Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

None of the canceled started in the top 5 and Moriking isn't any dead yet.
they started yes, I remember.
Moriking does not die, but it is very difficult to recover, it would take a miracle.

A canceled manga is not always a bad manga.
even you must have manga you liked and ended up being canceled.
It's maybe not bad to you. But in my and many people minds, it is bona fide work of failure.
I almost feel bad for you being a TPGW faithful till the bitter end.

No, both Saiyuki and Yui started at 6th and Mitama at 7th.
Still, they are good positions.

Mitama, started at 7th, but he has been at 4th a few times afterwards.

He has already been in better positions than Yozakura, even selling little.

Yozakura started in 5th and is going over 1 year of serialization

you did not understand.

I know that Yozakura Family started in 5th and Mitama in 7th

I'm talking about it later, we always saw mitama being placed in better positions than Yozakura.

I can see Agravity Boys and Moriking getting at least 3 volumes before they get axed by the 4th's release. That seems to be the life for gag series lately, and it gives them a good enough chance to make an impression, I'd think.

People have a too romantic view on art, Like people think that just because something is unique or new that it have to be good. I saw S8 and Ghostwriter fan keep saying it good because they are unique compare to other stuffs on Jump, it not ecchi/gag/standard battle shounen, how mature they are and Jump readers are kids that can't appreciate that. Originality is overrated, it's the execution that matter.
I think it's also show how limited those people about the medium. Space sci-fi and time travel in manga are not even that rare.
It's always frustrated me when the arguement "Japan don't like sci-fi" is used to defend S8.
We already have a decent time travel in Jump+/manga+.

This discussion about Ghostwriter being a unique case because it stood out and was fairly popular in the west reminds me of another flop that was kinda a unique case imo, which is David-kun.

I think David-kun was also a fairly unique case in the sense that it gained a decent following in the west for a new comedy manga in Jump, but failed to gain readers in Japan. The people that read it also praised it very highly and I don't remember the series being criticized a lot by western readers. IMO it was generally a very well written comedy manga and is still to this day my favourite series that got cancelled.

Though I think the main reason it failed to gain popularity in Japan wasn't because it was badly written. It was mainly because it was full of western art and cultural references, that most Japanese readers probably never heard of. The only Japanese references it had, that I can think of, were references of other Jump manga. It even included western references that I had never even heard of before. So I can only imagine how hard it must've been to understand the references as the average Japanese reader who probably never heard of most of the references.

I think it had a lot of potential nonetheless because similar to Gintama, the mangaka created a universe where he could do whatever he wanted and get away with it. I also think if it included more references to Japanese culture, history and art, it could've gained some popularity in Japan. Though I might also be completely wrong with that assumption.
Well, first, reference is not humour. Gintama had shit load of references but it also parodied them. A more recent case is Roboco. Title drop is not humour. Underware with Jump title on it isn't humour. But joke about the tameness of Ayakashi, that's legit humour.
Despite liking it, all I can recall about David are weak piss joke, pervy joke, sometimes Jojo poses referencing arts.

The fact that Yozakura Family started in 5th place does not take away the fact that now a manga starts in 4th place has become irrelevant.
The manga needs to start well, maintain itself well and sell well. Without it all, it is canceled.

Stivie, you have nothing than 1 series as a example in a ocean of other series that counter your example, so far Ayakashi and Magu-chan are placing well and Moriking has only 2 bad positions since it started being ranked. 1 case out of other dozen doesn't make it a fact.

I mean I agree with his point. Mitama placed well at times and got a few color pages, but didn’t maintain it, had poor sales, and got axed.
Moriking also placed well, but started selling bad as well.
This doesn’t necessarily mean the series WILL get axed. But we have no reason to believe it’s safe.

Iirc even Straighten Up got the same award that UxU won, and that also had a early end/ax(?).

The first week placements doesn’t really mean much when it comes to these new series so far. We have to wait to see it it’s consistent and if they sell well

His point is that starting in the top 5 doesn't mean anything, when it do mean a lot,, Sesuji wo Pin just adds to the point, it started great in the toc so it got other covers, color pages, a award and 2 years of serialization with a satisfying end, this is already more than the majority of newbies on Jump.

It’s a good thing to start in the top 5. But I wouldn’t say that means the series is definitely going be a mainstay in the magazine, and we’ll have to see how everything holds up.

If all 4 of these new series gets a top 5 ranks I highly doubt anyone actually expects all 4 to not get axed and get high sales. Especially when we have 3 new series coming again as well

And no one is saying it definitely going to be a hit but that you can expect at least to run longer than your average newbie starting in the middle to bottom since a series being placed so high at first means the series got many magazine readers hooked instantly instead of just not caring about (buy volume is a different talk)

I don't see why 4 of them couldn't just be successful and keep published in the magazine, you only need the readers to like it, Roboco is a case where i can see only needing to be enjoyed by the magazine readers, i doubt Jump expect this to sell anything like 20/30k.

I still can’t forgive Red Sprite for wasting its potentially cool airship-focused concept. I always hoped we could get another new series that focuses on airships but has a much better premise.

I know this is late and already was commented days ago but I havent check the thread for some weeks because of the whole situation but Im glad that Shiro made such great statement and makes me hopeful that she can be able to overcome all this, its also nice that Jump is taking this seriously and keep supporting her, she is really talented and deserves to be once again in the magazine. Sorry for interrupting the discussion.

TPGW's reception is similar to David-kun's for sure in the west. I did remember TPGW was starting to pick up before I dropped it

I think Beast children was the "recent" series I was sad about it getting axed. I would like to see a rugby series at some point again.

Fuck this wait lol. Then again these past months flew by so quickly so the wait shouldn't be that bad.

They took so long to make the announcement but at least we have a period already. Maybe (hpefully) Gotouge will draw a special art for the top 10.

Maybe Black Clover's and Dr. Stone's popularity polls will be announced by then too since they were also held offline and COVID-19 happened. After that we should get My Hero Academia's popularity poll in December as usual.
