Well, mate, it's been a fun one. It was pretty tough to design and run the game solo between deadlines. I mean, I'm used to hosting in busy periods, but to really have to get work done and go from appointment to appointment, it's rough. Nonetheless, I had a lot of fun reading this game.

Mafia played a strong game. They even did some 5D mindfuck plays totally intentionally. Town I don't think had the wrong attitude, but did have trouble getting their ducks in a row. I'll share some post-game thoughts later, taking my own outback rat (my cute Copana) to the vet for the first time in a bit.

Thank you all for playing familia, congrats to the winners, hope everyone had fun in outback landia ❤

.

🐍 🕷 MAFIA GAME 135 - OMO from Down-Under! 🦘 🐨

Lore 🐍 🕷 🦘 🐨

G’day, mates! Welcome to the land down under, Australia! This here ain’t your mama’s backyard! It’s a wild, unforgivin’ eco-system where everythin’ can kill ya, and nothin’ ever truly dies. Snakes slither, spiders lurk, and if it ain’t out to get ya, it’s probably watchin’ ya, waitin’ for the right moment. Now, we fixin’ to take a tour together, but hold onto yer hats ‘cause we’re goin’ as animals ourselves. We’ll hop, slither, and prowl through the bush, peekin’ at all the critters that call this place home. Kangaroos? Reckon they’ll try to box ya if you get too close. Crocs? They’re the local bankers of teeth, givin’ out loans you don’t wanna pay back. And the spiders… well, let’s just say they’ve got a bit of a reputation.

But here’s the kicker, mates: not everyone might make it through this adventure. Some’ll make friends with the critters, some’ll be a meal for ‘em. Keep yer wits sharp, your instincts sharper, and yer sense of humor sharpest. So grab your stuff, tighten your boots, and get ready to see the Aussie wild like never before. It’s gonna be a ripper ride… yee haw!

Ground Rules
-----

General Guidelines
Welcome to MH Mafia! This document provides the rules and guidelines for Hosts and Players participating in mafia games. These rules are designed to ensure fairness, an enjoyable environment and outline the consequences for rule violations.
  • The goal of this text is to provide a set of rules, guidelines and ideas that together are meant to preserve the peace and flow of both individual games and the complete set of games.
  • Please respect the Host's directions while the game is ongoing. Players are expected to follow their instructions without exception, to preserve the peace and flow of the game.
  • Mafia games are part of the larger MH community, and all MH guidelines, including staff authority, remain in effect
  • Mafia is a game of accusation and deception that can sometimes become emotional. Despite this, we ask Players to remain respectful toward the Host(s) and fellow Players.
  • Chronic misbehaviour, general unpleasantness, and disobedience (personal attacks, senseless spamming, harassment, etc.) have no place in these games. Griefing includes actions such as spamming, excessive rudeness, deliberately ruining the game, or intentionally derailing discussions.
  • These actions are subject to host assessment and, accordingly, violations as outlined in the Violations section.
Game ProceedingsThe Players

Factions and Win Conditions

  • Players are assigned a role and allegiance at the start of the game by the Host. For information on how to join a game, check the Host(s) section.
  • Town players (Townies) are the "uninformed majority" that must work to uncover Mafia players. If they eliminate all Mafia players, the Town wins. Each townie knows only their role and affiliation.
  • Mafia players (Mafias) are the "informed minority" who know each other's roles and identities and secretly work together to eliminate Townies. If they can reduce the town's population until there are as many living Townsies as living Mafias, the Mafia wins.
  • Third-party players (TPs) (e.g. Serial Killer, Shapeshifter, Santa, etc.) work similarly to the Mafia but have their own faction-specific rules and win conditions. If they are present in the game, both Townies and Mafias also need to eliminate all TPs to win.
  • If multiple Non-town factions are present in a single game, they are treated as opposing teams and are not informed of the existence or identities of the other teams. Each Non-town faction needs to eliminate all rival Non-town faction teams to win, even if they reach parity with town.
Gameplay Phases
  • Day Phase: All Players post publicly in the game thread, where they can each vote for which Player they want to be lynched at the end of the Day. Townies work together to try and lynch a suspected Non-town Player, while Non-town Players need to blend in to avoid getting lynched.
  • Day Phases generally last 24 hours, but may be lengthened or shortened to accommodate the Host's time constraints and/or the (shrinking) Player base.
    • If a Player receives enough locked votes to ensure their lynch and every Player has posted at least once, the Host may choose to end the Day Phase prematurely (without awarding violations to any Player who had not yet voted).
  • Night Phase: Town Players cannot discuss the game during this phase, but Mafia members can confer privately in their PM and/or in a Host-designated area (like a Discord room) and may choose a Player to kill.
  • Night Phases generally last 12 hours, but may be lengthened or shortened as well.
  • Lastly, the number of Mafia Members/Third Party Players depends on the number of participants (note this is an indication and may be deviated from based on the Host's discretion):
    • 7 - 10 = 2 Non-Towns
    • 11 - 13 = 3 Non-Towns
    • 14 - 17 = 4 Non-Towns
    • 18 - 20 = 5 Non-Towns
    • 21 - 24 = 6 Non-Towns
    • 25 - 27 = 7 Non-Towns
    • 28 - 31 = 8 Non-Towns
      etc.
Role Actions
  • Players with Day actions may use them at any time of the Day Phase before the last hour. Unless specified otherwise in the role description, their effects are (considered) immediate, even if the Host posts the result at a later, still appropriate, moment. The Host processes them in the order received.
  • Players with Night actions may use them at any time during the Night Phase, and before it is over, may change their mind as often as they like (the Host takes into account the most recent action sent).
  • The order of effects for Night actions is decided by their Priority, with higher-priority actions being processed first. Conflicting actions of the same Priority are resolved via a coin flip.
  • Players may submit Night actions in advance of the Night Phase as long as it is made clear which action they're using at what moment.
  • Players failing to submit actions on time will forfeit the actions for that Phase.

Posting
  • Each Player must post at least five (5) times per Day Phase. The Host may choose to warn the Player if they meet the threshold, but the posts are not substantive.
  • Merged posts count as a single post; the Host looks at the post count function of the thread to determine this
Failure to post, or commit any other kind of Rule Break, is subject to violations as outlined in the Bad Behaviour section.

Similarly, griefing, or deliberately committing game-disruptive behaviour, is considered a separate offence and warrants warnings and violations on its merit, detailed in the Bad Behaviour section.

Voting
  • Each Player must place at least 1 vote during the Day Phase.
  • You can only vote for one person at a time and cannot vote for yourself.
  • You may not take back a vote, even if placed by mistake. You are not allowed to edit your vote text.
  • A first vote is considered a regular vote. A second vote is a locked vote, which carries more weight than a regular vote in case of a tie.
    • Example: Player A has two regular votes, Player B has one regular vote and one locked vote. Between the two, Player B would die.
  • Players may change their vote once. The second vote is considered a "lock" and cannot be changed.
  • To vote, Players must bold their votes and use the format: votekill [Player Name] or votelock [Player Name]. Typing it this way ensures the host can easily find votes on every page of text.
  • If a Player receives enough locked votes to ensure their lynch and every Player has posted at least once, the Host may choose to end the Day Phase prematurely (without awarding violations to any Player who had not yet voted).
Failure to vote is subject to violations as outlined in the Bad Behaviour section.

Lynching
  • The Player with the most votes at the end of the Day Phase is lynched, and their role is revealed.
  • In case of a tie, the Player with more locked votes is lynched. If still tied, the Host resolves the lynch via coin flip.
  • A lynch is the last action to be processed during the Day Phase.
DeadPad
  • Dead Players are out of the game and cannot post or influence the game in any way. They are not allowed to “like” or “heart” any game-related posts by Players either.
  • Dead Players may be invited to a private chatroom (the DeadPad) by the Host to spectate the game and discuss the proceedings of the game with other dead Players, spectators and the Host(s).
  • The Host should not share any material information about the game until the game is over to guard against leaks.
  • Players may not discuss their contents with living Players until the game ends.
Influencing the game after death is subject to violations as outlined in the Bad Behaviour section.

Bad Behaviour SectionWarnings, Violations & Reporting

Warnings & Violations

  • Warnings: Host(s) are recommended to, if possible, initially issue warnings to misbehaving Players. Depending on the subjectivity, severity or degree of interpretation of the act, it is recommended that Host(s) first provide a Player with the opportunity to better themselves. This is subject to the Host's discretion.
  • Players who break any of the rules or agreed-upon conventions, or the spirit thereof, are issued violations. They are issued at the Host’s discretion.
  • Generally, the recommendation is to issue a single violation per rule break, though more or fewer may be issued depending on the severity of the action on the Host(s), Player(s) and Game. The general progression is: warning -> violation -> Host Kill. However, the Host may escalate at their own discretion.
  • If a Player reaches three violations, they are automatically Host Killed
  • If a Player reaches two violations, they are informed of their status and must confirm to the Host(s) that they will resume playing the game in agreement with the rules. If they do not confirm this to the Host(s), they may be subject to preemptive Host Kill or Substitution.
Posting Violations

Players are to observe the following rules concerning posting. The following section covers activities that warrant Host action regardless of intent, and may be penalizable during or after the game by the Host(s) at their discretion, with warnings, violations or bans, depending on the context, circumstances, severity and duration of the act. The following is a non-exhaustive list that the Host may use as a general guideline and use at their discretion while determining the nature and impact of prohibited posting:

Low Impact (Warning~1 violation)
  • Minor edits exclusively to fix a single or a few grammar/aesthetic changes are allowed if they are marked (clearly); otherwise, they result in a penalty.
  • Repeated and/or unwanted spamming, abusive language, and excessively derailing discussions.
  • Posting after death or influencing the game once eliminated.
  • Failing to make at least 5 separate posts during a single Day Phase. The Host may choose to warn the Player if they meet the threshold but the posts are not substantive.
  • Posting in the game thread during the Night Phase; Day End means Day End, no posts or votes after that point are considered. Posting a lot or long after the Phase has ended may result in further penalties.
  • Posting in other mafia threads, like the Mafia Discussion thread, after a Player has died, and commenting on the game state.
High(er)-Impact (2~3 violations)
  • Major edits to posts that change the meaning of the information initially presented.
  • Sharing or quoting information and/or screenshots from PMs relating to the game. This includes quoting your Host, your role PM, or any private communication with other Players.
  • This also includes describing unimportant PM details, such as, but not limited to, the colour/font of the text, fluff pics, choice of words, etc.
  • Fake screenshots, quotes and descriptions will be treated the same as genuine ones.
  • Referring to privileged information provided by the Host, for example, PMs. You can only share or fake role results in a non-identifiable way.
  • Discussing the game outside the game thread or DeadPad with active Players.
Transgressing Players are informed in PM that they have received a violation. Additionally, the Host informs the player base publicly (in the pinned voting post) that they have granted a violation to the transgressing Player, though depending on the nature of the transgression, the reason why may or may not be withheld. Warnings are given privately.

Behaviour Violations

The following is a non-exhaustive list that exemplifies what kind of behaviours are deemed griefing, or in disagreement with the spirit of the rules and the community, and may be penalizable during or after the game by the Host(s) at their discretion, with warnings, violations or bans, depending on the context, circumstances, severity and duration of the act:
  • Griefing and Misconduct: Players found to be griefing, trolling or (intentionally) derailing the game may receive violations at the discretion of the Host and council, bypassing the standard penalty progression. Hosts may warn and penalise Players at their discretion.
  • General Unpleasantness: Harassing other Players, excessive rudeness, or creating a toxic atmosphere that detracts from the game. This includes personal attacks based on a personal history between players.
  • Disobedience: Ignoring Host directions or MH guidelines
  • Playing against your Win-Condition: It is not allowed to deliberately play against your Win-Condition for non-strategic reasons. You are not allowed to sabotage your team for non-strategic reasons. Do not play against your win condition or play in a manner that is deliberately harmful to your side, regardless of how small your chances are.
  • Unsportsmanlike Behaviour: Deliberately and willingly sabotaging another Player in an unreasonable and/or disproportionate fashion (perhaps over an extended period, perhaps rendering them unable to reach their win condition, perhaps impacting that Player after having died themselves) is considered undesirable behaviour.
  • It is recommended that the Host choose an appropriate moment to deal with the griefing Player to guard the peace of the game and the comfort of the (remaining) player base and deadpad members. This is because it is likely the griefing Player might cause even more problems if they are addressed for their ill behaviours.
  • Players who have problems with the Host(s) are requested to address them privately with the Host(s) or wait until the game ends to address them on the game thread.
Reporting
  • Players may report others for unpleasant or disruptive behaviour. Reports are confidential and discrete and submitted to the Host(s) directly.
  • The Player submitting the report is encouraged to provide quotes, examples or context to the Host(s). The Host(s) will compile and evaluate whether this amounts to a violation.
  • A reported Player does not have to break a rule to be flagged as unpleasant or disruptive if (a part of) the Player base opinion suggests their behaviour detracts from the overall experience
Consequences for Violations and Reports

The following punishments are determined based on patterns of behaviour and the severity of complaints
  • Post-Game Warning: For less severe, individual or first-time cases, the Host(s) may, on their own, inform the reported Player they have been reported and warn the reported Player. If the Host does this, they must inform the council so they are familiar with a potentially emerging pattern.
  • Hall of Shame: For more serious or repeated cases of unpleasantness and/or rule-breaking, or a higher volume of reports about the same Player, the Host(s) and council may consider Host Killing a Player (during or after the game) and issue an appropriate ban instead.
  • Accumulation of Punishment: If the reported Player has already been penalised or Host Killed for a separate reason than the reports by the Player base, they may be punished more severely. This will be determined by the Council.

Host Kills, Substitution & Hall of Shame

Host Kill

  • Depending on penalty progression or Host discretion, the Host(s) may choose to manually Host Kill a Player by announcing this on the thread and taking them out of the game.
  • This may happen at an opportune moment for the Host and game state (as not to disturb the game flow), after determining the seriousness of a given offence.
  • A Player may be Host Killed post-game, should a bannable offence be determined at that point.
Player Removal
  • Player Removal involves taking a Player out of the game who has a valid reason to be removed. They are taken out of the game, but not Host Killed. Player Removal without Host Kill requires dire circumstances on the part of the Player.
  • Players are responsible for managing their schedules and other inconveniences. Therefore, the reason for removal must be serious and unavoidable.
  • This is used very sparingly by the Host(s). Removed Players do not go to the Hall of Shame
Substitution
  • Host Killed or removed Players may be substituted. Substitutes are arranged by the Host beforehand or during the game.
  • The Substitute is not allowed to have any kind of information about the game gained by Players in the game that would unfairly put them at an advantage. This means the Substitute Player cannot have joined the DeadPad while the game was ongoing.
  • Substitutes don’t inherit violations.
  • Even as a mollifying measure, Substitution is seriously disruptive to the game and should only be used if there are no other options. This is used very sparingly by the Host(s).
Hall of Shame
  • Host Killed Players are entered into the Hall of Shame. The council reviews each case and determines additional consequences, which may include temporary or permanent bans.
  • Find the Hall of Shame here

Host & CouncilThe Host(s)
  • The Host is responsible for creating and overseeing the game they host.
  • The Host announces on the Discussion Thread the day the game will commence and opens sign-ups for any forum members who would like to play, excluding previous Players currently listed in the Hall of Shame. While everyone is usually welcome to sign up for a game, the Host may refuse to accept Players they do not feel comfortable hosting in their game based on previously established negative conduct.
  • Once the sign-ups close, the Host sends out confirmation PMs where all signed-up Players are required to confirm their participation by the starting date of the game. Failure to do so will automatically remove the forum member from the list of Players for that game.
  • At the start of the game, the Host sends out PMs to Players informing them of their roles and allegiance. Players must wear their assigned avatar from this PM for the entire duration of the game.
  • During the game, the Host tallies votes and actions, opens and closes the thread during Day and Night Phases, and is responsible for maintaining a peaceful and smooth experience for the players. To this end, they may issue warnings, violations, and Host Kills at their discretion toward players that they deem to be misbehaving.
  • After the game, the Host provides an overview of all the true roles of the Players, as well as a clear list of all actions submitted by the Players throughout the game.
Host Rules and Expectations

Hosts are responsible for running games fairly, transparently, and according to established protocols. This includes:
  • Protocols and Documentation - The Host must include the most recent ruleset in the opening post of their game, and host according to those rules. Any experimentation with new rulesets must be approved by the Council in advance.
  • The Host must send each player their individual role PM (or group PM where applicable), written clearly and having the bare minimum of info as outlined in the Example PMs thread.
  • Council Input - The Host may take into account occasional feedback from Council members or non-playing Main Hosts when suggestions are offered on setup, rules, or hosting practices.
  • Rules and Roles - The Host is expected to understand all rules, roles, and role interactions. They must explain these thoroughly to players and ensure all participants are adequately informed.
  • Spirit of the Rules - The Host must protect and uphold the spirit of the game rules, not merely their literal wording. No circumventing the rules via loopholes and mechanics.
  • Fairness - The Host may not privilege certain players by providing exclusive information or by ignoring disruptive behaviour.
  • Responsiveness - Feedback and concerns from players regarding other players or gameplay issues must be acknowledged and addressed in a timely manner.
  • Timely Communication - The Host must inform players of delays or organisational difficulties as soon as possible. Similarly, if they shorten or lengthen the Day by a significant amount of time, they must inform the Players beforehand.
  • Game Updates - The Host is responsible for creating and updating vote counts and other essential game posts in a timely and consistent manner, allowing players sufficient time to respond to new information.
  • Game Design - The Host is expected to design fair game mechanics, competitions, and rules. They must be designed in good faith, with reasoning that prioritises fairness and player enjoyment.
Failure to meet these responsibilities in a way that negatively impacts the game, gameplay, or player experience may result in the Council reconsidering the Host’s Main Host status.

Sign-Ups
  • Public Sign-Ups - Sign-ups are opened in the Discussion Thread as a public post, allowing all players to view who has signed up. Players may also sign up privately by contacting the Host elsewhere, but their inclusion must still be listed in the Discussion Thread.
  • Hall of Shame - Hosts must always observe the Hall of Shame list when managing sign-ups. Players listed as banned cannot sign up.
  • Refusal of Entry - A Host may refuse certain players based on documented issues, such as previous severe misconduct within the Mafia section or a consistent history of disrupting games (e.g., repeated rule-breaking or toxic behaviour).
  • Player Base Objections - If multiple players (enough to meaningfully reduce participation or affect the Host’s planned setup) refuse to play because of a particular signup, but would have played if not for that Player, the Host may refuse that player entry.
  • Council Notification - If a Host chooses to refuse entry to a player, they must inform the Council before the game begins. The Council will review the case to ensure the exclusion is valid.
Main Host list
  • Anyone listed in the Main Hosts List can host on their own or host with any other person, regardless of whether they are in the Main Hosts List or not.
  • Anyone not listed in the Main Hosts List can only host together with someone listed in the Main Hosts List.
  • To be added to the Main Hosts List, one must first host together with someone listed in the Main Hosts List. If that person deems them ready to host properly, they can then be added to the Main Hosts List.
  • If there was a mistake and you were accidentally excluded from the Main Host list, contact the Council.
  • After the game ends, the Main Host must post a review of the Co-Host’s contribution in the game thread. This review should explain how the Main Host prepared them, what responsibilities the Co-Host handled, what they did well, and any areas needing improvement. The Council will use this review when deciding whether to add the Co-Host to the Main Host list.

The Council
  • If you think someone behaved badly with or without breaking rules, you PM the host, the Host may inform the Council if it is severe, and the Council will consider taking action.
  • The Council consists of a select group of veteran Hosts and Players that oversee the management of game rules, roles and bans.
  • Generally, the Council only act outside of ongoing games, and members may intervene/assist/consult on behalf of Host(s) that request this, provided that Council member is not alive in the ongoing game.
  • They are responsible for maintaining and updating the rules, discussing, implementing and removing roles and updating the Hall of Shame and other complementary texts, as well as resolving post-game disputes.
  • The Council is currently composed of the following members:

------

Mechanic 🐍 🕷 The Aussie Ecosystem 🐨 🦘

The only roles in this game are the custom ones listed below! Perhaps some of these we could trial to promote to actual roles!

Mechanic
The StoatDActivates by posting during the Day, "I am the Stoat!!" and then listing their top 5 targets. Pops all Illusions immediately. Must pop at least 2 Illusions (or dies). Then Day Kill highest still-living Player on that list (otherwise RNG).
Clown #21Can block a Player every night. If Town, joins the Mafia as QP if successfully blocks a Mafia action.
Dinner Date2Target a Player to find out their allegiance. If Mafia, find out their role. Does not pop them if they are an Illusion, but no response.
Plague Doctor2Target exactly 2 Players; those Players cannot die during the Night Phase. Next day, both become Sick.

Cannot target any of those 2 Players again. Cannot use this role two nights in a row. Cannot be targeted by protective actions
Quack Doctor2Player protects one player per night phase. If that Player would die while protected, they turn into an illusion instead.
Fumbler3The Player can turn one of the Players who Lynched them into an Illusion the following night.
Spirit BombPTurns their killer into an Illusion. If lynched, turn the Player who voted for them last into an Illusion.
Nintendo PresidentPVote power equal to #Illusions + 1 (max power: 3). If Townie, they think they are a QP.
MusashiPThe first time this Player as an Illusion would shatter, they instead regain their role.
QPPYou're slightly embarrassed to know them.
CuntPIs told at the start of the Day how many Illusions are in the game
IllusionPThe Illusion is not aware they have received this secondary role. The Illusion can write posts as usual, but their votes and night actions, though registered, won’t count.

If the Illusion is targeted by any kind of action, they immediately shatter and die. Upon their shattering, the host will also reveal what night the player was turned into an Illusion

I like my role, find it a bit ironic considering my animal. Hope do to some swooping. Birds are known as Big Ange up in Queensland.

Uh I guess hinting has a lower impact in this game if roles aren't allegiance bound (tho some can indicate the party), so I'll say I'm illu relate for now in cause I'm brainfarting once more lmao

What's gnosia?

And I guess they stand for day role (D), priorities in active roles (#) and passive roles (P).
Just another mafia/werewolf/evil substitute~

You're right, looking at it again now it's decently obvious.

This is like the joke Samuel idea game, with each of us being aspects of Sam. I can probably act the part of mine.

Hello, I got a snake, some of roles are confusing, but from what I grasp I could be me, another role or an illusion.

Votekill lawlett tons of illusions, not sure what to make of it right now
G’day mate, are you a cunt?

What's gnosia?

Gnosia is a new anime(still ongoing) that’s a mafia game/werewolf related theme. It’s quite relatable if you know mafia games.

I also was wondering what the letters are, didn’t think of Day or passive roles.

I appreciate the honesty but isn't quack doctor pretty much a SS?
I would think quack is a good way to make mafia useless, but you could be onto something. Though, we had this before in a game that people claimed to have “blue” roles when we didn’t know allegiance too and it went bad for them

Do wonder if there is a TP due to Quack Doctor description but there are other roles that can cause a player to turn into an illusion as well, does feel like Town is disadvantaged considering a potential town blocker can self-recruit into a mafia, Plague Doc is limited to name a few. Guess you have the goat stoat to try and offset. Feels like game can get very chaotic very quick.
