Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Yesterday they were #64 and #76, respectively.
Huh, that's interesting. The newer series have been jumping up occasionally, so I guess this isn't that unusual.

Jump just shared this on their Twitter.
LOL, it's actually just funny at this point. Shueisha hasn't said a word for KNY breaking the record, hasn't said a word about the ridicolous explosion the series has had, planned a reprint 2 days after release a month in advance so first print wouldn't exceed 3mln and the only thing they say about it is..."but look guys, Wano is fun too!".
Freaking laughing my ass off actually, you can smell the butthurt a mile away. Just cope already and move on, shueisha.

I think Shueisha finally realised that Slam Dunk 20s-30s volumes, not the big 3 with 70s volumes, is the optimum length, and allowed tpn (good riddance) and kny to end when author wanted to.
Also, I posed that question as a hypothesis, using "maybe", so we can all just agree to disagree ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think Bleach Naruto and One Piece are all abnormalities and can not be any measure to current manga because they were that big. Bleach alone had over 20 Video Games on top of 4 movies by the time the Anime ended . There are still People that are releasing discussion videos on youtube with over 100k views on events that happened 12 years ago in the manga. The world wide impact those 3 had is pretty irreplaceable.

It's just rare for all the content to be justified. Only Jump series that work long-running imo are Jjba and Hunter x Hunter, and I'm willing to bet it's because there is no over-arching plot. How do you justify 400+ weeks of becoming hokage, becoming the number one hero, or finding the gun devil without it feeling cheap?
What about Gintama? IMO, I would definitely count Gintama among the series that work and don't decrease in quality despite its length.

The people tend to forget that there are many more medium-short series than long series among the great hits of Jump (and other magazines).

The average duration of a series on WSJ magazines is about 5-6 years, some a little less, some a little longer (4-8), those that reach or even exceed 10 are very few.

Reminds me of this recent comment from a longtime editor at Shueisha, lol:

Can't wait to see how the Jump editorial handles the next KnY-level hit. Hopefully they'll be more in touch next time around...

An interesting fact.

With shakunetsu no Niraikanai, jump has 4 series with adult MC. The other 3 are:

Mitama - Mitama segurity
Teppei - TPGW
Andy - Undead unluck
There's a difference between MC and protagonist. The MC is the character from which perspective the story is told while the protagonist is the character that drives the plot forward. All three characters you mentioned are protagonists, but only Teppei is the MC. Mitama's MC is Rena and Undead Unluck's MC is Fuuko because the stories are told from their perspectives. Btw, it's interesting to note that Jump seems to have a huge increase of series with female MCs and another character (usually male) being the protagonist (Mitama, Undead Unluck, Moriking and from the way it seems so far Magu-chan as well).

I know food anology is dumb, but bear with me. McDonald is the biggest restaurant chain in the world. But does it serve the best food, or even good food?
I am arguing for a quality story, not the most profitable story.

I like Gintama a lot, but it's not really good when it tried to be serious. Honestly I dropped it after shogun died and only pick up when the ending being announced, then had to witness how bad Gorrilla at planning.

What are some series you'd like to see current Jump mangaka try once they finish their current series.

For me;
Tabata- A slice of life rom/school comedy.

Furudate- A space adventure epic. Something like a modern Cobra only with less ecchi and more teamwork.

Akutami- A spokon. Basketball or baseball perhaps. Perhaps make them also be a delinquent spokon. Or maybe a delinquent battle manga. He'd do great with an urban setting with a cast of youth gang members in turf wars.

Tamura- A comedy spokon. Perhaps hockey or rugby.

Yabuki- Black Cat 2, or the artist for Hunter x Hunter.

I would like to see Horikoshi give a space battle Shonen another try when he’s done MHA.
Same
As someone who mostly liked Omgadoki Zoo and liked My Hero Academia for a while, Sensei no Bulge felt so half assed to me. As if Horikoshi's soul really wasn't with it.
It's a real shame too because the setting had a lot of potential, and Horikoshi drawing different alien species, alien cities and landscapes, and Galactic vistas on a weekly basis sounds like a real treat.
I feel the same about Furudate though, and also feel he's a stronger writer for both characters and story.
Although speaking of Furudate, I answered no to the poll because I only binge read Haikyuu at the end of a match, so like super duper infrequently haha. Really love it though.

After that Deku art wearing Karasuno's uniform, Horikoshi takling a spokon wouldn't be bad
Fujimoto, probably a ganster series
Gondaira, after that Genjui Toteku one shot, I would like to see him do a horror type series

Fujimoto should just do whatever the hell he wants, but I would love to see his take on either a traditional romance or romcom. His one-shots have some interesting ideas in that category that would be fun to see in a full serialization!

I would also be interested to see either Tsutsui or Tabata try a sports series of some sort. I think that they could create some pretty good team dynamics.

This is your opinion some people like long shounen some peopel don't.

Some people think one piece, naruto and bleach have declined in quality some people don't.

Some people think the war arc is peak naruto some people don't.

Some people think reading weekly is dumb some people don't. (for example one piece or naruto are way better binged than read weekly half of the problem with dressrosa or the war arc dissappear when you binge read it).

People enjoy different things, and quality is hard to judge because when you are enjoying something you tend to ignore its flaws(hunterxhunter, jojo's, one piece all their fans usually ignore their flaws)

I agree with all you just said.
What I mean with that food anology is that, profitability or how big one franchise is doesn't always equal to it being good.
If just based on sales metric, you could claim Fairy Tail is better than Kenshin, FMA and Kingdom ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There are some people actually like McDonald after all, and I have no problems with that.

Not that I disagree that saying sales = quality is stupid, but all 3 of those sold better than FT ever did per volume.
That said, sales are sales. Quality is quality. They are not synonyms.

The definition of a failure is a series that can’t even crack 100 chapters. Or just get much less than that.

150 is not even close to a failure.
Success is not a metric defined by chapter number. Otherwise you could claim Bleach is more successful than dragon ball, or that Saiki K. is more successful than Slump.

Success is defined by sales. That's all there is to it.

Wikipedia doesn't have sales per volume so dunno ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As one doesn't believe in any numeric ratings for art, I never really care about sales numbers either.

Sales numbers are an interesting metric, they just aren't there to measure quality. I have no idea why anyone would try to argue otherwise. By this logic the best movies ever made would be Avengers and Avatar.

Like I said, sales are sales, and quality is quality.
