Where do you get the "fifth generation" thing from. This isn't a dig, just curious how the fifth generation could only be stuff from 2019 onward when Jump is over 50 years old.

And to answer the actual question Undead Unluck is hands down my favorite of the series you listed.

It's my way of coupling Jump eras, you have:

  • Early Days: First 15 years of the magazine, mostly unremarkable outside of the crucial hits at the end like Dr Slump and Kinnikuman.
  • Golden Age: Everything form Hokuto no Ken to the end of Slam Dunk, can be split into two halves covering the 80s and 90s.
  • Big Three: Reign of Jump's most iconic trio, climaxing in 2010-2011 with all three hitting their collective peak in popularity.
  • Neo-Jump: Nisekoi to Chainsaw Man. Can be argubly considered the turning point when Jump shifted into the framework we now use.
  • Fifth Gen: What we're at now, after the mass series end of 2020. Still doesn't have a catchy name.

So you have eras of length 15, 12, 15, 8, and indeterminate length. I'd honestly say we're still in the fourth era you mentioned. Using the word "generation" implies that each is born from the last but I don't really see how our current batches are influenced by TPN or Black Clover, for example. I'm aware that isn't exactly how it works but I still don't know what really sets "fifth gen" stories apart from the previous generation (except for, you know, not selling). We barely even have one hit. It just seems premature to start calling it a separate era.

Unless ofc you're talking about the magazine as a whole and not the manga it contains.

So, question, of Jump's "fifth generation" (or current, doesn't really matter), which do you think has been the most impressive?

Current pool:
  • Mission: Yozakura Family
  • Undead Unluck
  • Mashle
  • Ayakashi Triangle
  • Sakamoto Days (Tentative)
  • The Elusive Samurai
  • Witch Watch (Tentative)
  • Blue Box (Tentative)
Impressive by my personal standards

Undead Unluck
Yozakura Family
Sakamoto Days
Blue Box
Mashle
Elusive Samurai
Ayakashi Triangle
Witch Watch

Mashle has honestly fallen for me because the supporting cast aren’t interesting enough to make the fact Mash is never in trouble of losing worthwhile.

But the fourth gen is completely different form whatever we are in now. It was just a short one.

What exactly is completely different...? If you're talking about the state of the magazine as a whole, sure, but the manga being published aren't particularly distinct compared to recent years. The only difference is the lack of hits, which isn't that unusual.

I mean of the eight current series he listed, three of them are by veterans and keep a pretty similar style to their previous works. I wouldn't see what makes AssClass and Sket Dance "third-generation" but TES and WW "fifth-generation", if that's how you're defining it. I see even less difference between Yuuna and AyaTri, and the only thing they have in common is genre.

There's also the fact that three of those eight are also less than twenty chapters each, so it feels a little premature to make any judgments about whether they're "completely different" or not.

I mean, when Nura, Sket Dance, and To Love-Ru are in the same generation as Naruto, Bobobo, and Ichigo 100% but grouping Chainsaw Man and Sakamoto Days is where you the line gets drawn then idk what to say. Like I said, if you're just talking about the broad state of the magazine then it makes sense (the situation has obviously changed from 3-4 years ago), but I really don't think "generation" is the appropriate term in that case.

I would say it's debatable wether the 4th generation is really over. It could be over once MHA, Black Clover, JJK and Dr. Stone end which could be by 2023-2024. We do have a boost in great series with those you claim to be carrying a new generation but we also had such years with 2004 and 2008-2009, though only time will tell.

3. Blue Box

5. Ayakashi Triangle
6. Mashle
7. Mission: Yozakura Family
Dropped: Witch Watch

Aren’t you missing Me & Roboco and High School Family?

Okay well MASHLE and Sakamoto remind me heavily off one another, simple humour that is basically gag with how much its repeated. Sakamoto constantly flexing reminds me of Mash constantly flexing.
so to me MASHLE is just sakamoto with weaker action
and Sakamoto is just MASHLE with weaker humour

The Elusive Samurai and Undead Unluck are pretty unique compared to most jump. But they rather contrast with much time they spend interacting with characters. Undead Unluck has basically no interaction with people and focuses on the action and plot nonstop. Elusive samurai on the otherhand is very slow paced and draws out situations, and has very little big action and plot moments

Yozakura Family is a straightforward shonen with comedy episodes and serious arcs with family ensemble. Nothing amazing but nothing bad

Ayakashi Triangle has gotten more ecchi over time which kinda makes me not really care about it.

Blue Box is nice, Chinatsu isn't that amazing as a female MC but I like Taiki. Its just some solid stuff

Witch Watch reminds me of kaguya with Chika as the mc, and we just got a Kaguya. Nothing bad just sorta there...

Well, this didnt aged very well lol

Yeah the author needs a break, the weekly schedule is already hell on authors but add all the things that the author needed to do when his series got popular(interviews and other things) nd the result isn't pretty for the readers or the author.

Mangaka are not drawing machine and human are a delicate creature.
Let he have a proper rest.
However, there are no break announcements, if there will be in the next one.
