speculated about that I found interesting, but he speculated that a major factor to the success of Kimetsu post-anime as well as the like of MHA is that protagonists who are built on ideas like compassion and have large amounts of internal thought appeal far more to modern readers than hot-blooded idiot heroes like Luffy. Greg's an elementary school teacher if I recall, so he does know what he's talking about.

So, what happened? Anyone has an idea as to why the stereotype hero that is associated with the likes of Goku/Luffy/Naruto/Gon/Asta has gone out of favour?

The same reason the muscle bound badass stoic men like Kenshiro, early Jojo, that city hunter guy made way for the goku stereotype, it fell out of favour with people and they wanted something differet.

people like something-->they get a lot if it-->they get tired of it either because it becomes too much or they see something else they prefer or both--->they start liking the new thing-->more of the new thing gets made-->they become tired again and the cycle continues

I would argue that Naruto was very much the prototype for current Shonen MCs like Deku and Tanjirou. Yes, he was based on the Goku prototype, but that was on the outside. Deep down, he's incredibly compassionate towards others, because he knows what it feels like to be hurt. Sadly, the anime flanderized this aspect of his character, and for the whole series' duration, that compassion was also sometimes misplaced.

Nevertheless, Naruto still provided some of the blueprint that current Shonen Jumps MCs emulate, at least in that aspect.

This reminds me of that quote horikoshi said about Naruto in Shonen Jump 50th anniversary he said " Naruto isn't like a Shonen manga character. He's an innocent heart feeling distressed while advancing, which is very cool for many times. When Naruto struggles in the mud and made me excited even now when I reread I can still get encouragement from it."

Have we actually had much of a trend of hot-blooded idiots among successful series in WSJ? Besides Goku, Luffy and Asta, have we really had many of them?

Only other big ones that come to mind are twists on it, like how Naruto's hot blooded thing is a mostly act to hide loneliness, and Tsuna from Reborn is a clumsy loser who has to be forced to become hot-blooded with special weapons. Maybe Dai's one? I haven't read Dragon Quest.

The biggest overall Jump trend in MCs I think would probably be well-meaning delinquents. Rokudenashi Blues, Jojo part 3-6, YYH, Slam Dunk, BØY, Rookies, Beelzebub. They've definitely fallen out of fashion as main characters in jump though.

The new big trend in Shonen Jump is the mc couple, almost everything from 2019 until now that still in the magazine has a couple as mc, Yozakura, Mitama, Undead, Guardian, Bone and Ghostwriter, even Yugen one shot is about a guy and a girl, most of them in some kind of protective role and even romantic, and this gets more obvious seeing Agravity Boys that are about 4 guys being the least popular in the toc (ofc excluding Guardian)

Also counting the canceled we had Saiyuki, Kamio Yui and Samurai 8, these three that also had the romantic and protective role going on. 2018 also had some but started to be really proeminent in 2019
