Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

I never said this. Shanks with his crew is incomparably stronger than Mihawk. Shanks without his crew is weaker than Mihawk.

My boi asks if he wins will it be because of his strength. Where is the skill?
If Shanks is weaker, and his crew is a dozen people, he wouldn't be a yonko. The marines wouldn't miss the opportunity to defeat him at Marineford. Instead they were all "nah...we didnt' sign up for this shit".

And lol at Zoro training everything but his sword skills. "Hey Mr Mihawk, can you train me in...weightlifting?" What do you think he did the entire time skip?

How about when he trained himself to cut steel, was that a strength feat, or was it a skill feat?

Real question...do you even like the character of Zoro? because you seem to not know much about him...

Is Zoro trying to be the best swordsman, or is he trying to be the strongest guy who happens to carry a sword?

His crew makes him a Yonko, without his crew he would be a warlord, just like Mihawk because no one is a Yonko by himself alone.
If Shanks came alone without his crew, he would have been stomped in MF. His crew is very good, "the impenetrable crew" in case you forgot, 3 big names aside from Shanks, Beckman with huge hype, comparable to Shanks himself.

What did Mihawk teach him? Haki, lol.
His skill didnt change at all, he is still using the same skills, he is only increasing physical strength and improving haki.

Dont test me or I'll fight fire with fire and Luffy fans wont like it.
I am trying my best here to make you guys see reason and that Mihawk being stronger than Shanks(in 1vs1) changes nothing except Shanks/Luffy fans not liking it, for whatever reason.

"you want me to teach you the sword so that one day you can take my head?"

And then he proceeded to not teach him the sword for 2 years.

Seriously...do you even like Zoro? Your views of him are bizarre and not actually based on what characters say and do in the manga.

Me not thinking Shanks is weaker than Mihawk has nothing to do with "fandom" of certain characters. It's about logic and the story as it is actually written. Not on how i squint at an SBS, or at a color spread from before the crew was fully formed, or an unreleased novel not even written by Oda. I think Shanks is stronger because the manga has been clear that a Yonko and their crew is something the WG needs the entire marine forces + the Warlords to counter. And a single warlord being stronger than a Yonko, the Yonko with the smallest crew, breaks that.

Proceeds to tell him about Haki, lol. You can see it on panel.
His skills remained the same, he is using exactly the same moves as pre-TS.
Did you not notice that?

Sure nik. He taught him some haki and no sword skills. I mean, let's just ignore everything because you are desperate here...this is getting sad.

Do you have any proof he’s stronger?

I am desperate? Ok, show me the skills Mihawk taught to Zoro.
I am going to start playing the tunes you won't like, simply because you cannot admit the obvious.

Do you have any proof he’s stronger?
Having WSS title?

We also have seen Zoro use new techniques, not that this should even be in doubt...

Toro Samon (used vs Hawkins in Wano)
Santoryu Ogi: Rokudo no Tsuji (used against Kraken)

(and stop the pathetic threats...if you have something to say, say it! I'm not afraid of what you will say about any character. Knowing you it will come off the back of a One Piece cereal box or some other nonsense).

I mean, there’s nothing to suggest that title makes him stronger. The WSS isn’t even mentioned in the power structure of the world. If it’s just titles, Yonko is more impressive.

Old Move - Nigiri Toro , one new word added to it like to almost any other move.
Santoryu Ogi: Rokudo no Tsuji (used against Kraken)
One new move for 2 years, huh? It's not even an overly impressive move...

Ok, here it goes.
Zoro vs Shanks will happen, there is no other way to prove it to you guys.
You know why Beckman is hyped up to be Shanks' equal? So Luffy fans wont feel bad when Zoro takes on Shanks.

The title itself is world's STRONGEST swordsman, the title itself says that he is stronger. How hard can it be to understand such a simple thing?
WSS isnt mentioned in power structure because he is a single individual, Yonkos are far bigger threat because they have numbers, something WSS doesnt.
Remove the crews of any Yonko and they are no different than WSS when it comes to threat.

Lol "i'm going to show you, you better watch out" turns into you writing fanfiction about Zoro vs Shanks? Damn, i've been owened!

Zoro will take on Shanks just like he took on Lucci or Doflamingo or *insert literally every end boss of an arc*. Suddenly Zoro is going to face a Yonko, one who Luffy idolizes no less? :sarc:sarc:sarc

That's what you were "holding back on" saying? Lol

I also like how "ok, so he has one new move...but it's lame anyway". He asked to be trained by the greatest swordsman, you don't think he was actually trained in actual swordsmanship? I can't even with this argument...it's so dumb.

Glad you like my fanfiction because it will stay until you learn who is the stronger between Shanks and Mihawk. :teehee
We know Luffy cant fight swordsmen and Beckman is Shanks' equal anyway so it's not really a loss for Luffy by taking on Beckman.
Zoro: If it's swords, I am game. You think Zoro would give up a swordsman to Luffy? Never.

I knew perfectly fine about that single new move, what is that in Zoro's pool of abilities? A drop in an ocean? And my argument is dumb...
Physical strength and haki is the only thing changing about Zoro, his skill set remains the same + one new move.
The title is again, world's STRONGEST swordsman, not world's SKILLEST swordsman.

Also, Mihawk's vivre card says that he is waiting for someone to surpass Shanks.
What better way of surpassing Shanks than surpassing Shanks by beating Shanks?
Zoro vs Shanks all the way.

I don't think the plot will allow Zoro to challenge Shanks. Either Luffy challenges him or something happens plotwise and no Strawhat does. However, Zoro shouldn't worry about that since he will challenge a stronger swordsman.

Who will Zoro take on in Shanks crew, if not Shanks?
How will Luffy fight Shanks when he is unable to fight swordsmen?

I had forgotten his vibre card says that. Mihawk is waiting for someone to surpass Shanks because then there will be someone worthy of going all out against.
That's one more reasoning for Mihawk's position as the strongest swordsman.

Anyway, I'll say something that is not directed at you but in general:
I've noticed some power debates here turn rather unhealthy rather quickly. Half the people here seems like they can't accept different opinions and this at times looks more like a personal argument, ignoring certain points and ridiculing certain others, rather than a debate about fictional characters.

I won't say much more on the topic of Mihawk, but so far my opinion hasn't budged.

Who will Zoro take on in Shanks crew, if not Shanks?
How will Luffy fight Shanks when he is unable to fight swordsmen?
Shanks wouldn't fight Luffy to the death so if they ever fight it would be a friendly bout. So Shanks wouldn't seriously cut Luffy up. Either that or by that time Luffy's haki allows him to perfectly dodge or deflect his blade. Who knows.

About Zoro's match... no idea. I'd say Ben because of his position. Yasopp is certainly reserved for Usopp (or for Van Augur as a way to hype him as a villain). And Lucky... I don't know about that one.

You couldnt be more right. You saw through it very well.

Why would Zoro give up on the swordsman when the purpose of his being is to beat strong swordsmen?
The fight needs to be friendly bout just to babysit Luffy... Just switch opponents and go all out without problems.
If RHP and SHs fight, there is no way Zoro is passing on the opportunity to have a piece of Shanks.
He would have a falling out with Luffy before that happens. He told him, if he does anything to affect his dream he would have him commit seppuku to say he is sorry.

Luffy fans wont like it... Don't worry @nik87 , we don't need to try and make anything about Luffy when Oda is doing it for us :3c
Well, I would like to see that optimism when Zoro vs Shanks happens and Luffy takes on Beckman instead. :catshrug

I mean sure, Shanks has been very concerned with Zoros bounty pic. I remember last time we saw Shanks he said he will be seeing Zoro soon. Matter of fact, didn't Mihawk take Zoro's bounty to show Shanks the person who is going to challenge him?

When you are reduced to arguing a future hypothetical match that 100% won't happen to "hype" your character, you've lost the battle before you even entered the ring.

the odds of any "real" fight between the SH's and the Red Hair pirates are pretty low. At best, we'll get a fun skirmish. And in that, i hate to break it to everyone, Luffy will go up against his idol Shanks. Lol, the idea that it would be anything different just shows that you aren't reading the actual manga...or any story to be honest.

"So, I'm going to create this guy for the main character to idolize from day 1. I'm going to build that relationship, reference it. And then, I'll have the 2 crews finally meet and have a fun little skirmish when they do. Nothing serious, they aren't real enemies. but...the guy the main character idolizes has a sword, so I guess he won't face off against he main character. I'll just have him face the other guy, the one with guns instead".

Once again, we are lucky it's Oda writing this and not someone like Nik. This is just terrible story writing.

If there are any fights, it will have 2 for sure minor battles to show off. Luffy vs Shanks, and Usopp vs Yasopp. Whether Beckham fights Zoro and Sanji fights Lucky or not is up in the air. But...I mean...do you even want people to take you remotely seriously? Lol.

I'm wondering how things will play out. I mean, Luffy has to see Shanks, so I think they'll have to meet, both crews there, and I can see a skirmish. But I can also see BB's crew taking Shanks and his crew out to build more hype for them. But even saying that...Luffy has to meet him again, so I do think Luffy and Shanks will have that friendly clash, where Shanks can tell him that the Straw Hat is his, keep it.

I mean, there’s nothing to suggest that title makes him stronger. The WSS isn’t even mentioned in the power structure of the world. If it’s just titles, Yonko is more impressive.
We saw WSS being stopped easily by YCs like Jozu and Vista and then later by Crocodile while Yonko lvl like Whitebeard and Kaido with theit titles easily defeated YCs with one-shot hits or less effort unlike Mihawk. Pretty sure Oda already shown notion on where Mihawk stands. He is strong, but he is no Admiral or Yonko lvl threat. Best bet you can say he stronger than YCs, but that putting if we haven't seen full power on their side either as they could be stronger or equal to him.
