Almost everything in Jump has 'potential', if they didn't think a series had potential they wouldn't run it.
I strongly disagree with this. If anything was proven over the last few years, is that Jump tries some stuff that were actually DOA. Some of them were really, really clear, like Gonron.

Or even more unprepared slop like SWOT & Zan.

I feel like a big part of Jump's decline as of late is that they're doing anime adaptations of their series way too late nowadays, choosing to do them right when the series is in its endgame, making could be magazine readers decide to wait until the final volumes are out when the manga is done instead of choosing to strike with anime adaptations while the iron is hot for the rising in popularity hit new manga series, creating a new fan base dedicated to checking out the must read titles in the magazine.
I feel like that's why the magazine has a bit of a instable feel to it as of late...

I wonder if that decision is on their end, or from like the actual animation end. Some cases like Akane, where they wanted to have the vas learn how to perform rakugo make sense, but then yeah, for a series like Sakamoto Days its confusing.

After KnY, I think they want to focus on quality more than quantity and the mercy of the adaptation studio now

I think people tend to focus on the failures. Tbh most of highest selling battle shonen IP come from WSJ for decades. Maybe the readers kinda settle for that niche and it end up making other genres harder to survive

I have a feeling that if something like stuff from Adachi get serialized in WSJ, it gonna gets cancelled. Such slow SOL tend to fail in WSJ regardless of quality and/or perceived quality

Cannot say the same about quality of Sakadays yo. Objectively it is not a bad adaptation, but the very late release made people (unfairly) expect the level of jjk and csm sakuga

Sunday and Magazine aren't getting hit sports series as well. Besides Blue Lock, the long running ones are Red Blue and Suruga Meteor and they both don't sell well even for their magazine standards. I assume they're kept because their editorial teams want at least another sports manga running. Not counting Orion's Board, but if it counts you could consider Akanebanashi as well.

Sakamoto took such a long time, I do believe they did wait for a capable studio to give their offer, but as all the big action studios we know were dying in their own successes, they ended up choosing what available or nothing

Even KnY anime came out 3 years after is started. Now we’re happy when the hits come out with an adaptation 4 years later

Nope. They don't do it late. It's just that even if producers ask as soon as the first chapter is out, even if they sign the contract early, even if they find the funds fast, they need at least 3 years to make it. All studios are overbooked, not enough trained animators etc. If you want a team that does good work then it takes time to get a good work schedule for everyone to be able to work on the project.
When they anounce a series, it's not when it's decided.

That's right. We just have Medalist and then dig it maybe once it has an anime, in Afternoon.

Preview & premise for the "J Next Break Generation" 5 One Shot Festival:

"A massive series of one-shot stories featuring young talents kicks off in the next issue! Jump’s most promising newcomers clash with their best works! Which one is your favorite!!? "

#22/23: Tensai Harai Gakusha Raro Papuru no Hatsukoi by Yuta Kato

"A genius exorcist falls in love for the first time!"

#24: Shangai Ryujin by Takahata Yuu

"A hard-boiled mafia summer romance & action!"

#25: Blood Marriage by Mori Tomohiro

"A Hunter and a Vampire—An Unlikely Marriage?"

#26: New Year Day no Kaibutsu by Miya Ayumu

"Boy Meets Monster! End-of-the-World Battle!"

#27: Tamura-ka Hyaku Monogatari by Amakaya Yumihiko

"A terrifying home comedy about a family of exorcists"

There's a clear theme in this festival, all the one shots are a either about Exorcist & Supernatural Creatures mixed with romance & action, i think they all interesting.
Alright, here are some of the one-shots I managed to find for some, not all, mind you, from some of the authors that will show up in this one-shot festival.

The only one translated is Amakaya Yumihiko's, which is most likely going to be the same one-shot, to be completely honest, if what we saw last year is any indication, especially with Rinjin Douji from Nagisa Ide(Just want to point that out for this one shot):

Now, for some of the others, starting with Yuta Kato, an author with some experience, but just like Yumihiko's one-shot, I have a pretty good guess that it might follow somewhat to his previous one-shot from last year in Jump Giga Autumn 2025, of course, I could be absolutely wrong here:

Kougyouchitai Yabai

As for Takahata Yuu, yelp, this is an author I was excited to see for some time now, as I am almost certain that he is or was an assistant for Spy x Family and the following oneshot of his, dated back to 2021, will prove it:

Vati Lipepe

For the likes of Mori Tomohiro, he previously did a one-shot in 2023 for Jump Giga Autumn 2023:

Menchika no Ansatsusha

As for the likes of Miya Ayumu, I unfortunately found little information about them online. Although I do suspect they might be using a different pen name and might be an author one of us may know of, but who knows, we would need to wait for the issue to see for ourselves.

Zan has to be one of the ugliest jump manga I have ever read. I wonder what the author is doing now after SWOT flopped.
Naoya Sugita finished his Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush manga on Saikyo Jump in 2024 after 2 years of serialization.

This, the magazine should be full of exorcists, ninja, sports, not sure why they are struggling for sports but can do amazing with the first two, with constant back to back hits.

Hit is just a form of talking, Jump is unable to get anything to even survive at all while WSM, WSS and others are always able to find at the very leat sport series that perform and sell decently, that's the thing.

If Chess is a sport so is Shogi, Akane-banashi is performing arts.

Red Blue got a live action series, clearly is doing well, probably does well digital, and Suruga Meteor is said to be performing great in the survey rankings:

"Weekly Shonen Magazine's "Suruga Meteor" has been revealed to be the No.1 most popular new series in the past four years according to reader surveys"

That's not what happens with a ton of anime adaptations, Shonen Magazine is announcing anime adaptations as fast as just a couple of months after the 1st serialization anniversary with the anime releasing in the next year and they look fine for most, it's been pretty clear that Shonen Jump in special is struggling lately to get their anime adaptations out with a decent speed.

Without getting too off topic Red Blue is the poster child for why physical sales figures aren't everything in today's world. At best it sells like a fifth of what Martial Master Asumi sold, but it has gotten a live action series as Shinuki said and it also inspired the real life MMA Koshien which is probably the most impact any sports series has had since Haikyuu, so clearly the manga is doing well somewhere.
Also this is a good time to point out that sometimes I feel like us Jump fans take some things its series do like volume extras for granted, because I imported a couple Red Blue volumes a while back and holy hell, these things have NOTHING going for them. It takes four volumes for the author to throw in even a single 4koma. I can see why no one bothers buying the physical releases, it's so unfulfilling.

I strongly disagree with this. If anything was proven over the last few years, is that Jump tries some stuff that were actually DOA. Some of them were really, really clear, like Gonron.
Even since 2020 I think it has been clear that Jump runs certain series, not because they have "potential" but to have some variety in the magazine for a little while. A lot of gags (like Moriking) are like this, there is no way Jump thought they would be long-runners. I would put Someone Hertz as a surprisingly successful entry in this category.

Same with manga with really bizarre premises (like MamaYuyu)—again, just so there is something novel in the line-up. If it works, like P6, that's great, but I can't imagine there were high expectations for I Tell C or Star of Beethoven.

The other main idea is to let promising artists promote themselves and/or build up technical skill. But there have been a lot of promising artists and not a lot of promising results in recent memory. Nue and Shinobi Undercover would be instances of this going right.

Finally there is absolute dogwater like Nice Prison or Gonron and I guess no one else submitted in that round.

It feels pretty rare to see a series that it feels like the the editorial has confidence in to the degree of, like, Blue Box or Ichi the Witch. It is also true that several of these "slam dunks" have failed in the past few years though (Red Hood, Tenmaku Cinema)
