Happy one year anniversary to undead unluck. I remember when people thought the series was going to get axed when it first started but now look at now.

That's quite a surpising number for Phantom Seer (22,524 monthly vs 14,541 4 weeks). This means that the reprints were really necessary. It's had the 3rd biggest newbie release this year. Now let's see if that translates to ToC positions.

Undead Unluck has actually not grown much, if at all, this time around (51,364 vol4 vs 49,432 vol3). It just was really frontloaded, so first impressions hinted at bigger growth. A bit disappointing.

Ayakashi has sold less with its second volume: 67,231 vs vol1's 78,090. Let's see how the trend continues with the next few volumes.

Of course, these are all estimates, so take them with the usual grain of salt.

14k copies only account for its first 2 weeks. There's no data from it onwards aside from some daily ranks that never managed to bring it back to weekly.

Speaking of anniversaries, of the 2020 newcomers who do we expect will all make it to their own first year anniversary? Here's the amount of chapters each would need to reach that point:

Once you lay it out like that it highlights how difficult it will be for most of these series to survive until their own anniversaries, never mind end of the year. Aside from Undead Unluck and Mashle the only ones I've got complete confidence in are Ayakashi Triangle and Me & Roboco.

I reckon there's no way for Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin and High School Family, and even Magu-chan might be tough. Phantom Seer you would think considering the sales for volume 1 but it needs serious improvement in the TOC that 31 more chapters feels like so much considering its current struggle. Feels too early to tell with Build King and Sakamoto Days, however I'd bet both could make it; if BK doesn't then something will have to go seriously wrong between now and then, though it's not impossible, especially if 2021 gives us some early hits.

One thing to consider though is that, because they're all safe for this round, they're all pretty much certain to have another at least 10 chapters due to the next few issues having new series and then a gap until the next batch.

So it'll really depend on how many new series we get I think. WSJ often seem to have a large gap between batches at the start of the year so it's possible that Ayakashi/Magu-chan/Dolphin/Roboco will only need to survive one more batch before hitting their anniversaries, and if that batch is just two series we could see all 4 of them survive.

I don't think they'll prioritise keeping Dolphin over Phantom Seer even with the ToC unless Dolphin v2 grows while Phantom v2 drops but you never know. Not to mention we could still see Build King or Sakamoto flop, they're still too early to tell.

The St&rs pair split up and are doing different works. The author is currently doing Yuukoku no Moriarty in SQ while the artist is doing Shijinsou no Satsujin over at Jump Plus.

Alice and Taiyo author just had a recent one shot promoted, so we’ll probably him them back this year.

Honestly, I think the Magico and Enigma authors have quietly exited the manga industry imo. Both haven’t done anything in years. Unfortunate really.

Magico author did a oneshot on SQ rise in 2018 and he did the art for Rolling Combat light novel before that
Enigma author did Love Dester on Plus, the series went on hiatus for ages because she got pregnant then it came back to finish properly,
she is married to Jaguar author so the 2 of them might be taking care of their kid now

JJK is so impressive. Might end the year at #1 for sales.

I'd really like that to happen but the Kimetsu religion is still too strong in Japan. I'll be really surprised if JJK somehow manages to end the year in 1st place and not in 2nd place.

Not putting a lot of thought onto PS's position right now. It has sold considerably well for a newbie in 2021 and if Nak lets go of it he is a stupid EiC (he is). Nice starting position for SD, meanwhile BK's reception doesn't seem to be that good right now. Sad that both series' first volumes are still months away, only that can give us a better comprehension of their situation in the magazine. And we're finally going into a new arc in JJK, interested to see where it's heading now.

if it get axed but Kento Matsuura comesback quickly, would that be such a bad thing?
