"Numbers 5-8 are all pretty close together, to the point where a fight between any two of them would be tough to call. (arguably, that applies for fourth place as well, assuming that we're talking about Natsu with just what he can access without rage boosts or people giving him power-ups, though I'm sure people would get up in arms about me saying that)"
Look at what bro is saying natsu being scaled this low is fucking insane. Why the fuck is natsu so criminally underrated.
none of them is literally surviving this shit. Natsu was literally holding back against gajeel. Guys on Reddit can't debate for shit I swear. They just be saying rubbish
This was done back when people thought Mira's feat against Skullion was strong before Laxus destroyed Skullion and Madmolle, and Erza destroyed Misaki. Mira has never been on Erza's level since Tenrou Island.
In my opinion, to tank is the first fonction of a shield. It has to block assault and protect even if it has to be broken. This is what Erza did with Jupiter's canon. She contained all of the charge and felt broken. She survived and tanked this Deadly assault, saving Guild's people. In the same way, she tanked the Amped Laxus as he can't continue to fight due to no magic, the same as Erza. She tanked or contained him to a withdraw.
I clearly agree with your opinions and your objective analysis. Erza is in average laxus's tier since the beginning, more or less but Laxus can't compete when Erza rises up by PoF. Even Jose said that Erza underestimated herself when she compared Natsu to her. She OS Aria while she was barely standing on her feets while Aria was toying with Natsu, just before her fight vs Jose, who OS Gray and Elfman who were by far less injured than her.
Mistogan himself said to Laxus, that he is blind / arrogant, thinking that Erza is far weaker than them. Makarov was hoping that she had a chance to beat him as well during Fantasia.
Both Laxus and Erza are portrayed monsters since the beginning, far above Natsu and Gray's tier....
The way you gas up Erza's POF is something else. I don't understand how you and sharkai can so underestimate natsu this way. I know people don't scale the same way but natsu being on gray's level is fucking criminal

I can't stand people who so fucking underestimate natsu and put him on dragon eater level.
What I want to know is how could Gray sense how strong Misaki is before she did anything while Laxus had to fight Kirin for awhile but he figured out how strong he is
Good question.....I bet even the author doesn't know the answer to this question. Why did natsu told ignia he doesn't know how strong he is....... the magic power thing is so nuanced or was natsu just being natsu?
That's not how story's work. Author intention decides where the characters sit in power, especially in a series where the majority of characters aren't even getting screentime in most arcs. This is the same kind of backwards logic that led some people to believe that Erza was significantly stronger than Laxus before their fight in Draseel. "Well we haven't seen Laxus do anything for a while and Erza got a new ability so she's obviously stronger". The series doesn't work like that. This is why there's such a huge disconnect between how you guys view the series and what the author actually says. You ignore trends in the series and even direct statements from Mashima and then start scratching your head when a character does something that doesn't fit your made up power scale. Real power scaling only works in the framework of the canonical portrayals in the series. If feats were the only thing that mattered then Ikusatsunagi would stronger than Zeref lol.
try saying it again lmao . Gray getting canonically one shot by natsu's fire is the nail in the coffin, I've never seen a manga where you get one shot by your rival's power

Actually you can get a sense just like back in Alvarez where Brandish just approached them and they could sense that she was very strong without her doing anything.
you can tell by the amount of MP they have, especially when they power up. There is a base state such as causal vs serious vs peak state.
Laxus likely did not sense Kirin was strong and only around his level when they first fought and noticed a difference when Kirin got serious.

Sure, but I mean, Laxus would be around or slightly above causal Kirin at the time which required the latter to get serious which made him more of a threat To Laxus to get that reaction.

Like I said, it is usually the different in power that making note of one strength would establish them, if they are around the same level they wouldn’t take note.

Why shouldn’t they? Whether they are weak or not wouldn’t make a different, anyone can, it is just how they react that matters if their opponents are are around their level or greater casually or not hostile or decides to get serious.

I gotta go with @WoWfan on this one, so I had to comment.
If your magical power is around the same level; why would you react?? Kirin didnt feel like a threat because Laxus, who is in base and still has RL and his Trump spell is expecting to go ham. Then he powers up and it's a problem, ima have to dig deep and swing big lol.

So do you think people can hide the amount of MP they have because that’s the only way this makes sense, yes I get that someone’s not going to react to someone around the same level as them (even though Laxus did later on) you would think they would know the other person’s power level

I can answer this question. It's because Natsu has seen the truth. He's realized that MP levels doesn't matter.
Natsu has beaten a guy with infinite MP. He's also fought all of the god dragons. He's fought basically every major villains, and MP levels has never been the deciding factor of how hard someone hits. There are several people who can hit harder than FH Zeref.
Think of how a UFC fighter looks at a bodybuilder. That's basically how Natsu looks at people with high MP. Natsu has learned that it doesnt matter if someone has supidly high MP. All that matters is how hard they hit.

This scenario makes so much sense to me because I was only body building sometimes ago and then I started kickboxing. I understand the logic behind that because you lift heavy doesn't mean you can win a fight same thing with having lots of magic power.

This question tho.....? Really a good question. Misaki basically didn't do anything but laxus had to fight kirin and kirin had to get a little bit serious for laxus to be able to tell how strong he is. I don't really buy gray shitting his pants against erza vs misaki but laxus shitting his pants in front of kirin seems more legit to me
just look at his face. Laxus being scared feels more legit than gray but I don't really care if Misaki has gildarts level mp it doesn't really matter her feats are mid in front of suzaku's. She got knocked out in chap 105 and was not seen till 116/117 that's 12 chapters while suzaku got knocked out in chapter 114/115 and got back in the fight in chapter 117

The way Laxus said Kirin MP is at the same level as Gildarts makes me think Laxus and Gildarts fought each other before maybe during the S class tournament
