Now that some time has passed in the manga and the anime coming back I was just kind of curious as to what we think about Coby. From his power level from what we saw at Blackbeard's HQ to his decision to go after Luffy.

By that I mean both his power level right now whether we think it was earned or did it come out of nowhere.

And him saying he going stop Luffy from becoming the PK after Vegpunks broadcast. As some people think it's in character/ makes sense and others think it's stupid and doesn't sense I've heard arguments on all sides.

As I said up top just wondering what we're thinking about him right now and thought I'd open up a thread about it.

Coby had a bounty of 500,000,000 before, and he can now use "Honesty Impact"

So Coby is pretty much identical to Chinjao

Why would you say Coby's power came out of nowhere? We know he has been training. Does a character like Katakuri having a bounty of 1 billion is somehow better, and it came from "somewhere"?

I think coby's situation is comparable to sai's in the dressrosa arc. He went through an awakening of sorts. In dressrosa sai had a rather uninteresting showing at the coloseum. He probably wasn't "weak" but chinjao and luffy pretty much took no notice of him. Then he had his fight with lao g and unleashed a kick that split the country in two... At which point chinjao acknowledged him as a successor and even zoro made a mental note of keeping track of sai. I would guess sai unleashing this skill and it wasn't just that one kick that got a boost but rather he simply become generally stronger after finally unleashing the haki he had been training. Coby, pushed to his mental and physical limits by a extreme situation did the same and finally unleashed the massive haki he had been slowly building up. While not the same situation we saw with luffy (who rather than unleashing dormant power got big jumps in power from learning new haki techniques) by that point in the series haki boosts had become the norm.

That said, to me it's still kinda hard to imagine coby being an admiral or yonko level fighter. He is definitely powerful enough to be a vice admiral considering that the power gaps between them are fairly large... From weaker vice admirals like maynard (My guess is that he isn't a monster at least), to people who could be potentially candidates to become admirals (tokikake, gion). I suppose it wouldn't be too strange to see coby as a viable rival to luffy at the endgame as that would bring things full circle. Though it's a shame luffy would only ever get his "garp" when the story ends.

Sai was one-shot by Luffy in the Colosseum. Since he had a bounty of 160 million before Dressrosa, he must have been Supernova level

After awakening his Hasshoken, I think Sai is now a glass cannon of sorts

As in, comparable to pre time skip supernova? I don't agree with that. Oven and daifuku were among big mom's strongest executives and their bounties were also "supernova level". Sai at dressrosa was already a leader of a significant military force and a haki user... I'd say the most likely scenario is that he would wreck pre time skip supernova.

I used to go with the glass canon idea but the way things played out with luffy at whole cake island and wano changed my mind. Luffy's haki boosts just resulted in general increases in is power, even speed if we consider the start of his confrontation with big mom and kaido at oni island. It also serves the plot better if coby and sai are simply monstrously strong. On the coby side because it brings things full circle in a couple of ways along with giving him room to be a big player in the big war that is coming. On sai's front it allows him to actually function as a powerful allied captain. The story is at a point where the strawhat armada simply needs to have the strength to back up luffy's status as a yonko.

Being leader of a military force or Haki aren't a measuring of strength...

Hmmm, it depends? The happo navy has the capacity to exist and function in the new world, that's not nothing. And it was ultimately sai's haki and kick that got him acknowledged by chinjao and made him the leader of the army in question. This isn't like Krieg leading some hobos at the east blue. It's also a bit of a hard sale for me that sai, and most of the strawhat armada captains, won't benefit from the power creep as we head for the final war.

In the same arc Sai was introduced, we also got to see Elizabello, which is much weaker but got a far stronger attack

At least in the Levely arc, it did not seem Sai could get past Rob Lucci, so I don't think he was ever meant to be that strong besides his awakened Hasshoken

You may be right about the powercreep. However, that doesn't change his power level until then.

Regarding his army, aren't armies always fodder in One Piece?

Yeah, I am not sure of what oda wants to do with elizobello yet. His punch takes a whole ass hour to charge and then there's a significant cooldown until he can use it again. My impression with elizobelo is that his framing as a one trick pony is more specific than sai's and coby's at least. I used to think sai was in the same camp as elizobelo as a one trick pony but seeing ridiculous luffy's and even zoro's haki boosts have gotten and what it has done for their overall power in such a short timeframe I am inclined to thinking sai's situation is closer to them than to elizobelo's currently. Same for coby.

Armies in the story are weird. They are almost invariably fodder even to people who aren't near the top of the pecking order but 80% of the plot in the new world is built around an arms race which involves armies. Oda plays it rather loose here IMO. Caesar was a weapon's manufacturer for instance. Doflamingo sold conventional weapons and smiles which kaido fed to fighters with a variety of power levels. Looking at the sheer number of pleasures he wasn't even too picky about this. Big mom's betrayal of the vinsmokes was due to her wanting to personally take control of their cloning manufacturing process to boost her numbers. Both big mom and kaido ultimately had armies numbering in the 10s of thousands and both wanted more and better. I can't imagine the strawhat's armada 1000 happo navy soliders and 5000 orlumbus soldiers not being relevant going forward.
