This was a really good Himaten chapter, one of the the best confession chapters in Jump romcoms. Especially having a bonus second confession right after. Honoka definitely needed more screen time, in the latter half of the series it was much more focused on Himari and Kanna with Honoka's character already being pretty set, but on its own this was a great chapter for sure. And a proper kiss too (that the girl went in for even), so many series shy away from having one at all or have it be a sillhouette or something so they don't have to actually draw lips touching.

On the note of comparing it to Nisekoi, I've always held that Nisekoi's 'filler' was the good part. That series absolutely sucked at drama and actual romantic developments with the fun part of it being the comedy and shenanigans. Himaten's much, much better at the actual character writing.

This week's Class 2B chapter was the first one I've actually enjoyed. Just one poopoo toilet line at the start with the rest finally showing Gintama's biggest strength - having characters rip into each other while increasingly losing control of an already ridiculous situation. More of this please, and less toilet humour or extremely basic boring isekai world building.

I still think Drawn to the Fire and Roku were better this week though, the models playing football got a genuine out loud laugh from me and I enjoyed Fire delving into not-friend's own view of their old days.

I was also really engaged with Hal Formula this week. The first chapter I thought was rather boring until it got to the race at the end, but this one really had my attention the full time. I'll be surprised if it does well with this premise, and the author struggling in Jump before, but if it does manage to find an audience with the weekly readers I'll be very happy.

i read Nisekoi weekly from the first to final chapter, that thing had barely any real development after chapter 50 when Chitoge realised her feelings
I read it weekly from the first chapter as well and I don't think it's much different from the average romcom in terms of pacing. It just did more comedy, I won't say I loved everything (honestly, could do without the pendant plot), but it certainly was doing a good job at building in a fun cast for situations. Often romances feel like they don't have enough characters to do anything and that wasn't the case for Nisekoi.

Nisekoi had isn't gonna fly anymore with current readers having experienced much better romance writing like Blue Box and series that actually goes for kissing instead of what was that "kiss" in the final chapter,
Blue Box drags way more in the second half with all the focus on the boring secondary characters, recycling Hina's issues and Taiki/Chinatsu have a more alien relationship than Raku and Chitoge even though they kiss.

Nisekoi was surely not really different from many other romcom that also barely develop the romance for most part, but the thing for me with Nisekoi compared to other series that also drags is that Nisekoi didn't have the drama/controversy stuff or some fanservice/spicy things to make it up for the big lack of proper development in good part of the series, so it was just comedy which many times for me it was kind of bland/tame humor too, sometimes it would work sometimes it would be simply like "Why he's publishing this..." lol

Yeah Blue Box also drags but at least things happen, we didn't have to wait 4/5 years like in Nisekoi just to see Raku going braindead and deciding he doesn't like the girl he loved since forever anymore, and still not even show a kiss :grin

Great Kiyoshi spread page, very nostalgic too! :neji :hinata

I was reminded of when they do this in Black Clover with Finral vs. his brother, it’s become a bit of an iconic/recognizable technique across series.

They even had a crossover cover to celebrate their OVA for the "Jump Super Anime Tour 2004" before their TV anime broadcast:

And this is like a predecessor to the Tsugimanga winner moment we had with Chihiro and Chihiro from Kagurabachi/Girl Meets Rock and the crossover arts they did. Nice.

Yeah, a 200+ chapters manga where 90% is filler without any actual romantic development only for in the end to make the mc suddenly reject that girl he loved since forever and decide he now loves the other girl because "yes", and ahh, not even show a final kiss!

Yay please Naoshi-san show us how to write a real romcom! :derp
he should be banned from making manga forever

Nah that's extreme lol

It might sound crazy today but Naoshi was once a really respected and promising writer that people couldn't wait to see what he was going to do after Double Arts, his one shots pre Nisekoi serialization were all hyped online and pretty unique, @Newkerzy knows that because he was in the Forums at the time, unfortunately something happened with Nisekoi and that version of him disappeared, now people only knows him from either Nisekoi or romcom one shots which is kinda sad because he really had potential for much more.

I remember him from back then and always thought his oneshots were nice in concept, but overhyped because they were hard to turn into interesting serializations, they were all kinda gimmicky. People also seem to have a huge bias for battle manga in fantasy worlds because they assume it's going to be a cool adventure, making up all kinds of imaginary scenarios and epic arcs in their minds, and most of the time it's just boring and flat, see Red Hood, Golem Hearts and Ginka & Gluna.

Also, romcoms aren't an inferior genre to battle manga. lol

WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP ISSUE #30 (2026) - AUTHOR COMMENTS!

Cannon Master (Reiya Machida)

I still can’t believe it, but I’ll work my butt off so you can enjoy my series!

Ichi the Witch (Osamu Nishi)

I had a doughnut party with my friends. I see, so this is a motchurin.

Sakamoto Days (Yuto Suzuki)

I want to ride Falcons Flight. I never thought they’d actually complete it.

Hal Formula (Kento Terasaka)

I bought my first racing wheel to aid with the manga. No accidents yet, but I’m having so much fun that it’s dangerous.

Class 2-B: Hero Destroyerz (Hideaki Sorachi)

My stomach is getting bigger and bigger. It’s really hard to find exercise time while doing a serialization.

Someone Hertz (Ei Yamano)

Lately I’ve been collecting polar bear butt pictures. They’re so cute. Just like a plushie.

Animal Signal (Taishi Tsutsui)

I beat the second installment of a game called Paranormasight! It’s helpful to my work and super fun!

Akane-banashi (Yuki Suenaga)

The Akane-banashi anime has gotten even more amazing as they’ve started the Karaku Cup! “Jugemu” was too awesome!

Roku’s House of Oddities (Atsushi Nakamura)

What will the results for the Japanese national team be in the World Cup by the time this comment is printed? I’ll be working and rooting at the same time!

Shinobi Undercover (Ippon Takegushi)

Summer vegetable curry often has kabocha in it, but aren’t you a winter vegetable?

Kagurabachi (Takeru Hokazono)

I’ll be taking a small break. Please wait patiently while I work on making Kagurabachi even better!

Witch Watch (Kenta Shinohara)

The push sumo tournament on the Knight Scoop show had everything you need in a shonen manga series.

Me & Roboco (Shuhei Miyazaki)

I ate squid. I have two left, so I’m excited. With butter and soy sauce is the best!

Blue Box (Kouji Miura)

For the last six months, I’ve read Kimi no Quiz, Ichijigen no Sashiki, Hakobune, and Butter before bed.

Nue’s Exorcist (Kota Kawae)

Lately I’ve been boiling tap water and then cooling it down in the refrigerator before drinking it.

Drawn to the Fire (Masayoshi Satosho)

Some turtledoves have built a nest in my yard. Their occasional singing makes me feel good.

Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi (Shoichi Usui)

I’m so hyped for the World Cup! I wonder what the situation will be by the time this comment is printed?

Hima-Ten! (Genki Ono)

I hope the rainy season ends soon. I want to go for a drive.

Kinato’s Magic (Kento Amemiya)

I love Daw90000 so much that I start staring if I see a large group of men and women walking in town. It’s probably not weird yet.

Under Doctor (Kyo Tanimoto)

I was blessed to have Horikoshi Sensei write a volume 1 bellyband recommendation for me! I’m so grateful!

The superiority of battle shonen must be studied. "You know, battle shonen has clash of swords, you know, and themes, you know. It has a lot of themes, you know. It is nothing like, you know, romcom, because, you know, battle shonen has battles, you know. Like who would think otherwise, you know?"
Imagine thinking battle shonens are superior to other genres by standard...

I don't even want to lean on the believable part since we are talking about fiction, not reality itself, but at leat I find it more believable and deeper than any battle shonen on the magazine right now.

This week Top 10 most tweeted Jump chapters!

HxH didn't even start and already reaching 2nd with Hima-Ten! being in 3rd with a LOT of mentions! Cannon Master did fine but i think the most impressive is Hal Formula actually getting more mentions in the 2nd chapter than the 1st! That's rare to happen:

They're the same at a surface level. lol A ton of battle manga are just power fantasy as well, it's all about execution and unique points by the author.

Monogatari is a harem story about a bunch of girls falling in love with a single guy, but it's way more interesting and has more depth than a battle manga like Mashle. No need to bring up Monogatari even, something like Highschool DxD is straight up better.

Of course the are. However premise of harem is MORE ridiculous since its about actual human relationships and thus more unbelievable.

Monogatari has a number of quirks. For one its also blatant parody of harem genre. You cant convince me Nisio wrote toothbrush scene seriously

I'm starting to kinda wish Class 2B gets axed just so Sorachi can shut up about struggling with serialization

He is obviously hinting that going back to work is a mistake
