I’ve been thinking about this and I think ‘Joy Boy’ is a code, or title, that is passed down, or more likely a reincarnated spirit (not like a ghost). I think it is reincarnated in every generation, with Gol D Roger being the previous, and Luffy being the new one. I think their penchant for smiling is the joy they feel about every aspect of life, even the potential for eminent death. It may be that all D holders (lol! The initial, not the organ 😉) are potential Joy Boy’s or are all to be considered Joy Boy. Kind of a loose theory, but, as always, I’m open for debate and discussion!

Joyboy is Luffy, this was made clear during the fishmens island arc.

Roger is a pevious Joyboy incarnation.

Luffy Awakened Shirahoshi's powers fully, just as the fishmen island legend stated that Joyboy was born with the power to guide Shirahoshi.

Luffy( Joyboy) and Shirahoshi(Poseidon) are supposed to exist at the same time for One Piece project to be completed.

So you agree 😊

I just looked it up and Roger died 5 years before Luffy was born, which holds up with a reincarnation. Also it would explain all of he similarities between the two!

I don't think Roger is the previous since he said he wished he had met Joy Boy. I think Luffy carries it on though, just like Shirahosi does as you say. Roger knew he wasn't the one, and that the one who carried Joy Boy's will would be born soon to shake up the world (and Oden knew this which is why he told Toki to send them 20 years in the future when someone could defeat Kaido).

I previously discussed and shared my thoughts about Joy Boy when I reread ch967:

This chapter made me think of Joy Boy, not only for his signficance in the story and his importance to Fishman Island but also as it relates to the Ancient Kingdom and One Piece (the treasure). I, myself had never thought too much about him and the part he plays in the story but considering it's confirmed in this chapter that the One Piece treasure was left by him, I wonder if he was some sort of royalty within that kingdom?

I imagine his relationship with the past Poseidon/Mermaid Princess to be what we saw with Luffy and Shirahoshi but grander, in that he not only wanted to take her to the surface but made a promise to bring the whole island with him.

My interpretation is that during the Void Century he realised that it was still far too dangerous for that to happen, so the promise was broken, combined with the ongoing war that led to the destruction of his country; he could only leave a message that another would come to fulfill what he had failed to do.

But was he psychic and could look into the future? a devil fruit (Toki comes to mind)? or some other understaning of fate?

It could also be that while he returned to leave this message on the poneglyph for the people of Fishman Island, that he (maybe with others to help) also travelled to various islands of trusted comrades and left the poneglyph in order not only preserve a piece of their kingdom but set in place a cycle of events that would bring about the dissolution of their enemy and their re-establishment.

With that in mind, there most certainly must've been a few who came close before Roger (hence the will of D) but things didn't align for them (being able to decypher the poneglyph, having poseidon being born within that era, etc). If we remember Rayleigh even said that they were too soon, so Poseidon is definitely a key in that regard.

yea, i think that holds and adds up.... but i still wish the story takes the direction where the message is still open for everyone and can change hands... like for instance, BB can be interpreted as well, although he was already born then.

Does Law qualify? He seems to care the most about the will of D than any other oerson with the D name

also, being my goto japanese translator, is the japanese text of Roger interpretable to any other existing character?

It cannot change hands, since Luffy's special power to attract allies is what he uses to guude Shiarahoshi.

That power is unique and a special ability that Luffy( As an Ancient King) has.

Which text? The “I left it in one piece” thing?

I think Joy Boy is the original owner of the straw hat and I think the big straw hat in Mary Geoise is the one piece.
The hat represents the map of the OP world with the big red band being the red line that separates all the seas.
The hat in the frozen room is the one piece that will make the red line crumble (or reverse reverse mountain) and join up all the oceans into all blue as well as raise FI to the surface.
During the great war the seas were divided, JB knows this and wants to reverse (mountain) this and uses the straw hat as a memento which is given to successors who are deemed worthy to continue his work.

I'm about .1% sure this is accurate

I think Joy Boy definitely has connections to the "will of D" but we know from Whitebeard that Blackbeard isn't one of the ones Roger was waiting to come along. Roger and Whitebeard met after he had separated from his crew and he knows the story and meaning behind the initial "D".

Law might also have the name but the way that he sees the name D is similar in my mind to Ace just trying to find meaning to his life. If I'm honest, I don't think Law is all that interested in being Pirate King; most definitely not as much as Luffy or Kidd but he's interested in knowledge and information. I think knowing the story and purpose of his name is what he's ultimately after.

Which japenese text are you talking about by the way?

We know that the hat isn't One Piece and that the treasure is indeed real and can be found in Laugh Tale. BUT I do like the idea that the original owner of the Straw Hat was Joy Boy. That would be an interesting connection to Roger who also had a similar straw hat and would raise the question as to where he got his from and if there's any special meaning to it before he got it.

If indeed Joy Boy was the owner of the hat, what then happened to him? Could it be....? :hmm

I think Joy Boy isn't a title, but an actual person with that name. But then again, if he referred to the princess as Poseidon, then maybe Joy Boy is a code word, and the "joy" part seems to be on par with Roger and Luffy, and their smiling even in the face of death.

The strange thing is that Luffy has both the symbols of Joy Boy (pagan messiah) and Im (Buddha, Storm God)...

What I have considered as of lately is that Luffy is NOT the actual descendant of Joy Boy.

The color of Joy is yellow, the color of the Sun.

This point to the Gol D. bloodline and Roger actually being right about his son.

It is Ace who learned how to make...

How to make Strawhats.

Luffy, and the Monkey D. bloodline on the other hands are the descendants of Im. This would be in line with what the Monkey King is all about. Immortality and the throne of the Jade Emperor.

Of course the twist is that Luffy fulfills the prophecy anyways and Ace is dead.

Hm...

Luffy is joyboy, and Wano needs to be opened for when Luffy returns from Laughtale.

Luffy was born with the ability to control/guide Shirahoshi, which is why she awakened her power to save Luffy.

Luffy travels on the thousand sunny. His flower is a sunflower.

Joyboy's power was shown in chapter 949. Also during marineford, the power to make allies out of anyone.

Chapter 626, 647, 649, 968 & 972 confirm that.

Oda has also pointed to Luffy being Joyboy

There must be a reason why the next Pirate King will "turn the world apart" with the One Piece and the fact that the entrance of the Grand Line is called Reverse Mountain. It can’t be a coincidence when Oda created meaningful island names such as Elbaf, Logue Town, Lodestar, Laugh Tale.

This might be the day Luffy destroys Fishman Island...as prophecized. Everyone will use Noah to get to the top and Joyboy's will will be somewhat fulfilled.

I think it's because Roger's hoping his successor will do what he didn't have the time to do, reveal what happened during the Void Century and change the world related to that, like possibly getting rid of the WG or changing it in a way that actually serves people instead of the Tenryuubito.

Didn't Nami said that it was called Reverse Mountain because the direction of water flow is reversed compared with the usual norm? (Water should move from a higher place to a lower one, yet in the Reverse Mountain it's vice-versa)
