Thanks to Shinuki for giving us all five of the one shots.

Now for the fun part, which of the five authors do you believe have the most chance to debut, thanks to their one shots?

For me personally, Blood Marriage, Tamura-ka Hyaku Monogatari and Shangai Ronren are my top three picks. All three of the authors I would be very invested in seeing make their debuts.

The only reason I did not add Yuta Kato and his exorcist one shot is plainly cause I read another more recent work of his called Tsurumi's Slap that, in all honesty, I would be far more interested in seeing it being adapted just for the absurdity it delivered compared to the other one.

Unfortunately, Miya Ayumu had the weakest work of the entire bunch. He had good ideas but the delivery was not good nor was how both the plot and paneling delivered. So I think a bit more experience would do well for him.
I read the new oneshot, about a boy who constantly draws ghosts to him finding a live-in job working for an exorcist family. It feels like a Yozakura/Roku set up, revolving around a family who all have weird quirks using comedy as the base but with room to become serious.

I'd say it was the 2nd best of these oneshots after Blood Marriage and I think it could be fun as a series, but changing the premise to be about literally anything besides exorcists. Keep the rest of the set-up the same, just using a different idea that's not so overdone.
Compared to the first, does the second one improved a lot or no? I mean, regardless, it is a good one shot and the author did try to do things a bit differently from the previous one and that is far more commendable.

Reactions here and from twitter. Like people saying Ichi and Kagurabachi were both recommended by Hori.
Yeah, Hori reccomends kagurabachi 3 times:
2 through Obi and 1 through collab Jump GIGA/Weekly Shonen

and Ichi the Witch once (i think obi too? idr)

I’m sorry but Gakuro’s harem and his relationships with the girls are just not that deep or note worthy… it’s just a basic harem full of cliches turn arounds to try and make every girl fall in love with him, like every other harem in existence. And yes I do agree that cast is now way too big, and it’s not necessary.

But— the manga can be highly entertaining at times and so is the action. The artwork is definitely great, some characters designs are above average, and the overall setting has definitely its own identity. I do believe it should be praised in what it actually excels at. Arc climaxes are also really good. And again, some panels are just jaw dropping, there’s a lot of effort put into some of them.

I wouldn’t call Nue’s exorcist’s story or characters in any way deep or as complicated as some of you try to make it out to be, but it’s definitely a fun story with really nothing that is straight up bad. It’s a nice read that I would recommend to some friends, that’s about it.
Yeah, no. Given how I can easily write essays for each chapter every week, there is no way in hell I can ever agree with this sentiment. In fact, it goes back again to my initial comment: Nue IS a rich story.

Have any other one shot besides Yuta Kato's one been translated yet?

Hori recommended plenty of failures like Dear Anemone and Zipman. That's selective memory and neither Ichi nor KGB sold close to 200k first month. They don't reach that number right now. There is no way Under Doctor outsells everything in the magazine except One Piece from vol 1. There isn't even going to be that much volumes printed to sell.

At best it sells Someone Hertz vol 1 numbers which was also sold out from day 1

Since all of the one-shots from this project have been done, which ones are the best and the worst?

I made it clear that Blood Marriage, Tamura-ka Hyaku Monogatari, and Shangai Ronren are the top picks for me. While New Year Kaibaitsu was the weakest one of the entire batch.

Shinuki, how would you rate the five one-shots? I already know Tirakai is gonna say Blood Marriage and it's a no-brainer, so I'm curious about your opinion on the matter. Same for everyone else.
Have any other one shot besides Yuta Kato's one been translated yet?
Sadly no. Which sucks, but at least there are the raws to peruse around.

Not complaining really but I think premiering the first episode a whole 9 months in advance is a weird choice. It was bad enough being a CSM fan hearing everything from that early screening in France and I think that was only a few days before S1 dropped 🤭

I think it’s one of those things where the people who are turned off by the surface-level aspects of the series aren’t going to take the effort to dig deep enough into it to find all the nuances and intricacies the author thought of and snuck into the corners of the manga, so it doesn’t appear to have any depth at all. This probably happens to other series of mixed popularity for different reasons, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are stories where the author put a lot of thought into the world and intricate aspects of it and people don’t talk about it because the immediate storyline is mediocre (not saying that’s Nue, just throwing out a hypothetical variant scenario).

This soon? I almost wish they’d hold off on this kind of thing until at least January… and especially with it being “the first 20 minutes” tells me the first episode proper will be extra long, which I do think is a great idea in this case and am not sure how the flow of that will change with this tease. I also think this locks them out of making any tweaks to the first episode if they want to go back and adjust something in the coming months, which maybe isn’t a concern for them at this point. But I still think it’s awful early and probably gonna make people antsy for the release to come quicker.

It is really not that good of an idea to show a 20-minute preview of an anime so ahead of an actual broadcast. 9 months earlier is strange enough. Makes me wonder if they wanted to release the anime this time but got developmemt issues.

Best characters got top 3. It'll be funny if Nue ends up with 3 male characters in the top 10.

Issue 27 rankings:

Tier 1 (Great):

1 - Someone Hertz (fantastic chapter, one of the best of the whole series so far! Hit me in the feels having been in a semi-similar situation ngl)
2 - Witch Watch (I live for game type stuff like this)
3 - One Piece (Brook's backstory shaping up nicely!)
4 - Ichi the Witch (That is SO overpowered, even if it can only be used once before diminishing results. Wonder how Chun will deal with this?)
5 - Akanebanashi (Kaisei not used to being the underdog eh? It's funny, Issho wins either way here - either he outright wins the Rakugo "battle" and even if he doesn't, he has successfully pushed both Akane and Kaisei to new heights and helped the art of Rakugo as a whole....what a villain, man)

Tier 2 (Good):

- Kagurabachi (good but i'm confused on how they thought a 1 year old Hiyuki would help them lol. Also what's stopping the Mikaboshi from invading right as they get Chiaki anyway?)
- Kiyoshi (Nice little tie in from the backstories, this arc overall was pretty solid!)
- Blue Box (power of friendship goes brrr, but will it be enough?)
- Shinobi Undercover (I knew the mud would live on in some ways as a rep of Yoichi! Anyway, nice bridge chapter to the next big thing, can't wait to meet the heads, i sense some good lore expansion coming up lol)
- Under Doctor (We're finally getting some long running big bads. Also Samurai Cameroon got that shit on fr. Also reminds me of Samurai Champloo, or maybe Afro Samurai...wonder if there's any inspo?)
- Roku (Holy aura from the lunch ladies...also, unlike Agravity Boys, this series seems to have some "heart" and actual serious moments to it between all the comedy, which I quite like. Shows this author can do both well)
- Kinato's Magic (I actually quite like the direction the series has gone in recently. Expansion of how mana works, the world and a kinda cool dancing based power system to help train Kinato. Shame it might have come a bit too late though, but we'll see)

Tier 3 (Ok):

- Me and Roboco
- Himaten
- Nue's Exorcist (rest in peace Gekka...kinda)
- Drawn to the Fire (actually solid enough, you can even see in the art that the MC never intended to make the pass he was seemingly going to do. I still think they should have focused more on building up the team mates first rather than rivals though)
- Ruri Dragon (an actual Dragon? Finally!)
- Sakamoto Days
- Alien Headbutt (rest in peace, your art and character designs were cool as fuck but that's about it....a real shame, as I was hoping for a successful wrestling based series :( But oh well)
- Class 2-B (still not really sold on this series yet but it's getting better....I think? The bigger cast is certainly helping imo)

Tier 4 (Bad):

N/A
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Sunday: Mao, Frieren, Kaihen no Mahoutsukai, Kagurai, Albus, Silver Mountain.
Magazine: Four Knights, Ura Tokyo, Gachiakuta, Shangri-la Frontier.
Champion: Iruma, Stunned Hero, Cherry Yuusha (more of an ecchi manga).

Jump not having other fantasy/adventure manga besides Ichi is more of an exception among the weekly shounen magazines. Maybe you could count Kiyoshi? But if you do, you could also add a few others to the list like Kaijin Fugeki and Sleepy Princess.
There's one more non Ichi fantasy/adventure WSJ manga you've left out =P
