Regarding rule #9, an exception will be made for when we have new series, in this case, spoilers will be allowed only for the first 3 chapters of a new series for the users who are interested in knowing informations and details about the new series, these spoilers will obviously be kept under tags to protect anyone that doesn't want to be spoiled, so don't worry about it.

It's funny, the magazine now has 8 series I'm really looking forward to each week and 9 series I don't care for at all, with only 3 in-betweens. I don't think that's ever happened before.

1) Kiyoshi: So we're having another Nue situation. Wasn't she stuck on the mountain though?
Aw, I wanted to see the festivals! But I guess a murder investigation is fun too.

2) Shinobi: Great, another weirdo. But it seems like the enemy has underestimated the number of pieces in this game.
Quite the unique colour page this time around.

3) Cannon: Bold, snatching the prey out of its mouth like that. The minister is a true professional. But frankly, the rest of the troupe wasn't doing its job. They should have protected the civilians. Leaving it up to the guy who's also doing the rescuing is ridiculous.

4) Roku: Touching. But with a lot of creepy undertones as well.

5) Dr: They look so cool in the colour page! Too bad the old guy doesn't have more of a role in the chapter itself. And it seems like this arc is already over. I wish we'd seen them work together a bit more instead of Mr Sceptic suddenly changing his whole tune.

KGB: Shiba was a hero all along, eh? I can't really blame the Masumi for doing their job, but reopening his wounds was brutal. I wonder if they'll go easier on the living treasure.

Ichi: I was gonna complain about the bike banter going on too long, but it's actually impressive they managed to fit that much information and mood in just one page. And they sure as hell didn't waste any time getting in. Now that tiny thing is gonna be either incredibly weak or incredibly strong, there's no in between.

Drawn: I'm not sure what happened there, but I loved four-eyes scoring and then being surprised about it.

WW: I didn't realise the police was in on this. They shouldn't have told him. But, er... is there a reason they can't just let him revive his girlfriend? She wasn't actually evil, right? Oh wait, is it because they need a body?

Akane: Lore! But we still only get to see glimpses of it.

Nue: Feels very Bleach.

Kinato: Apparently there's two references to Sakamoto in here. I wouldn't have noticed them if they hadn't been pointed out to me, but once you see them it's very obvious.

14. Cannon Master: The series is still good but this specific chapter didn't convey that many emotions. The minister is still shady, for example how does he know that Bharat is a wind elemental?

Because he's flying?
I feel like earth elementals aren't usually soaring through the sky like that.

I'm more curious how he knew the demon was a wind user. Then again, he's apparently the country's top expert, so he might just be able to tell from its movements.

The Kawaguchi one-shot has been translated

The boy reminds me of the merchant from Otr, which isn't a bad thing because he was the only character I liked. This version could stand to be a little bolder (and less obsessed with youth). The girl - or rather her role - is a bit generic, but she has a beautiful smile and she's already more lively than most of the MCs before her, so I'll take it.

I'm not sure if it would work to turn this into a series though. If they do, it's probably best not to start with the last mystery. Also, you're gonna need mysteries that aren't exactly what it says on the tin.

(Btw, what's with all the series about 7 mysteries all of a sudden? Does it have something to do with the time of the year?)

Issue 36 Thoughts/Ranking:

1: Akane-banashi - Agh, I could drown myself in these interactions between Akane and Kaisei. Her warding off the demon of death when he was still talking dourly, showing how much she cares, and him willing to put up with her fussing despite him having taken the loss, and them still competing with joy on their faces. So wholesome together, dare I say even cute, and- oh right the plot. Well… we sure did get baited with the explanation, but I’m hoping that’s only for the purpose of revealing it at the appropriate time during this arc; so I will wait until we’re through with this arc to mald about how we didn’t get the deets. Zensho being the third disciple of Shiguma V is an interesting setup leading into how I imagine he is a broken man in his own way compared to Issho and Shiguma. I’ll be curious to see how his performance begets the tragedy of how he came to be this way.

2: Kagurabachi - Urita’s value as a duplicable fighter really makes me wonder how his style changes upon picking up his enchanted blade. I like how much the actual smelting matters here, and am intrigued by how Kunishige’s dad had a different “blacksmith name”, but Chihiro just inherited his father’s. I feel like I’ve seen this same sword guard that resembles a more basic Enten like 15 times now, wonder if that’s just a standard guard design or what. Also fascinated by the Masumi being here; guess they did not exist as a byproduct of Samura, and Sumi is actually the oldest member current-day? (assuming this is actually her, I haven’t not checked Sumi’s age (Update: Sumi would’ve been around 3-4 years old during all this. That is not Sumi).)

3: Roku’s House of Oddities - Yeah, I was both expecting and hoping for this angle in terms of subverting hard battle with the helping spirits route. Very good chapter to have the cover since it’s really setting the tone for the series.

4: Hal Formula - Really good framing of the main character and current rival’s starkly opposing styles. Wild aggressive kid who’s gung-ho versus the cold and calculated one… it’s pretty much a textbook shonen dynamic, just in a rather unfamiliar setting for the archetype. I’ll be curious to see how the feel of the track changes once they all field together.

5: Sakamoto Days - Like I said last time, it’s just a cool way to stage a final fight. I wonder if this will end up like a really fast Sukuna moment where he manages to clobber them all and Sakamoto finds a way to get up to beat himself up at the end.

6: Witch Watch - I honestly hadn’t considered the degree to which the home team was keeping a pulse on things. They were celebrating WAY too early too, should’ve known Shikimi might have something up his sleeve (well, literally in this case, given that he has the bone in his arm now, haha). Y’know, this all makes me wonder if the former villain guy from the previous big arc where Nico turned young will be back in action for this final part, or if we’re still just gonna focus on the main crew here.

7: Nue’s Exorcist - That was a lot to take in all at once, but the girls getting absolutely pasted is a big statement here regarding how far Shitotsu has come. I think it’s neat watching Gakuro take on this support role for the battle, and I especially enjoy seeing Shitotsu going wild, though I feel like the series does not hold your hand when it comes to keeping track of how people’s abilities level up and what that means, because I’m a little stuck asking questions like “how does the armored form with the dozens of swords play off of the previous abilities she had?” Nuebros pull that info up for me if you can please and thank you. I’m starting to get the feeling now that we’ve seen Shitotsu’s bag that Gakuro will have to level up to get them through this fight.

8: Cannon Master - Alright, we have some more sapient enemies we’re facing. I will say despite the circumstances a small part of me still feels like the minister might be a bad guy? Not to judge by his looks, but he still doesn’t feel 100% in the clear. We have a more immediate enemy to talk to, though, so let’s let that unfold first before we make any other determinations.

9: Someone Hertz - This feels very conveniently timed right after the Kawaguchi one-shot about seven wonders, haha. Also was very humored by a lot of them just being Mizuo in her prime gremlin form.

10: Animal Signal - I’m here for this goofy form of powerscaling where Tsubasa overcomes things not just with logic, but with his adoration for animals. Nice to see other co-worker pairs too.

The Rest (Some good, some okay):

Shinobi Undercover - LOVE the color page, although minus points because unless someone has a 6-string bass I do not see a bassist up there, just 3 guitars… Anyways, this was… a surprisingly fun and quick way to move a lot of pieces forward in this sudden battle twist to the arc. I wonder how much fighting it’ll actually take to work through this event and if they’ll be able to keep up the guise completely, or if at least one person will catch on to the ninja, whoever it may be.

Under Doctor - I appreciate that they make the point to say that Samejima made a reasonable call, because no real life scenario involves someone like Haiji being on the scene to detect problems and work at double speed. Seems like this “long day” has pretty much wrapped up already though; I wonder if the toll of this day will carry into next chapter with Haiji’s mood/energy.

Kinato’s Magic - To be frank, the big amount of exposition here (especially when no one was asking for all that) is screaming axed (not that such wasn’t inevitable already). I did enjoy how much Linae stepped up to bat this chapter though, almost to the point that Kinato felt like a side character in this whole exchange.

Ichi the Witch - I look forward to seeing what Boxter and Amadoro can add to our whimsical cast; though, our crew is rather big right now, so hopefully we will not see people getting neglected too much. Kumugi seems like she’s probably gonna be getting her own share of attention this arc, so let’s see what we can do!

Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi - Interesting angle to set off with for the new arc, I totally forgot about there being a mole but I’ll be curious to see what interactions this academy setting will induce for Kiyoshi given that he’s not a student there and outranks all of the students that are there.

Drawn to the Fire - A reasonable way to work around the problem that is the enemy, but will this be enough to turn the tides completely? I imagine he’ll have to keep finding new ways to feint his moves so it becomes less readable.

Me & Roboco - A fun and whimsical concept, if a bit choreographed for a lot of them. Some were more entertaining than others. I hope Gaku is able to amend his ability to converse with his wife.

Class 2B - A bit of a blasé chapter, but not wholly uninteresting with the school hierarchy. I don’t know if it was a good idea to not have Valaris present at all this chapter, since she is a big driving force of the comedy.

The Witch of Thousands (Nico) is needed for the ritual, and I believe it’s said or implied that Rosewitha would resurrect through that body, implying Nico would either die or be a permanently suppressed conscious inside of her own body.

You are right that she wasn’t evil, and more than that, it seems she wasn’t even really powerful; she just was a witch that this guy became a final boss to revive. It’s kinda funny cuz I really do think if he succeeded and instituted a world controlled by warlocks in the process, she would starkly disapprove, which would be quite in contrast to whatever all the other warlock lackeys of his would expect.

great issue! roku has charmed me beyond words and this is great because it looks like witch watch is closer to the end than I'd have thought.... was hoping shinohara gets some more time in but alas

kiyoshi has the funniest chance to extend the series right now too....
under doctor and 2b both had fantastic chapters too, they're really earning their spots for me
hal is losing me a bit, I hope it kicks things up into higher gear (lol) soon and I'm dying to see dttf and kinato go

sakamoto has kinda hooked me back, but in a more junk food-y way where this is hype as hell but realistically should've happened a lot earlier. either way still fun and honestly might as well be fun on the way out

Here we have confirmation that Kawae made the backgrounds more white during fights simply to better the readability. And to be honest, I understand the decision.

Also, he likes to use a lot of panels to show different framings of the battle.

In the example he used, chapter 144, he shows one clean page of Gakuro's thrust, following it up with both Kasha's reaction and Gakuro's emotions right after

Minya Hiraga (Neru's author) said in his latest fanbox post that he'll post less frequently because "There have been quite a few developments in my personal work, and I'm surprised by some of them, as they've all happened in ways I hadn't anticipated. Next month is shaping up to be incredibly busy, so I'm feeling very motivated."

Possible return? Maybe a move to a different magazine?
