As far as I’m concerned Joyboy isn’t someone who will suddenly appear in this timeline or some kind of title but it’s the nickname of someone who lived during the void century and was most likely a D and probably was what Imu is to the world government, something like the king of the D clan the one who led the D clan and their allies against Imu and the 20 kingdoms (yes, I believe that Imu is 800 + years old) and the 5 elders are probably from the void century too. We know that time travel exists, we know that Law’s ability can grant eternal life, so why not?

Also, besides Roger’s crew the only people who seems aware of the true history of the world and the meaning of D and are hell bent on crushing anyone who gets close to that truth (like they did with Ohara) are the elders and by extension Imu since the truth would mean the end of the world government , knowing how corrupt and ruthless the world government can be, I have no doubt that whatever they did to take over the world was horrible and would threaten their authority if it were known.

What has been established so far in the story is people don’t die when they “die” but when they are forgotten but many characters especially the Ds their will never dies and gets carried on through time. The speech Whitebeard gave before his death put it perfectly, and we know from fishmen island arc that someone will appear to fulfill Joyboy’s promise and that someone is Luffy. The promise to return fishmen to the surface so they live freely under the sun. I think that what Roger learned is that the one who will challenge the world carrying hundreds of years of history on his back as Whitebeard put it, is a D and in this case it’s Luffy. For his belief in freedom, but also for his ability to make allies wherever he goes. He will one day unite the world against Imu and the World government but this time it is the D who will triumph and the world should be free from the tyranny of the world government.

And above all it would make no sense whatsoever for the man who will finally lead the world to the dawn to appear after 1000 chapters. We will know who Joyboy was when we finally reach Laugh Tale but I really think he led the Ds against Imu and the world government and the ponegylphs are his legacy for the descendants of the D clan to find the truth and do what’s right. That’s also why the elders are often talking about the Ds why Imu was holding Blackbeard and Luffy’s posters. They know that the people who have the D initial are the descendants of the ancient kingdom and they know that as long as there Ds , a threat remains.

Dunno, every time we think there's something complex or unpredictable behind what Oda does, the answer's usually simple.
I agree. Ever since the revelations that humans did nothing to Hody Jones after so many people proposed reasonable theories, I was really disappointed and decided to not think too much about most mysteries in One Piece anymore...

I think it’s both. I think Joy Boy was a real person, but the “Joy Boy” people are waiting for is a “reincarnation in spirit”. Someone that has the same demeanor and personality type. I agree that Imu is very likely from the void century, along with the 5 stars. There’s evidence that the 5 stars don’t age, and if they don’t, it’s highly unlikely that the guy above them does. Now, wether that comes from the “eternal youth” surgery or Jewellry Bonnie’s fruit, is up in the air. But I could easily see it as either, though the fact that they are desperate to get Bonney back, suggests to me that she is the source of their youth. The 5 stars at least…

There so desperately needs to be a Revolutionary/Bonnie/Marijoise centric arc. Right now. In place of the crap we're getting. It need only be another 10 or maybe 20 chapters. But it would do so much good for the story. Alas, no.

Because thus far the 5 Elder Stars/Imu is a FAR more interesting scenario what with Sabo and other characters mixed in, like Kuma. And instead we got me narrating it for you in a vague summary. Sorry about that! But you can thank me for blabbin' it! Oda wasn't even planning to tell y'all anything at all, period! Zehahahah.

Everything going on in regards to the world government and the void century is a large portion of what keeps me reading. I gotta say, if they devoted an entire arc to it, and covered all the questions about it? I can‘t really see the manga having the same draw to me. Not saying it’s the only reason I read One Piece, but it is probably 35% of it..

So could this mean that Luffy be closer to being Joy Boy once he defeats Kaido?
