Lots of people already expected Sushi to be a swordsmith, but going from what I assume is the runner-up to make the enchanted blades to one of six wielders is a crazy career trajectory. IIRC it was said earlier in the series that Kunishige chose his most trusted allies for the task so even if he was competition I'm fully expecting him to be chill. Still nothing on the girl wielder, though. Even Sushi got some screentime during the Kamunabi raid by narrating the Soga stuff.

The pinetree makes me wonder if those theories about hatshaku being an islander are actually true. We know they occupied Japan throughout the war, so some definitely could have slipped through the malediction. It just depends on how many that number is.

The seitei war wasn't fought just with the enchanted blades. One datenseki soldier wont be able to take on Japan in its current state, so even if hatshaku is one of the islanders I think it makes sense if you see it as them wanting to bide their time building an army. Because what they wanted wasn't people who were datenseki capable. It was a way to make datenseki capable with people.

I am curious though, and this kind of relates to what you were saying about them trying to find people whose cells could tune the datenseki, that if he is an islander whether the rest of the hishaku are aware of it. He's obviously a pretty high ranking member within the group.
