Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

I didn't even address whether Mihawk or Big Mom was stronger. I said Amit wasn't underselling Big Mom and he's not.

Who do you think is stronger? Mihawk or Big Mom.
Big Mom in a fight
Mihawk in a pure swordfight, though I'm not sure if victory means kiling or just disabling.

So what?

One of the giants was skilled with a sword, and the other with an axe. It's clearly a weapon skill mastery feat using a technique from Elbaf and not some brute strength feat.

Arguing it's not solely sword techniques as a way of saying she's not a swordswoman is grasping for straws. Zoro and Mihawk have used knives and Zoro even used santouryu with a scythe.

How strange, in my opinion, you undersell Big Mom's skill with a sword but you oversell Big Mom's other feats.

Going by what you just said: do you believe Mihawk is not even the most skilled person in the world with a sword?

Because unless Mihawk is weaker than Zoro is now, which would be absurd narratively, Mihawk must be capable of piercing Kaido and by extension Big Mom. Starting with just that, Big Mom's greatest feats which are about her durability don't mean much. Just like I don't think they'd mean much if she were to fight Akainu, for example.

I don't believe Big Mom can hold a candle to Mihawk with swordsmanship alone even though I do think she's plenty skilled; other than his title, Mihawk's swordsmanship feats in Marineford showed him as a superior swordsman using only casual moves, so Big Mom's sole advantage in feats in this hypothetical fight must come from her homies.

Big Mom's homies' feats so far can be summarized to great versatility that unfortunately lacks the strength to properly finish of the Supernova. In fact they're all doing pretty great after taking her fire and lightning. The attack with which Big Mom could absolutely one shot Mihawk in my opinion is the one she used to finish off Ulti. However, I don't believe Mihawk or any other top tier that's not an arrogant tank like Kaido would stay still and not avoid it (unlike her usual homie-related techniques, it didn't seem to be a homing attack).

So yes, unless Big Mom shows new stuff when going all out, I believe Mihawk is likely to be the victor if they were to fight. However, we have also yet to see Mihawk doing anything remotely seriously, and that will also affect my opinion in the future when it happens.

If this is underselling Big Mom to you, so be it, I'm just going by what I see. However, you shouldn't deny Big Mom's sword skills randomly, or you'd be the one underselling her.
I guess that depends on if Mihawk has Enma or not.

All the other things you said was basically a rehash of everything you've already stated. To undersell her sword skill is to undersell her strength and no one is doing that.

Just like no one that I know of is underselling Mihawk's strength or swordsmanship.

But if your putting Big Mom side by side and are still saying Mihawk beats her. Given her feats.. that's just nonsense.

I think Mihawk could disable her before killing her.

Quite possible, especially if her sword is breakable. How would he be able to kill her though, or incapacitate her?

He can fight her until she gets hungry and then prevent her from eating... then when she goes into her crazed form he can do damage. Boom, Mihawk wins... that's giving alot to Mihawk however
I doubt he could outlast Big Mom's strongest attacks before she gets hungry.

Hr hasn't had a real challenge in decades apparently so I doubt he can even fight a fellow top tier equally anymore.

I think Zoro is closer to him than most people realize

Ah, yes, a comment about Enma, don't miss your chance to undersell Zoro too.

However, who needs Enma? Mihawk wields the sword that's supposed to be the strongest blade in the world, get that Enma trinket out of Mihawk's face.

All the other things you said was basically a rehash of everything you've already stated. To undersell her sword skill is to undersell her strength and no one is doing that.
AmitDS literally did and I quoted the exact moment in which he did.

Just last chapter you claimed Zoro has reached Mihawk's cutting power (as some sort of fact) and now you mentioned Mihawk needing Enma to replicate Zoro's sword feat so I'm pretty sure you can think of someone who undersells Mihawk regularly.

Given her feats, she would lose unless she has more to show when she finally fights seriously. She's currently vastly below Kaido featwise other than her durability and her durability means very little in this particular case, so my mind is set for now.

It's okay if you consider it to be bullshit, you're entitled to disagreeing.

Neither had Kaido had a challenge since Oden by his own admission. Such a weakling he has become now, eh.

Well, I see how you'd think I'm underselling Big Mom when you undersell Mihawk so, so badly. There's no point to me participating in the discussion further for now.

I wonder if Kotaku Yoru drains haki and unleashes attacks with more cutting power... we will just have to wait and see.

And you say...

"She would lose unless she has more to show"

Coming from someone who just said he hasn't seen Mihawk be serious yet. How are you so confident he is stronger then?

And with Enma Zoro does have cutting power equivelant to Mihawk. Once he makes that power his own I don't think he needs much more to reach Mihawk.

Yet now I'm underselling Zoro? If funny that the Zoro/Mihawk fans think claiming Zoro is close to Mihawk is an insult when we are so close to the end of One Piece. Enma does increase Zoro's cutting power that's a fact. Zoro doesn't need much more to beat Mihawk... that's also a fact.

Bruh how am I the one underselling Zoro? :emocat

Me: Mihawk is strong but can't beat a Yonko

You: You undersell Mihawk so so badly

Lol what? You don't need to be stronger than a Yonko to be considered strong. I think Mihaek is the strongest Non-Yonko combatant in the Manga. But sure. I'm underselling him

I'm not sure if that's enough as she was still causing damage and was only stopped by cake. I don't know if he's never had a real challenger in decades though, he might have. And even if not, he can still train to keep up his power.

You really are underselling Big Mom because you're saying she's not a swordswoman and you're basing her sword techniques on just her brute strength, which is absurd (for example Luffy can't deliver any sword technique despite his vastly superhuman strength). Ikoku is a sword skill, and a powerful one at that.
That's a false equivalency because Luffy actually doesn't know how to use a sword. King does and isn't a swordsman so Big Mom can't be like King why? How can Ikkoku be exclusively a sword skill when its basis 'Hakoku' is used with an axe and Hakai can be used with Kaido's Kanabo; Ikkoku means spear of Elbaf because it has nothing to do with the weapon, it deals with the brute force behind the swing and the air pressure blasting forward.

In my post you chose to quote where I said she's a swordswoman I was making no implications about her and Mihawk; I was simply stating a fact: she's one. All this about being "pure swordsmen" or whatever are just fan talks. I get that you want Big Mom to be stronger than Mihawk, but you must differentiate between arguing whether Mihawk is stronger than any swordsman no matter what additional skills they have and arguing if Big Mom is a swordswoman, because she is one.
Your post was 2 lines literally calling her a swordswoman. Totally not because of an agenda. And you were making implications about her and Mihawk because the entire conversation with others was about Mihawk and swordsmen on page 538 of this thread lol. Everything is here for everyone to see.

And I actually don't mind Mihawk being =/> Big Mom, I just find it funny how people are prematurely and automatically saying 1) He is stronger 2) Because she uses a sword and everyone who uses a sword is below him. You fool no one. You guys need her to be a swordswoman along with Shanks so you can say Mihawk's title puts him above, not only them, but other emperors who they equal i.e. Kaido and BB.

In other posts I have already said why Big Mom's and King's boats are very different, and it's not because "King knows how to throw a punch, omg, then he can't be a swordsman", that's ridiculous. King's not a swordsman because he himself said so: he has no need for styles and techniques, hence he's not a swordsman, just a brawler that carries a sword. Big Mom has not discarded techniques. She's more than only a swordswoman? Yes, but she's one.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Also:
Lol moving the goal post? So Big Mom doesn't punch, grab, strangle, smash, hit, block etc. without her sword? Is that what you're saying. How is what she did any different from what King did? The mental gymnastics is alarming. You are actually trying to make a convenient and contrived criterion to differentiate the circumstances between Big Mom & King, so you can explain away how this chapter debunks this universal headcanon that Mihawk > every character because most characters either use a sword or are tied with people who use them.

How can anyone say she's a swordswoman especially after Zoro's and King's conversation when looking back at all of these feats:

I must be reading this page wrong.

Yes, I do. I have never, ever disrespected her or her strength. My belief of Mihawk's strength doesn't imply disrespecting any other character.

You're not standing up for her from a place of caring or consideration, you're doing it to promote and perpetuate a false narrative in the wake of this 'stunning' chapter 1023 where the 'swordsman = using a sword at any time' argument has been laid to rest by Oda and Zoro themselves. Using a sword =/= a swordsman in One Piece. Thank you Oda.

Bottom line: Big Mom is not a swordsman & King and Zoro this chapter just reinforced that since she doesn't use one style
--- Double Post Merged, ---

Kizaru and Whitebeard don't appear to be (Whitebeard's weapon isn't even a sword even if it's a supreme grade blade). In Big Mom's case, however, she's a swordswoman: she's using named sword styles and techniques and she's good at them.

Regardless of Mihawk being stronger or weaker than her, she's one.
See, bringing up Mihawk and Big Mom in the swordsmanship talk would lead one to believe that this has something to do with Mihawk.

@Lobo wants Big Mom to be branded a swordsman so she can be inferior to Mihawk. I bet if Gol D. Roger was alive in today's age, Mihawk/Zolo fans would fight to claim that Roger is a swordsman therefore weaker than Mihawk. The truth, take away that title and Mihawk fans have nothing to go off by. We've seen greater feats from BM that can prove BM > Mihawk, yet Mihawk fans will deny everything. Take away the fact the Mihawk is Zolo's EOS goal to defeat, and Mihawk no longer gets an EOS boost and is now weaker.

These 2 facts make fans believe Mihawk is a god in strength and stronger than admirals and yonko:
1. Worlds Strongest Swordsman
2. He is Zolos End of Series goal to defeat, therefore EOS must be super duper powerful.

Remove these facts and go off by what feats Mihawk has shown on the manga and you will see how much weaker he is rated.

Also off topic, I am disappointed with King's bounty anyone else? Huge disappointment. Disappointed how Oda revealed the bounties. Whatever happened to revealing bounties as he introduced characters. That's one of reasons why I enjoyed reading OP, seeing the introductions of characters, their epithets and bounties shown.

No I didn't undersell her strength. I simply stated the fact that she is not a swordsman by Oda and Zoro's definition since she doesn't rely on swordsmanship for most of her techniques and fights. The fact that you think NOT making her a swordsman is underselling her is telling in so many, different ways. If anything I'm hyping her because her not being a swordsman means she is not linked to Mihawk as people wish for her and the other emperors. 😉

Yes, explicitly saying this has nothing to do with Mihawk would lead you to believe that this has something to do with Mihawk. Yes.

1- I have only said about eight times that I don't need Big Mom to be branded as a swordswoman to claim that she's likely inferior to Mihawk. Of course you'd know that if you had read them instead of just making ad hominem assumptions.

2- Roger was a swordsman, and it's something I have already recently said in this same discussion. We don't know how he relates to Mihawk in strength, but I don't discard the possibility that he was weaker than current Mihawk.

3- You asked "What reasons do people have to believe Mihawk is that strong other than the WSS title" and I made a big ass informative post for you with 4 or 5 other points, yet here you are again, saying that we have nothing to go off by and mentioning me specifically. I see that post was a waste of time and so is this one probably.

Oh come now. We all know what this really is about. We are all adults here and we all know why you are fighting hard for Big Mom to be a swordsman (swordswoman). You putting a little disclaimer which is actually a blaring horn "THIS ISN'T ABOUT MIHAWK BEING STRONGER!" isn't the cover you think it is. LOL

You maybe don't think you NEED it but I'm sure it helps your narrative. I mean I'm sure you think Mihawk > the emperors and that's fine. It's so funny how she has feats against top tiers like Kaido and she has AdCoC but Mihawk who lacks feats is presumed stronger because reasons.

2- Roger was a swordsman, and it's something I have already recently said in this same discussion. We don't know how he relates to Mihawk in strength, but I don't discard the possibility that he was weaker than current Mihawk.
Well actually Mihawk admitted that WB was stronger than him so actually nothing would ever prove that Mihawk > Roger. I can't believe you just told on yourself like this omg. Also, again, thanks to Zoro we actually need more info on Roger to call him a swordsman now, too. xD

Well your points were headcanon so...

Meanwhile you ignore stuff hinting that he's not that strong. Vista says hi. WB says hi. The concept of the emperors say hi.
I mean he can be that strong and I believe he could be and it would make sense but this propensity you guys have to give him the benefit of the doubt and ignore him saying WB was stronger, him drawing with Vista & him not being called 1 of the 4 strongest pirates, is strange IMO. Meanwhile if Big Mom gets tossed somewhere for comic relief/plot convenience to save Luffy or Kaido lets himself gets stabbed to play with people, those feats are held against them. But God forbid we say Mihawk might not be stronger than the 4 emperors.

I'm actually surprised by something: through Ushimaru there's an actual good argument against Mihawk's power level to be made in the newest chapter and no one's used it.

It's all ad hominems, random Enma mentions, stretches of what it means to be a swordsman and even an explicit assumption that Mihawk has lost his former strength for some reason.

Ushimaru, the only swordsman in the manga so far labeled as a daikengou so far in the whole manga other than Ryuuma and Mihawk, and that unless the spoiler is inaccurate may have owned a black blade (unless he was just hardening it in that scene) was just some random man that failed to challenge Kaido together with two daimyo peers.

Though I have always suggested Mihawk being capable of winning 1vs1 against some of the yonkou doesn't mean I believe he could take on their whole crew: I don't think he could. So in that sense, it's normal another daikengou, no matter how impressive, would fail as well unless Kaido accepted a proper duel.

Anyway: Mihawk's vivre card still outweights this argument, but it's interesting nonetheless.

It's on you if you believe everything must revolve around that, not on me. I put the disclaimer exactly because I know you (and others) were already associating the two topics.

Are we all adults here? Then why can't you separate both topics as I tried to do for two pages of discussion? I wouldn't have talked about Mihawk vs Big Mom if Pirate Queen hadn't specifically asked me to talk about that.

if u equalize BM and mihawk's durabillity, strength and speed and restrict the fight to a sword fight mihawk would beat BM every single time. Not sure if mihawk could take Bm otherwise whenever she uses her sword or not. If she uses her sword he can likely block to atleast a high degree. But given BM probab;ly has better durabillity she could proabbly win with her sword at some point due to mihawk being worn down. It's also possible mihawk is just yonko tier anyway at which point she doesn't. But mihawk is porbbaly not yonko tier

Mihawk is extremely strong just not as strong as people think he is, he is not Roger or WB or Kaidos level.
People underestimate the term Yonko so much now. Yonko are not Yonko just because of the size or their crew or territories. No. They are Yonko because of their strength. Take away their crew or territories, do you think that makes them any weaker? Shit, I seriously believe Kaido and BM can destroy their own crews by themselves with some difficulty of course.
Now do you think Mihawk or even an admiral can defeat a whole Yonko crew by themselves? Before you mention Akainu, remember that was not all of the WB pirates only a good portion of them and we did not see the whole outcome of it. Was he able to fend them off for awhile, yes.

I think people need to realize that Mihawk is hyped power wise because of Shanks and not the other way around (depending on Zoro alone doesn't guarantee him emperor leveled power since he could just be above Shiryuu and that'd be it) so there is little chance that he'd be revealed to be above Shanks and thus above the emperors. If that were the case then WB and then Kaido wouldn't be called the strongest pirates with people like Shanks and Big Mom equaling them in fights or via statements. Mihawk would be called the WSS & WSM/WSP. This is why I say he, at best, can be emperor leveled but not above the emperors. And the fact that people believe that Mihawk is possibly above Prime Roger and Prime WB is ridiculous. He himself said the gap between him and WB shrunk at Marineford i.e. implying that WB was stronger than him still even though he was old at that time and possibly sick in that exact moment.

Now do you think Mihawk or even an admiral can defeat a whole Yonko crew by themselves? Before you mention Akainu, remember that was not all of the WB pirates only a good portion of them and we did not see the whole outcome of it. Was he able to fend them off for awhile, yes.
Who? Who underestimates the Yonkou? The discussion around Mihawk is always about how strong or weak he is, not that the Yonkous aren't incredibly powerful.

Let me get something out of the way first that's always funny to me.
On one hand:
- WSS is just some title. WSS means he's just the most skilled or strongest swordsman but people with other skills don't count. Take away these facts and they have NOTHING to go by.
On the next post:
- You better respect the Yonko title, they're the strongest pirates, and that doesn't mean they're the best at piracy, they must be stronger than even any marine and hell, they don't even need their crews to take over the world.

If the Yonkous had no crew, they would still have their incredible individual strength but they wouldn't represent the menace they currently represent for the marines. Imagine Whitebeard walking into Marineford without a crew, do you think he would have lasted as long as he did? I really don't think so.

Now, regarding the hypothesis you proposed: the most elite members of WB's crew (all the commanders) and even additional allied crew captains with their respective crews were present, so it's not like WB's full actual crew would change much (it would have more fodders but less friendly captains).

Around the end of the war, although they were ready to keep fighting, they were pretty much scared at the thought of fighting all vs a badly wounded Akainu, so yes, I think Akainu can solo a Yonko crew just as much as a Yonkou can, and of course so I think Mihawk can (we're talking about a Yonkou crew without the Yonkou here, just the subordinates).

This is hilarious close to delirious. Take away titles from WSM, WSC and Yonko, yet we still have extremely powerful figures who can solo Yonko crews by themselves. Look at how Kaido practically solo'd a few YC1-3 level pirates. YET, Kizaru, Aokiji, and Akainu were not able to do so so easily, in Aokiji's case, he was able to catch Jozu off guard and freeze him.
Akainu vs WB Pirates was not even shown the entire outcome, we only saw him take down one WB Commander who was pretty weak himself, Curiel. We didnt see Akainu fight/defeat Marco or Vista.
Mihawk was hands full dealing with Vista, and both we're not even going 100%.

Whitebeard walking into Marineford alone. Okay, say he wasnt there to save Ace. Just him alone would wreck the whole island and all off the admirals. Whitebeard was holding ALOT back because of his crew and because of Ace.

Yet you think Mihawk can do all this. When the Marines who know of his strength have sent a fleet to deal with him alone, yet they needed all the warlords and admirals and 100,000 elite marines to deal with one Yonko and his crew.
