Sakamoto had the chance to be JJK level international hit but the anime botched it. The anime is not bad but the level of detail and kinetic action needed for the choreography (the series’ strongest attribute) and animation was made to just a standard level when it should’ve excelled. If it did excel, we’d see a lot of western discussion and popularity. I’m wondering if SD is the reason why Nue’s is so delayed; maybe Jump knows that with the level of detailed artwork mixed with good animation could make it a mega hit and they don’t want to mess that up.
The anime has nothing to do with it.

It could have been made by Mappa, but it would have sold the same amount.

It simply didn't have the right characteristics to be mainstream in the West.

What do you think is the right characteristics to be mainstream in the West?

Saying Sakamoto Days doesn't have the right characteristics to be mainstream in the "action obsessed" west is crazy, specially when the manga is literally one of the most read on Manga Plus :XD

In the era of Tiktok, a well animated Sakamoto Days would be huge. If you got just one or two clips of crazy fights spreading on Tiktok, it'd become their new favourite.

Animation doesn't guarantee success. We saw Tokyo Revengers achieve great success, even with weak animation. If you're not careful, Tokyo Revengers might have been more successful than Fire Force. There's no way to know if Sakamoto would have been more successful with better animation; honestly, I think Sakamoto would have been just as successful regardless of the animation.

That's why the magazine should invest in all types of publication. Maybe an anime of Roku will be really successful and Kagurabachi may have an okayish boost.

Tokyo Revengers was never known for great art or great fight coreography, so having great animation was never a selling point, it was all about the drama & characters interactions which is why a very good portion of the huge success was the fujoshi crowd being heavily into it.

Sakamoto Days in other hand is all about the art and impressive fight coreography which always had people wishing for great animation to match with the manga.

Simply bringing comedy isn't investing in all types of audiences. You say that an anime by Roku is very successful and Kagurabachi gets a reasonable boost, but that didn't happen with Witch Watch and Sakamoto Days, for example.

The two things have nothing to do with each other; if it were that simple, Undead Unluck would have had more visibility than Frieren.

Undead Unluck had other problems regarding its anime. Comparing the two is just unreasonable. Frieren is a different kind of battle shonen than Undead Unluck.

This doesn't change anything. Even Jujutsu Kaisen has had production problems.

I mean, World Trigger's initial adaptation was incredibly low budget, often makes the Sakamoto Days anime look hella sakuga. yet it managed to become a success both in Japan and the west. It'd probably be even more popular in the west if it wasn't for the hiatus and subsequent move from weekly.

It's not that a show specifically needs strong animation to do well, but series like World Trigger have interesting worlds, some unique concepts, a lot of the action is more strategy based, these are things that can be conveyed even with bland animation. If you can grab viewers by these other aspects, that's fine.

But Sakamoto Days' whole thing is action, the main draw was always Suzuki's art and how he storyboards action, story wise it's pretty flat, so the anime's action animation, story boarding and direction all being actually bad hurt it a lot. And I don't think it's average like people say, it's below that line for current anime because of how bland the direction is. Sakamoto vs Boiled is completely uninspired and slow in the anime and that's supposed to be one of the key moments to bring new fans.

There are better choreographed and animated fights in a year long production like Digimon Beatbreak than in the Sakamoto Days anime, I doubt many newbies will be impressed when there are dozens of shows every season that look better or are at least in the same range. Only reason backlog grew was because the anime had a massive marketing campaign alongside it.

I mean, I mostly agree, but things like the invasion arc in World Trigger are pretty high-action and felt very underwhelming in the anime compared to the manga.
You're right though that Sakamoto Days whole point is the action. Where the style is the substance, so it's a bit more egregious for it to have such subpar animation and choreography direction.

Bleach is a fair comparison though. While I hear TTYBW adaptation is a lot better, the original anime a lot of people felt had very subpar animation and choreography than the manga. Which felt bizarre given Kubo's panelwork can be so cinematic, with very striking imagery, yet the anime more often than not went for its own thing that felt a lot blander.
That became enormous in the west.

There's also Seven Deadly Sins from WSM, which while the animation itself wasn't so much the issue, the pacing and direction of the anime was just butchered in the first season, yet it still managed to become a pillar of the mag and is popular in both Japan and the west.

Basically like, it's a shame when a series that requires good production values to properly be adapted gets shafted, but for those who haven't read the manga, they sometimes won't realize what they're missing, and thus they aren't as affected by it as manga readers would be.

These released long ago enough the standard for animation in shonen anime was low enough for them to be considered alright, but even then Seven Deadly Sins second half had a ton of criticism because of the low production quality.

I'll say these have more substance than Sakamoto Days for the story as well. Bleach was a long running show, so the beginning part was over quickly and you already had a high stakes arc with the Soul Society. Sakamoto Days did 12 episodes that were basically just the intro, stopped midway through the Death Row Prisoners arc and stopped for months.

Seven Deadly Sins starts already with the story in motion. The viewer gets intrigued by who Meliodas is, the premise of finding the Seven Deadly Sins, what happened to the kingdom, etc. Sakamoto Days you could even say the stuff that happens in the first cour of the anime was basically soft rebooted in the manga as he dropped the comedy for a serious assassin story.

Yea, I do mostly agree with your points.
But yikes, I forgot how old SDS is now.
I keep forgetting the manga started when I was a senior in high school. It doesn't feel that old to me for some reason lol.
Edit: Actually it came out several months after I graduated, weird. I for some reason have memories of rec'ing it a high school friend during class back in the day, but ig not.
