I personally feel like Jump hasn’t been pressuring mangaka to extend the series past when they wish to end them in recent years. I’d imagine Horikoshi will be allowed to end the series where ever he feels like ending it.

As Tirakai said, we’ll have a better idea after this arc finishes. But

(Series spoilers)
plot elements have been moving pretty fast lately. Dabi revealed himself. Hawk’s Backstory has been revealed. Deku has 4 of his 7 powers. 2 of them he learned within the last 15 chapters or so. Bakugo’s development seems to have come full circle. Right now, it seems there’s only a few things left that hasn’t been unveiled in the plot yet that’s necessary. Unless Shigaraki gathers together like 10 new league members or something, and we have get a whole new group of characters on both sides who need character arcs to go through, I can honestly see everything being wrapped up in a little over 100 chapters, and ending in the early 400s.
I’m personally a little iffy on that statement. Sure, they’re definitely more lenient about letting series end as they should, but I think they would find it a shame if the series didn’t at least reach a major milestone in length. I personally think they’ll try and end it just a little past its 500th chapter. Around 515ish sounds like a good spot for me.

I do think Horikoshi genuinely wants to reach that mark at least.

396 chapters are quite a lot for a manga of the Jump, but I would say that at least 400 if it will make them, perhaps as many as those of Haykyu

And why on earth? Slam Dunk and Kimetsu, two of Jump's best-selling manga, lasted less than Hero ....

Keep in mind he didn’t even want the series to go past 30volumes. It does sound like the series has gone on longer than he intended, but not THAT much further.

He even felt iffy when Oda told him to push for a 10 year run. Milestones get celebrated anyway. However, jut under 10 years seems like it was Horikoshi’s intended length to begin with

TPN LA: Day 2: $1.4m (¥144.6m, 111k adm.)

Day 1: $820k (84,7m¥, 65-70k adm.)

$2.2m so far. I wonder how it'll end up.

Yeah, I was more taking reference from his interview with Oda, and I always figured that for as iffy he thinks about that number of years, he could always change his mind and decide to go for it. Who knows? I’ll even be willing to bet on it.

I do see where he’d be coming from if he wants to end it under 10 years though. MHA more or less has reached its peak, so I can see him deciding to end it in less than 10 years because the series won’t grow any further even if he tried to push for that number.

Does anybody have the actual transcription of Horikoshi's message?

It’s hard to find the quote now, because whenever you search “Horikoshi 25%” or “MHA 25% done” you only get results like “MHA volume 25” or “Deku One For all 20%”.

But around volume 9 Horikoshi stayed the series was around the 25% point in an interview. Sure, things have probably changed, and he did so he overestimated how long some arcs would be in his interview with Oda, so it’ll go past his initial 30 Volume estimation.

However, in that interview he stated the Sports Festival ran longer than anticipated. And he made the 25% estimate long after the Sports Festival. So if we were take this estimate somewhat serious around volume 20ish would probably be what he considers the 50% point, meaning we’d be at around 75%ish point now.

Again, we have to wait in see, but I reeeeeally don’t think Horikoshi wants the series to run as long as people think he plans.

I’m pretty sure the 25% thing was stated around the end of Kamino. So if we take that as a reference, I’m like 99% sure we’re at 50% right now.

Kamino ended at chapter 95, so that was quite some time ago now, and we’re over triple that amount of chapters now

I kind of take it to mean that each “Act” will last 200 or so chapters from that point on. That’s why I think we’re only at 50%. Horikoshi probably tried to reach the 100-chapter mark for the Prologue (and he sort of did), and then decided midway the current Act should reach 200. The next phase will probably reach just around 220-250ish. Which would be 505-510ish.

But I think we should quit now though, lest we derail the thread any further.

Pretty sure it was that he thought it would be 30 volumes but realised he can't fit the whole story in such a short time...

I always take these comments with a grain of salt. I mean Oda originally wanted to finish One Piece within five years.

It just means they don't realise how long it will take to fit thier initial story plan until they start working on it

Horikoshi said on Jump Festa that MHA is "heading toward its conclusion" 🤨

cant imagine theres much else the manga can do at this point beyond training arcs before going up against the big bad again. Didn't really leavehimself a world like BLack Clover where tons of new entitites can be introduced as our teenage heroes trying to become the wizard king.

I obvious know it's gonna be longer than that. But the point is, he repeatedly said on multiple occasions that he doesn't want the series to be all that long. He didn't even like the idea of the series running for 10 Years when Oda asked him to.
He obviously can't estimate how long a series is going to be for a long running series. But it seems clear that he doesn't want to be doing this series for much longer. It's volume count will clearly at least be in the late 30s or early 40s. But it's unlikely that it'll extend to like 50-60 volumes when his original estimate was 30.

People often use Oda as the benchmark of mangaka overly estimating how long their series, but he's sort of anomaly. I'd imagine most don't want to spend 10+ onwards to 20 years working on a single weekly series

''I think perhaps it will be heading towards its conclusion soon'' is such an unsure statement coming from the author. But then again Horikoshi always talks like this.
