Cannon Master:
- That setting sounds familiar. As in, I can think of at least four series that use the same concept and I don't even like fantasy.
- The guy is a hero in his own right, right? Why is he acting as if he's nothing without the kid?
- May I suggest less running and more etiquette classes? Because clearly there's still work there.
- Is the kid stupid? How much control do you need to hit a large target in an empty desert?
- Okay, I can see where he got his stupidy from. How is bluffing going to help in this situation? At least tell the kid and the villagers to evacuate.
- See? Just kick it. As long as you don't aim it towards the village, all's fine.
- The fight choreography kinda reminds me of Dragon Ball.
- No! Not the flute! That one might actually require control!
- A power beam battle (that's the cannon?) and a kid with alien powers. (S)He did read Dragon Ball.
- I'm not sure if the guy is noble or a total idiot. I'm also not sure how he's planning to explain the sudden third eye.
So yeah, there's a lot of borrowing going on here, but the core relationship is well-established. I'm just not sure if I like it yet. I do hope they won't stay in this tiny village for too long, because I'd much rather see more of the world.
And with that, this new batch was... kinda disappointing for me. I think it's the first time none of the new series made it in my top 3 with their first chapter. Cannon Master could still turn things around, Hal Formula MAYBE but not likely, and Animal Signal is probably a lost cause because it feels like it's meant for younger kids and it's probably going to stick with the gimmick without changing too much.
(I only just realised, but my main grief with all three series this week has to do with stupidity. In Cannon it's just the characters acting clumsy because they are out of their depth, so that's easy to fix with some character development. In Formula it's how they overexplain/repeat everything as if they think we're stupid, which is weird because Beast Children didn't have that problem. And for Animal it's how they overhype every little mystery as if someone decoded the Rosetta Stone, which makes the characters look stupid...)
Votes:
1) Shinobi: Not sure if that was the best way to bring it, but I'm glad they talked. Now they just need to convince Aoi to get engaged, which honestly sounds pretty doable if he can get his confession straight.
2) Kiyoshi: So the former youngest was just jealous? But he's seriously overstepping here... Once again, I question their vetting process. And of course Kiyoshi is just taking it head-on.
3) KGB: Nothing really new, but nice delivery. Though the cliffhanger tension is a bit diluted by, y'know, this being a flashback.
4) Ichi: HAHAHAHA! Guess Hate-y wasn't submissive after all, just annoyed. (And wow, the crazy witch agrees with me about Ichi being,
er, a tad overzealous with his stabby-stabby reflexes.) Doesn't make much sense to arrest the Bullet Witch but not everyone else though... Also, are they still fighting over Ichi? Because that'd be pretty stupid. (You are clearly fighting a majik-witch combo. Just work together.)
5) Akane: That went from funny to dark real fast.
Dr: That was fast. It's like the series is going out of its way to avoid the fighting parts and go straight to the personal stuff now. Not a bad chapter, though it is starting to feel a little repetitive.
Cannon Master
Nue: Fastest training arc ever. His dad
is was seriously underestimating him.
WW: For a magical judge, Gambit is kind of easy to fool, isn't he?
Fire: Not sure that flashback was really needed, but I'm glad they made up.
Roku: That's an... interesting interpretation of the world cup. Didn't work all that well for me though, and I wish we'd gotten just a little more information.
Himaten: Dude went straight for "Have my babies!", didn't he? Anyway, I'm glad for them. They have clearly liked each other for a long time. And the power imbalance in the other pairings was a bit too large for my taste.
Animal: "This guy knows what a molehill is! He's a genius! Nobody in this school specialised in animals could ever have figured that out! (What's Google?)"
~Top students from a school where the maximum IQ is 50, apparently.
Formula: The answer was clear the moment the question was asked. Spelling it out 8 times was at least 5 times too many. And I still don't like how the series is acting like it's a good thing to gamble your life and that of the people who depend on you.
Kubo does not need oda schedule when he is gonna repeat his old trick of giant panels devoid of backgrounds lol
This was one of the things he got mocked relentlessly for decades ago. Nowadays people see Bleach with big nostalgia lens. Forgetting each of his chapter was essentially a 30 seconds read devoid of subtance.
I am not a Bleach hater btw. I am just neutral of it. I am just saying how it was back when it was serialized. I can simply imagine all the modern braindead lobotomy crowd gonna start clowning it too (and maybe even harder than how it was) if it really gets serialized long term
I wasn't part of the fandom back then, but I do remember picking up a new volume of Bleach and finishing it in 15 minutes, so yeah. (For comparison, Detective Conan took me like 2 hours.)
I hope he's not going to do that again, or at least not as long (as in, don't spend multiple volumes on the same couple fights. I don't mind a few giant panels). Though, frankly, I can't see him doing a full weekly serialisation at all; I think either this'll be short 'seasons' like HxH, or he'll be on a break shedule like Oda. There's no way he wants to go back to the constant grind after all that time.
On the Himaten vs Nisekoi topic, I enjoyed both series a lot, but I do feel like the ending of Himaten is kind of lame. I know there will always be people rooting for the Onodera and Honoka type characters, but to me it’s kind of juvenile to be so focused on the childhood friend character just because she’s (usually) demure and kind and was there first. I think in the real world most people get over their oneitis for the first girl they had a crush on. Most people don’t ever act on middle school crushes. It’s usually the girl that comes later in a more formative time of your life that you fall for and end up with. You realize the feelings you have for that person are more significant and meaningful than the childhood crush that you just like because she was the cutest girl in your orbit when you started to like girls. I liked the ending of Nisekoi because it’s basically Raku coming to this realization. To me it seems childish to think that true romance is when you permanently crush on the one girl who made an impression on you as a kid instead of getting older and changing and forming more significant relationships. Just my two cents.
I also don’t agree with the common criticism that Nisekoi dragged on forever and there was no plot development. The comedy and the hijinks of the cast *was* the plot, not just filler. I don’t know what people wanted, Raku and Chitoge to just get together after the Romeo and Juliet arc? Everyone always wants the couple to get together in romance series, but I don’t really need 50 chapters of Raku and Chitoge doing all the same things but holding hands, you can just use your imagination. I thought the ending was honestly perfect. And I did enjoy Himaten but I think Nisekoi was way funnier and more entertaining and had a substantially better cast. It’s way better than Himaten. I look forward to if/when Naoshi returns!
And like someone else pointed out, there’s still at least one more chapter and Tenichi has to go see Himari. I don’t think a final swerve is completely impossible.
I agree that childhood crushes aren't everything, but in the case of Himaten, I don't think his basis with Himari is much stronger. He basically saw someone who couldn't take care of herself and his mothering reflexes kicked in. That's not love. It can grow into it, but we didn't really see that.
For fun, does anyone want here to make a very early prediction for which series that don’t have a volume out yet (so everything post-Kinato) will avoid the axe and get a full run? I have been sitting here for 10 minutes trying to make my own guess and now that I’m caught up on all of those options (been getting back into Jump a lot recently, yay), I’m not sure I can make an impartial prediction lmao. Someone bolder/less subjective will have to take a crack at it.
I'm not sure what you mean by full run, but I'd be surprised if any of them lasted longer than a year.
