I don't think Furudate will stop working on Haikyuu at all even with the "main" series ending, franchise still big, anime will get more seasons, probably more novels and i wouldn't rule out any sort of sequel/spinoff with him in charge, it's almost the norm with big sport series, also Furudate doesn't seem tired of the series at all and is one of the healthiest Jump authors. What i mean is that i see a good possibilit that he will just keep working with the franchise and writing/drawing more stuff for it than just leaving and trying something completely new on Jump.
This is my hunch. It'll be easy (and I would love) for them to continue Haikyuu!! especially while the anime is still such a successful franchise. If there's anything to go from the dialogue in the recent chapter by the mangaka character it might be a hint that they are already working on their next project now.
So I’m finally catching up and binge reading Act-Age. And I can honestly say that I believe this is by far the best written series in Jump right now. And I would go as far as to say this may be one of the best written manga Jump has every had(at least in the 20ish+ years I’ve been following Jump)
I would be inclined to agree! I honestly can't think of another WSJ series in the modern era that feels so grounded, devoid of typical Shonen tropes, and mature in how it handles the psychological damage/aftereffects of the protagonist after their "battles". I hope it gets a successful anime soon and stays in the magazine for a long time.
Haikyu has only taken 3 breaks throughout its run, I believe.
The first time ever was the Brazil Research one in Issue 47 2019.
The second time was when the author suddenly fell ill, in Issue 11 2020.
The third time was also for research, in Issue 14 2020.
That's still 7 years and 9 months without a single break, pretty impressive
Furudate , Kubo and Jujutsu's Kaisen author are the type of author that work better in a weekly serialization than a monthly one, their pacing would be even more slowly if they begin to work in Jump SQ.
I would like that Furudate made a 1 volume anthology of horror stories similar to the anthologies that Ito or Uguisu made sometimes
I say there's a good chance of getting one eventually, though maybe not right away. A lot of the time we get sequels a few years later after the author's next couple series flop.
There's certainly plenty of set up for a possible sequel about the olympics or something.
Just seems unlikely when the next chapter is the olympics, plus characters have been going overseas already to play. I dont think anyone wants more beyond just seing the dream team play [1] match. Anything more is just overkill especially in the context that its just another repeat of the current arc just putting Kags beside Hinata as he was for 350+ chapters already.
Also don't really know if that adds anything. A 2nd generation story would feel more worthwhile to explore (major2nd style etc).
A story talking about what happened during the 2nd and 3rd year at Karasuno would be interesting since that was basically skipped over beyond a line or two here or there.

apart from illustrations, I thought Furudate isnt the writer of the novels. Also I dont know if people were saying step away from the franchise completely since even old series get new illustrations, I thought the conversation was more about heavily involved exploration of HQ, or the original conversation was what will Furudate do next.
I guess they could, but I really hope it doesn't end up being the case. Furudate has shown to be an amazing writer and artist, and it would be kinda sad for me if they just decided to stick forever with the same universe, characters and mechanics, instead of exploring other genres or maybe not necessarily that, it could be even sports but something else completely different. I don't think someone with so much talent and effort, that has been shown during all these 8 years, should reduce all of it to a single production/franchise. I'm really expecting them to come back in the future with maybe horror, which is something they tried previously. Of course, this is all coming from the mangaka's own volution. If they decided to stick with Haikyu!! with new sequels and content I'd completely respect their decision, but I wouldn't find it the most suitable one considering their tastes.
Story-wise they could pick up where it's ending, though we'll have to see how much the final chapter actually covers. Like SharkBait mentioned, there's also the years between the time skip - there's easily years of potential content there to mine for cash, but I doubt we'll ever get the full story. I think if Furudate does continue with Haikyuu!! content then it'll be in the way of short spin-offs more than anything. Whether it's that or a new series entirely I'll happily take anything they offer.
It would make a lot of sense. Also worth pointing out that the final chapter is coming out on the same week the 2020 Olympics were supposed to start. Too bad the two events aren't crossing over at the same time on and off the page, that would have been something else.

Obviously we have no way of knowing if Furudate planned it for certain to end on next week's issue, but if they did I'm sure it would have been possible to make the story a few chapters more or less overall somewhere along the way to compensate for changes in Jump/scheduled breaks. Might just be a coincidence, albeit a very specific real world crossover that feels intentional.
