Well for one, I would say there was definitely shared opinion here that it was unsettling and that's worthwhile to discuss. As well, Twitter does represent a fraction of readers but it is still a portion. If people are liking or not liking something, its worth discussing why a subsection of people feel that way and if its valid

Western Twitter reception never mattered to something surviving or not. When I brought up western reception as a possible reason to why Otr survived over Kaedegami most said it didn't matter.

It was irrelevant.
In Shonen Jump the first impression of a new series is one of the most important things for its survival, trending around social media in quite a negative light right in the first chapter is definitely relevant, again, it's not what simply killed the manga, but it totally left a bad mark in the series reputation.

See how the only thing it still talked about the manga, be here or in Japanese Forums, is the onigiri stealing stuff? lol

But no one is saying western opinions matter about Kinato survival, we're simply discussing about the reaction over the content.

The first impression was that it was a boring unappealing manga and that's what killed it.

My issue is that these arguments come up like Japan is this magical place where everyone has the same singular opinion. "Oh, all of Japan is furious about this stealing character"as if this wasn't a niche internet controversy. There are some cultural biases and influences always, but it's really exaggerated in these discussions, there are clashing opinions there like everywhere else.

We can apply this about everything else we gather from JP Twitter & Forums when it's about reception/opinions over manga, this good or bad reception for X manga is irrelevant because is just internet niche thing lol i remember well the manga release and it was talked a lot and in a surprising negative way, it was something that bothered people in a cultural way which is why it seemed so blown out of proportion for us, no one is saying all Japan was bothered by it but the people that buy the magazine and send their votes, they were really bothered by it at the time.

Yup, Jp readers gets it :hee

"Kaminagi-san of Kinato's Magic, by having “a super weird person who's totally into story roleplay” sandwiched between the “knight character” and the “princess character”, manages to make two seemingly contradictory attributes coexist. This is seriously pretty amazing."

lol the way some on 5ch have been pushing this narrative that Kinato & Nue have the same audience for reasons so if Kinato makes success, it will make Nue be canceled, man these people are annoying...

When a page in chapter 3 explicitly mentions that Kaminagi acts like a knight to girls that are her type, I don't think it's a stretch to think the character was initially a lesbian.

If this page's wording is different in the original japanese version, I understand how the JP readers' and the West's reaction are so different about this chapter.

If the author's intent was truly not to imply she was a lesbian (which seems unlikely to me when reading the english translation), it still sucks to see an original character becoming a shitty (to me) trope, but anyway I don't like how some users here pretend that it's TOTALLY STUPID to think the character was a lesbian

I'm on Team Kinato for the proposed Kinato vs Nue wars. Because I like the girls more in Kinato from a character design standpoint. Like that clerk girl from the second chapter with the freckles and the tattoos? What a baddie. Can't honestly say I've turned my head at any of the girls Nue has sold me at all. Even the recent addition Natsuki had me a little confused the recent chapters because she looks like Nue. And then Nue also has a mini-Nue inside Gakuro's sword given to him by Nue, but Nue also turns into a mini version of herself in this fight... Reina also has a himecut, but thank goodness she cut her hair or else I'll be even more confused. I guess there are girls like Suzaku who got me nodding but no one really turns my head in this manga. Just not my taste. Hell, I had to do a double take when Reina got kidnapped and that she'll be the damsel of the arc cause like... Who's Reina?

Well, you see, you're wrong and the proof is in the source you're citing.

... I can't read Japanese so you'll have to tell me whether the translation was accurate or not.

Under Doctor I’m wanting to like it but these kinds of series need to have an engaging overall cast for me to grab onto and this current cast hasn’t grabbed me so far

A shame about Kinato. I was enjoying the first few chapters but the latest one just left a sour taste in my mouth and left me feeling discouraged on the direction of the series. Dropping it now

Alien Headbutt stays being hot blooded action and I’m enjoying the whacky over the top thrill ride. Enjoying this the most for now

She wasn't intended as a lesbian. "Her type" was used to indicate that there's a pattern in the girls that Kaminagi see as princess, it wasn't an indication of romantic or sexual interest, even if one could come to see it in this way.

I think it's all just context. For one, saying "Girls that are her type", doesn't mean she doesn't like guys. A bi or pan person can say "that girl is totally my type" but still be into guys. So, acting as if they're walking back on her supposed sexuality just feels like bi-erasure low-key.

Then, there's the added layer of just...kinda knowing that Shonen Jump wouldn't do an LGBT+ character as a key trait. I've been vocal (I think?) at how I would love a Shonen-AI series in Jump. Do I expect it anytime soon? Hell no. So, when I saw that page in Ch.3, I immediately knew it was going to be a gag at best, at worst a throwaway like Ryuusui in Dr. Stone

This just feels like the dog beating you at chess argument that people had during MHA where if anybody thought, especially for a humorous adventure series, to have progressive themes and topics, they were setting themselves up for disappointment. Not that I can't see where they were coming from, but I never once thought it was going to go anywhere even if I wanted it to

Kinato got infected by the woke western crowds ugh. Manga is not a vehicle of your activism. I never see her as a lesbian, it is more like she is delusional. And I don't think she will be the MC love interest like what everyone said. It is so obvious that is is just a gag. Those panels of her thinking the MC is a knight is so damn funny 🤣🤣
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

I also just feel like in general people are being way too judgy on Shonen Jump manga. Like, last week UD was abelist. This week Kinato is misogynistic /homophobic.

And its certainly not the first time. MHA was homophobic for killing off Magna, for not making Himiko directly state she loves Uraraka, for not getting Deku and Bakugo together.

It's fine to want more progressive themes in your manga, I'm all for it. But Shonen Jump is not the place for it. The most progressive we've gotten is probably MHA which again, got a lot of comments about Horikoshi being a homophobe. If Kumangai was a lesbian? Awesome. I'd love it. The fact that she's not doesn't make me not want to read the series because: 1) It never felt that she was outright stated as one; 2) I wouldn't be reading Kinato for her. Hell, I'd read it more for Linae than her.
Ch4 and 5 is totally in line with what we sees so far lmao. What do these people expect. Ch1 we see a bunny girl honey trap and a tropey childhood friend who is in it only for the money. Even if there is a "yuri" in the manga eventually, i am gonna bet it is portrayed as a "lesbian fanservice for men" rather than a sapphic wlw romance for female eyes. YES, there are huge difference. The first one is used just to feed into the fetist of male readers.

I hope this wipe all the "wrong target audiences" away from the manga. They are the kind that starts discourse because they want the manga to be their activism vehicle

And people are reallt overblown the issue. It is not like she is portrayed as a yuribait for 100 chapters. It was a 1 chapter 1 scene gag that got immediately subverted 2 ch later. Duh. It is better that Amemiya subvert this so quick now, rather than let people has "yuri" expectations for much longer.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

Also, I must add on. Yes I can understand that positioning the MC as princess instead may be more interesting. BUT remember that Kinato is still a shonen manga. And it is so obvious that Kinato is positioning itself to appeal more to the male readers (the female fanservices etc). Which is a direction so different from Shadow Eliminators, which so obviously positioned as Fujoshibait.

Making the MC a princess will TURN OFF a LOT of JP male readers.

It is a death sentence.

Western debacle means nothing. What's important is the JP votes.

What i get It's not that the western and japanese reactions to the content are so different, is that the jp side isn't really "reacting much" to this because what i see in the comments they never took the idea of Kaminagi being a lesbian seriously at all or more than just a gag/bait, i had read so far dozen and dozen of comments about the chapter and i didn't see a single comment about the author being homophobic or that Kinato "cured" Kaminagi sexuality, at best 1 single comment on Kinato's thread in 5ch being pissed about "lesbian bait" (but it was actually criticizing the entire manga) which was quickly brushed off by the other users, and that's it, all that i see are jokes like "Kaminagi's fall" or "Kaminagi's completely defeat" and the others saying she's cute and funny, Kaminagi seems pretty popular between jp readers, there's no negativity or animosity coming from the jp side related to this topic much towards the author, meanwhile here you got this whole "reading too much into things", questioning if the author had any agenda behind it, if X mean this or that or straight up attacking the author, and i think is important to note that isn't "everybody" on Twitter, we're mainly talking about the ones super overreacting about it, most Yuri fans that were following the manga just because of that gag/bait on ch3 that are now pissed because of what happened, and, like, they have the right to be pissed but the problem is that many Yuri fans simply took a joke in ch3 too literal only to act like they got betrayed after 2 chapters.

And if anyone is wondering if they are aware of the overreactions on Twitter, yeah they are, they're not really discussing it just some comments on 5ch for example as you can expect they're criticizing western readers as misinterpreting the manga, criticizing people for "arbitrarily labeling" Kaminagi as a lesbian, or questioning what's with "foreigners obsession over Yuri", so yeah, from what i see there's zero controversy in the japanese side, the reactions to the chapter are mostly positive, of course you have the standard hate comments but it's about the manga in general.

I had this giant ass post for Kinato, but no matter what I did, it made me sound angrier than I really feel about this development so I'm not going to post it.

Instead, I'm just going to say: I really don't think some of you understand that just because the author didn't intend for something, doesn't mean a reader can't see parallels between their own struggles in life and feel represented and happy as a result. Representation in media does matter. It helps people who are struggling if they see someone with similar problems to them overcome them, reassure them that it's actually alright to feel the way they do about their sexuality or gender or race, etc. Ironically enough, Kaminagi's reaction to the book itself is a perfect demonstration of that. From everything we see about it so far, it seems like a normal girl x boy princess romantic story; but she initially related to the knight more despite being the "boy" in the relationship and it helped her feel better about herself. She was also "reading too much" into a series she loved and relating to it beyond its original intent. So I really don't think it's unfair if someone looked at Kaminagi and accepted her as a parallel for being a lesbian even if the series never said she was.

Even if Kaminagi wasn't meant to be a lesbian (I don't think she was for the record), she still acted like someone who liked girls and was proud of it. That's empowering to some people that wished they had the courage to be open with their sexuality but can't be. So for it to then be walked back and come across as she doesn't actually like girls, she just needed to meet the right guy, yeah, I think it's understandable if someone who liked that aspect of Kaminagi felt betrayed. Now if later chapters show that she's still capable of seeing some girls as princesses and herself as the knight, then it's better since it's clear her feelings are complex and she's working through things still. If it's really just "now Kaminagi will only see Kinato as the knight and she's the princess, and she fell in love with Kinato, the end", then yes, it's going to come off as cheap.

Don't get me wrong, I don't believe most of the outrage on western Twitter. That site is a cesspool of "negatively is the only way anyone is ever reading my post" and bots rage baiting you so most of their disgust is disingenuous. But I also don't think you should dismiss someone who legitimately does feel like they were robbed of what they saw as representation.

Kinato will do just fine in JP. Don’t you guys remember the mess Drama Queen did in the west when it first came out because it was labelled as racist?

Drama Queen is not going strong at all? It never sold that well and now it it barely makes Shoseki weekly charts when it has 5-6 days. The only thing keeping it afloat is its chapter views, and even then they're a shadow of what it was producing for the early chapters.

I get it's a joke/gag and Kaminagi was never really meant to be a lesbian, but I still think the whole thing of "actually she was never attracted to girls in the first place, she was just delusional" is still kind of iffy? Idk. I'm not gonna say the author is a raging homophobe and try to cancel him on Twitter, but it personally doesn't sit right w me. Ig a lot of people will disagree with me, that's okay. I'm just not really into this sudden switchup. Maybe she's bi? Idk.

That being said, going to Jump of all places for your yuri fix? You'd have better luck with Hoyoverse games.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

I don't really expect most of Jump to try for diversity/representation when it comes to such things. I believe it can exist and when it does, it's good and encouraging to see, but we have to keep in mind that the target audience in mind is young. Japanese boys - even if there was an actual lesbian in Kinato, she would likely be used a lot for yuri fanservice for a male audience, not meant to be "lesbian representation for women who love women".

Moral of the story: Don't Jump in to Shonen manga expecting a bed of lilies..
