Seeing all the complaints about Sakamoto, is there any shonen manga that does NOT get clowned during the final arc? This gotta be an inescapable curse.

I only remember KnY and Haikyuu's final arc being universally praised.

And it is crazy seeing its fans clowning Sakamoto heavily now, considering it was widely glazed to hell back then

Nearly finished catching up to the magazine again after being lazy for a bit and Sakamoto Days is killing me man."Sakamoto is gonna die oh but its actually Uzuki Sakamoto" nobody thinks he's going to die for even one second, and Nagumo and Gaku just spawned in to get their respective one hits in lol,Gaku was resurrected to hit Sakamoto one time smh.Besides that Roku and Ichi are still great and Kagurabachi is back yay. Still need to read all the newbies tho,I'm curious on how the magazine will look since quite a few series are petering
I’m starting to think the only reason this Sakamoto death tease was done was for the sole purpose of getting Uzuki to unlock a prime Sakamoto personality that has to be fought as a big finale. Which honestly, to me sounds pretty cool, with the themes of putting to death his former self by beating this Uzuki so he can go on living as just fat Sakamoto, even if he doesn’t overtly kill Uzuki in the process. The setup for it might be a bit awkward, but I think the idea of it has potential to be really cool. We’ll see how the rest of the fight plays out.

I feel like its just a symptom of the medium, manga is different from comics in that it is typically written as you go changing to avoid cancellation and fit reader expectation in real time.I feel like some mangaka go in with very low investment in their series, simple concept and expanding from there,so they don't do a bunch of world building and work for a series that gets U19'd.

So once they are out of the red so to say they now have a bunch of plotlines they've set up and can only tie so many up in a satisfactory way.also correct me if I'm wrong but they usually get a set amount of time to finish and need to stick to that schedule which is why some manga will get extra epilogue chapters that wrap things up better in the full volumes.tbh writing and drawing every week for years will also probably fry your brain a bit and I'm sure it can also be a "just get it done" situation, this problem is less common with monthly cuz you get more time to plan.People also don't like endings in general, at the time breaking bad's ending was hated I'm pretty sure and people love it now. Just my theorising tho I'm no expert

Personally I've enjoyed most of Sakamoto Days' final arc (aside from Sakamoto himself being out of commision for most of it), it's just the final fight that's a disappointment.

Otherwise among series I've followed ongoing I'd say there's also:

  • Toriko - the path leading up to the arc (ie skipping a bunch of smaller arcs) obviously wasn't too popular, but I remember the final arc itself being loved (well, in the west at least, it did not perform well in the ToC)
  • MHA anime - I remember the manga having a lot of complaints, but the anime's significantly better pacing resulted in it being much better received overall aside from a certain couple parts
  • Medaka Box - the fans pretty much all loved how it ended
  • Kuroko Basketball - if we're counting sports, this counts for sure
  • Assassination Classroom - the finale is probably the most loved part of the whole series
Then there's Hinomari Sumo, Yozakura Family, and Hinomaru Sumo which didn't get the typical final arc complaints but have much smaller fanbases and as a result didn't have the kind of fans who kick up a storm like that.

The whole thing about hating the final arc is mostly a western social media thing by manga readers, even casual fans often don't care. Just look at how anime viewers reacted to the anime endings of Attack on Titan and Hero Academia in comparison to the manga. It's always a vocal minority.

And before someone claims "oh, the japanese also complain", it's not similar at all in scale of annoying memes being spammed, of course there are people who like or dislike things everywhere, but most of the overly negative complainers seem to prefer doing it on forums. It's the same as above anyway, most casual fans don't get worked up over all the little things and generally enjoy the endings.

I'm not liking Sakamoto's final arc much because it's dragging as a weekly read, but it's also not something that gets me annoyed or ruins the whole manga.

Anime is a completely different medium than manga. It is absolutely unfair to compare reception of the two.

FYI, generally one episode anime adapts 3 to 4 chapters or manga. 3 to 4 chapters of manga equal to 4 to 5 weeks of waiting in between. Completely different experience

What I think causes it, more than anything else, is people who started with the anime, and prefer anime overall, transitioning to the manga so they can see the ending faster and not enjoying it as much. It's a completely different experience and every battle takes three times as many chapters as it does episodes (sometimes even more), which makes the wait a lot worse when you're suddenly experiencing it after only watching the anime for the majority of the series.

There are series that had significant issues in their final arcs for sure (Naruto's final battle was far too long and ended with a rather random 'oops, I think I made Madara too invincible' twist fight for example, and Jujutsu Kaisen's Culling games concluded basically every important fight badly), but you can easily see the difference in reception between people who stuck with MHA's anime to the end vs people who started with the anime then switched to the manga partway through.

You say ?
I read a lot of reviews about the ending of Kimetsu back then, and even today.

KnY’s last arc was definitely not, if you’re referring to Countdown to Sunrise. On the other hand, which I presume this is the one you’re referring to, Infinity Castle was universally praised indeed.

Yuuna started alongside Yaiba and also got a color page on ch7 so that was likely to be a "batch thing", it also took a while for Yaiba to actually rank well so the beginning was just not that well received, the magazine being stacked or not is irrelevant for new series first ranking, Hinomaru Zumou started in 2014 when it was even more stacked and ranked 1st place:

Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #33 (2014)
00. Mitsukubi Condor (New Series by Ryo Ishiyama, Cover & Lead Color Pages)
01. Hinomaru Zumo
00. Assassination Classroom (Color Page)
02. Saiki Kusuo no Sainan
03. Naruto
04. Isobe Isobee Monogatari
00. My Hero Academia (Color Page)
05. Nisekoi
06. Haikyu!!
00. Shokugeki no Souma (Color Page)
07. Toriko
08. Kuroko no Basket
09. Gintama
10. Kochikame
11. World Trigger
12. Hunter x Hunter
13. Illegal Rare
00. Sore Ike! Yugo-kun (One Shot)
14. Bleach
15. Stealth Symphony
Illegal Rare my beloved.
I have such fond memories of this era of Jump. It was when I started being super active here for the first time.

Well.... i'm glad you're doing fine right now and just in time for Roku cover & lead color page! :beer

Also did you see my post about U19 author returning?
Roku deserves it. So good.
Also been really loving Cannon Master.

And yes! Super excited. Always thought Kimura had mad potential.

Take care, friend. You're always very friendly and nice to have a conversation with, feels like we have similar tastes and experiences with manga. Glad to see you're enjoying the new series, I agree with both Roku and Cannon Master being decent reads.

Speaking of canon master: is the sidekick being seen as really insufferable to many?

If so, what scenario is likely to make more fans of the series? To me, I think the death of the sidekick is way too harsh, maybe having him stay put and have the mentor teach several apprentices from others.

Insufferable is a bit too much, but there's nothing to do, the kid is here and is a "vital" part of the series future, Machida made his bed, hopefully the other qualities people praise about it are enough.
